You keep comparing yourself to a fictional group of players. Lacrosse in the Sacramento area, other than one team who had to travel over 75 miles for every one of the their games, is only in their second year. Unless you played against 4th graders, no one has picked up a stick for their whole sports career.

Coaches and parents implied otherwise. When working the scoreboard I was talking to a team mom who said her son's team had been playing for four years. Last yr when we went the teams said to have been playing 2-4 yrs, which would make it 3-5 this yr for the majority. So, we've gone with what we were told, true or not.

This is good news in many strategic ways, but bad news logistically.
If OP goes CIF, so too will Westlake, Agoura, TO, and NP in short order. That leaves SB and Calabasas in a two team league.
The CIF prohibits Sunday Games, so now SCLA games have to compete for refs with other CIF teams on Saturday. SCLA used to get the pick of the litter because they played multiple games at one site on non-CIF days and paid a fair fee per game. Now they're going to be obliged to compete for assignments with teams that are closer to the refs without the off-day, fair-pay, multi-game advantage. Unless they can get CIF to let them play multiple games, they're going to see one football official who read the rule book in the parking lot before the game.
This problem can be solved, but it will take planning and awareness to get it done before it's water under the bridge.

SS-CIF had the problem that half of the good refs quit when CIF cut our pay in half and they were replaced with first year guys who get a game or two of training, rather than the 10 seasons of playing followed by 15 seasons of post collegiate club play followed by 20 games worked as an apprentice to top tier officials before getting management of a game like we do in the Condor/SCLA realm. Some SS-CIF refs have playing experience, but many don't these days.

You make a good point 3pp, but I think that something else might happen. Assuming OP and Aguora went CIF by next season, I still dont think you'd see a CIF NP or TO for a while. Before then, Ive got reason to believe that a camarillo team could very well spring up. And once the lax action jumps the grade, I have no doubt that oxnard will follow within a year, maybe 2. The interaction between Camarillo kids and Oxnard kids is too high for a Cam team to go up and not an oxnard team.
So then we end up with SB, TO, NP, Cam, Oxnard, and Calabasas. Thats not too bad a league if you ask me, but then again, thats all speculation based on school board decisions and whatnot.
The key to the conejo going would bhe a strong season out of TO next year. Since Westlake, TO, and Newbury are all in the same school district, if one goes they all go. TO being the biggest of the three schools, their role is crucial. Westlake will have a strong support for the CIF cause, regardless of how their season goes next year. Newbury gets overlooked in a lot of school board decisions, especially regarding athletics(need I bring up the Dos Viento/stadium issue?), even if we do have a great season next year.

You know I was at a meeting of minds about 3 weeks ago to discuss the CIF officiating snafu we now find ourselves in. Very interesting stuff but hopefully we can somehow unite and get some solid methods for coordination and recruiting officials. If any of you are High School seniors (now incoming college freshman) and want to ref you should get in touch. Especially if you're going to be in LA, but really anywhere. Reffing is pretty fun, you get to see the game in a new way, AND you get a little walking around money if you're nice to the book keepers.
Plus you get to wear really snazzy socks.

Well you could go to http://www.uslacrosse.org/official/index.phtml
or you can shoot me a PM and we can figure it out. I really don't know if there is an age requirement for officiating, i'll have to find out. If you've graduated high school and you live in LA you'll be doing varsity games right out of the gate. Once you've been trained, certified, and paid your US Lacrosse dues of course. In places where there are more officials there is rumored to be a more of an introductory phase but our method is way more fun.

From Josh Eby, regarding CIF status:
The push for CIF status is being felt at the district and league level. It is and issue that has been discussed amongst the three district high schools and at our league meetings. In the end, the decision to have a sport is made league wide. A few of the issues/questions that have come up are facilities, finding quality coaches, possibility dropping a sport in order to add Lacrosse, and Title 9, if we do not have a girl’s team.
Bad news if you ask me. Within the marmonte league, only 4 of 7 schools have teams. So it looks that unless we see a surge in teams from Simi and Moorpark, nothing's going to happen soon. Not to mention the title 9 thing is huge. However, as the rumor mill has it(the rumor mill being my 3rd period classmate), a girls club team could be started in NP next year.
This also presents a problem to Santa Barbara. If Simi Valley and Moorpark added teams, and the decision is made to go CIF, that leaves SB without a league. Any thoughts?
cali feeder
06-09-2007, 01:43 AM

westlakelax17
06-09-2007, 12:01 PM
uh guys... i don't think there is a Title IX issue in high school [I think only in NCAA]. The real issue is that will the new program last if they allow it. 3PP i think said this before, if the school district would allow a lacrosse program to go CIF, they want to be sure that the funding for the program by the booster clubs is going to last, because if it doesn't or it goes down, then the school district will have to pay more money to keep it alive, and they don't want to do that.
We had our team party last night, and the board members that were leaving, kept on emphasizing that we really need to get on the ball for the push for CIF. Malibu and Oak Park both had to raise 60,000 dollars to go CIF. I think it will take a lot of determination for the rest of SCLA to go, but i think we can. The even hard part about this is that TO, NP, and westlake I think all have to raise the 60k separately, before we can go, since we are all in the same school district.
Last thing, Mr.Bright the SCLA president said that the CVLL is joining our league next year, and we will have approx. 1200 kids in the league. What is the CVLL anyways??
3rdPersonPlural

Mistakes can be made, too. How the fields and refs are scheduled will be important. There are NOT enough refs in the Conejo area to ensure ample refs for lots of games in different locations at the same time. If the powers that be don't recognize this, they'll be unhappy. Someone should contact our assigner (they know who he is) and agree on a plan.

I was trolling this thread and noticed this comment. I don't know what it was regarding but it made me think this may be related. The problem with starz and summer league is that there is absolutely no communication between the leagues, the refs, and the players, and the regular season organizing elements with regards to organization or availability. Between Starz and Adrenaline and U-x Leagues like LALL you have a competition for refs, field space, and even players. Factor in to this that leagues fail to contact local assigners for officials and you often see refs traveling over 2 hours to go to games way out of their regular zone because those are the people that have a relationship with the program in some way. Not only does this make it difficult to find a suitable amount of officials but it also screws over local guys (like myself) who want to stay involved over the summer but get cut out because of the old boys club factor. Summer league helps officials become better too. I went to a starz game 10 mins from my house and both of the officials were from SB, including one official in particular who had a less than stellar reputation last season.
We're trying to build more structure between the programs to allow for better communication from all sides so we can streamline our programs and make them most effective. Through better and more easily accessible leaders and point people we'll move towards a more synergistic approach to post season play and overall regional consistency. Also there is a very real shortage of Officials in the LA area. At one point last year we were down to 20. If you're in college and interested in officiating or if you're in HS and want to do younger kids (MS) let me know and I can put you in touch with the right people.
I think it should be a priority in this region to bring established teams in to the CIF system so we can have a real final and ranking system and bring more respect to west coast lacrosse.

Cali, don't fret too much, the only good SS teams other than Foothill and El Toro are: Palos Verdes, Corona Del Mar, St. Margarets, Jserra and I heard Loyola Los Angeles was pretty legit too. I know your teams skill a bit and those are really the only teams that could really have a chance to stand in your way. I'm not saying there aren't other teams that are good I just know for a fact about the teams I've stated.

Westlake has all the money. Other than one corp donor, most came out of the pockets of the board and the parents of the players. The corp donor was from the workplace of one of our players so no real outside business support.
I do not think Woodbridge should be higher than El Toro. El Toro was more than just the sum of their players, they have some pretty good coaching and very good conditioning. Part of their success was how strong, fast and conditioned they are/were.
Look at the bright side. With all three goalies from last season's all league gone, you, Kevin and DJ will lock up next years spots.

Conejo is right. El Toro had more than just talent. As he said, they were very conditioned, well coached, and quite disciplined, I might add. Thats not to say that they didn't graduate some studs, but they'll still be alright. I would not put Woodbridge ahead of them (who also graduated a couple good seniors).
I'll definitely still be attending SCLA games and following the league. It should be a lot closer this year, I think it'll be a total dogfight in the play offs.

No, because sense we have 3 schools, we cant. Also, what team is this? Funny thing about the CIF thing is that i think the only school that is actually going to do well in the CIF program is going to be GB, other than that, i don't think FH, OR, and (there were 2 other schools that went CIF in our district, don't remember though) are going to make it.

Why would you hate De LaSalle? Maybe you hate getting beaten by them but they have the most class of any team you might face.
Last weekend DLS's JV squad took Monta Vista's Varsity to 3 overtimes and 7 bravehearts before they lost a coin flip to decide it. Granted, Westfall wasn't in the net, but he was on the field knocing the sophmores on thier butts. Not one of the DLS players were talk'n trash while Monte Vista showed significantly less class by playing dirty and taking many penalties against physically smaller JV players.
De LaSalle runs a classy program. I have heard complaints about running up scores but how can you ask a 4th string midfielder not to take open shots when they maybe get 7-10 minutes all season.
Don't be so quick to hate, there are better targets out there than the class act Coach O'Meara puts on the field.

Indoor Lacrosse is coming to Simi Valley. At Iceoplex Ice Rink, they are supposedly redoing their ice and installing turf under the ice and putting soccer and lacrosse lines in. I heard this from one of the people at Point Break Lacrosse store [also known as Lax Store] because he plays hockey at that rink. jeff miller, who is apart of Thousand Oaks High school lacrosse team, is the one who set this up. Maybe that was the place that is doing the lacrosse lines. I just assumed that it was the Icoplex because the guy at Point Break [Laxstore.com] told me an ice rink in Simi, and that is the only one I know of. Sean Lindsey was talking about a box league at the Rollerdome over the summer, so he probably had influence there.

Eastlake High School, #42 Last Year, Middie, We've won Metro for 3 years in a row but its a pretty weak league. Our team probably isnt going to do too well this year, we lost 15 seniors all 10 starters and we have about 6 juniors and seniors all together with the rest freshmens and sophomores who have never played lacrosse before. Im practicing really hard for our team I go to the gym everyday at 3 AM - 6 AM ( Run 1 Mile, Lift weights, swim 1/2 mile ) with my parents then get ready for school, once im home i go practice at a wall for about 1.5 hours. I have a maverik wonder boy shaft with a brine answer head

Yeah, you guys did awesome last year i didnt know you guys lost to RB n the playoffs though. Your team beat my team, Eastlake High, I was barely getting into Lacrosse then. If we play again this year im sure well get dominated though. We've lost all the starters except one or something like that and 15 seniors

What does everyone think of the Westside lax pre season rankings??
http://www.westsidelax.com/
I think for the most part they're pretty accurate. I'm a little disappointed though, because the website made no effort to contact my school (Northwood High, in CIF-SS Seaview), and I believe they simply asked another coach in our area how he thought we would do.
On another note, though, I am definitely not looking forward to the Foothill or El Toro games (both are in our league).

Hello CIF teams. Oak Park is new to CIF this year and we do not have enough games for this upcoming season. Our AD only scheduled 2 games outside the two small leagues in our playing area. We have only 2 games with teams in the Top 20 and one is scheduled 3 hours away, one hour after SAT's let out. We have up to 8-9 open game slots. If your team is CIF and you need more games, give our AD a call. Let me know how the conversation goes. Oak Park High School CIF SS.

Anybody gotten any updates on the simi/rollerdome box league situation? Rollerdome seems like a more likely candidate for a league, seems like it would be easier to put down turf there than in an ice rink.

El Toro won't be that scary this year. They graduated that killer class of 16 seniors. I ref'd a couple of their JV games, the are not as good as before. The main advantage El Toro has is that all their freshmen know the basics, so the coach can work on many other things.

Some early returns out west, 2008:
2/22 - San Ramon Valley [#10 in 2007] 11, Redwood [#11 in 2007] 9
I watched the second half of the San Ramon, Redwood game. A really good early season Northern California matchup. San Ramon won the second half 8-5. San Ramon has an attackman, Cameron Girioux - and a mid-fielder, Kai Cummings who are DI material IMO. I believe they also made a real improvement in goal over last year.
I should be at the San Ramon v St. Ignatious game on 2/29.

my team, granite hills high school, just lost to poway high school last night in a scrimage. it wasnt much of a bad game, our offense is still having trouble focusing and getting stuff down but since it was a scrimage, it was all about playing time, so we tried to get new kids in to get them used to the caliber of play.
but our defense is AMAZING. probably the best defensive units we've ever had.
