junior varsity is usually made up of freshmen and sophomores. (or just really bad juniors and seniors, but my school only has freshmen and sophomores).

varsity is made up of the upper classmen (or really good freshmen and sophomores).

most schools just have two teams in this fashion. some have a freshmen team, which is made up of only freshmen. or a frosh/soph team, jv, varsity.

most schools either have two or three teams broken up like this.

we have a developmental team which is freshman, and sophmores that have never played before. junior varsity is usually sophmores and freshman and a few juniors who have never played before. and varsity is juniors, seniors and good sophmores and freshman.

in MO we dont have enough to fill a jv so we have 8th graders play up and on the jv team. and we arent aloud to have seniors on jv no matter how good or bad they are

i thought there were JV and varsity teams all over the country in every school. i thought wrong i guess :dummy:

anyways, juniors and seniors can choose to stay down on JV rather than going up to varsity, people will think you suck, but it doesn't matter if you're doing it for self im provement or trying to help out the younguns....
that's what i did last season-----^

plus its more fun and get more playing time usually and you're almost always a captain so you get to boss the little kids around lol

He said he was from canada, so that explains his lack of knowledge in how the U.S. high school sporting structure is setup.

Secondly, a lot of leagues and state rules do not permit seniors to be on JV and they must play on Varsity regardless of skill level. Typically has to do with liability of having an 18yr old senior goon clean the clock of a freshman who's never played, can someone say injury?

In more developed areas, there's usually a freshmen (grade 9) team for only freshman. JV is for all grades besides seniors (grade 9 - grade 11). Varsity is for the best players, regardless of grade, freshmen through seniors. Typically freshmen aren't on varsity unless they're very good, same with sophomores. Hope this clears things up for the OP.

At my school we have a JV2(freshman team) with all the frosh who havent played before, then there is JV which is for freshman, sophomores, and juniors. then there is Varsity which is for the best people. At my school you can be on varsity as a freshman if your really good, so age dosent matter aslong as you can play.

i forgot to take into account that he was from canada, but thanks for pointing that out for me, i feel a bit retarded now lol. and i can understand the whole senior not allowed on JV because of the ruthless beatings that will occur and all but i only said that anyone is allowed in JV mainly because the teams in my area are rather small and there aren't very strict regulations as to whom may be on a certain team or can't be on a team

in my area, there are 3 teams. there is a freshman team, consisting of only freshmen who do not make varsity or JV, JV, and varsity. Varsity consists of the best players on the team, reguardless of age/grade. JV is the next tier down, or in my school, all the kids who cant play (because we dont have a freshman team)

still you have to be good enough to catch and pass and if you cant do that you cant play unless you want to play defence but even still.
