I was wondering for HS try-outs, do you try out specifically for JV or varsity? Or do you try out and they tell you what team you made?

Also, if you make the varsity team when you want to play JV, is it possible to play JV anyways?

This is how my school works and i think its how most do as well....you are trying out for JV to start, and if they think you are that good, or they have a lot of guys on JV and are short on varsity, then they might move you up. And to answer your other question, its not mandatory to get moved up if you are asked to, you would just have to speak to the coach in private and tell him how you feel. But why wouldnt u want to? You probably wont start on varsity in your freshman year, but u have a good chance of getting playing time in 10th, and you will probably start in junior year, and definetely in senior year. If your playing with varsity guys all four years in high school, you have an advantage over the players who didn't. You would be dominating by senior year....but if you still feel that way, yes you can tell the coach you dont want to be moved up.

My highschool did this, but it ended up messing up a lot of kids. There is a group of kids in my brother's grade (who were sophomores last year) who all knew they were going to make JV. Some of them still tried out for Varsity just for the heck of it. The others (including my brother) tried out for JV. They all end up on JV. First practice, coach simply assigns all the players who tried out for Varsity as starters, assuming they were better.

Where I'm from, the better underclassmen will practice with Varsity and play for JV. However, some of my brother's friends who actually did make Varsity ended up not getting any playing time and wishing to play JV. They brought up their concern about field time with the coach and he promised them more field time. Unfortunately they never got it. The coaches at my school aren't too great from what I hear.

You should try talking to the high school coaches, because they're going to know how they run their tryouts and program better than any of us.

LB, you will have open tryouts, some kids will make varsity, some will make JV.
have you talked to the boosters about fall lax?

some kids do choose to play JV over sitting on the varsity bench. you need to decide whats best for you.

At our school we have open try outs where everyone trys out for both teams pretty much, and at the end they tell you where you fall. The one exception is that all freshman make JV at first, then after the varsity coaches see you they may move you up if they like you. Also I dont know if what it is because ive heard its school rules and ive heard its MSHAA rules, but all seniors automatically make varsity. If they are no good, they dont play however. Also if you make varsity and you feel you would rather play JV you are definately allowed to do that, you just need to talk to either the JV or Varsity coach about the switch.

Laxboy, in MoCo, fall ball is run through potomac lacrosse. I dunno much about NoVa, but fallball might be run through advantage lacrosse, or a similar league.

at our school we don't have tryouts. Anyone that wants to play can and the first week of practice we all practice together. Then the head coach splits it up into JV and Varsity. No freshmen team for us
