Well, I am some what sceptical that many people on TLF, if any, are into the hobby of raising/breeding Poisen dart frogs, but why not ask?

Anyways, does anyone here have any PDFs? I am starting a terrarium with a 20 gallon high tank that I just bought on sale for 20 dollars. I'm going to be putting in a water feature such as a waterfall/pond in a corner. Also, putting up the usual bromeliads and other plants to re-create the lush jungles that the frogs are native to. Then, with all the dozens of other things to be done to prepare the terrarium it should be ready to be inhabited by some frogs in a month or two.

I'm looking to aquire some Dendrobates leucomelas, D. auratus, or D. tinctorius. Probably the leucs though because I can get 2 pairs for closer to 100 and they are good begginer frogs.

Anyways, I'm not getting into the many, specialized details right now because there might be no other 'froggers' here on TLF. However, who knows, there might be a few of you guys lurking out there. Anyways, it'd be great to meet some more people interested in the hobby.

I did some project on those guys a few years back. They're cool, but are you sure keeping poisonous animals in your house is a good idea?

Thats pretty cool. Im just wondering, just how poisinous are they?

They actually are not poisonous when they are captive bred. However, in the wild, the plants/insects that they feed on contain toxins which make the frogs themselves poisonous. Right now, ones I would get would not be toxic to the extent of their wild relatives. Anyhow, even if they were that poisonous, you are not supposed to touch them anyways and would have no reason to do so. Also, I think you have to eat them for the toxins to affect you (with wild, poisonous ones) or at least get the toxins in your bloodstream.

The really poisonous one that the Indingeous tribes used to tip their arrows are Phyllobates terribilis. These are around 2 inches full grown, while the leucs are around 1 inch. Some PDFs are called "thumbnail frogs" and are smaller than a quarter.

If anyone is interested in them enough to look father into the hobby.......try looking around on www.dendroboard.com (I know forum rules say no posting links to other forums about lax but nothing is specified for non-lax forums). There is a wealth of knowledge to be found and frogs/terrarium supplies can be found by clicking the 'sponsors' link on dendroboard at the top of the page.

Maybe its just me, but I don't really want the most poisonous poison in the world in my house...
Yea, I was watching "Everything you need to know" on the discovery channel, and the poison on poison dart frogs is the most deadly poison in the world.

Good luck with that...

I just explained that earlier. These arn't the really poisenous ones (the P. terribilis), also, since these are captive bred they havn't had exposure to the plants/ insects they eat in the wild that are poisenous. The poison in one is insufficient to do really anything in captivity. If I swallowed a couple of mine, I could maybe, just maybe be poisoned, but how and why would I swallow multiple frogs?

They sell frogs of that nature for like 20.00 at Petsmart near me. Not sure of the exact type, but they are similar

That looks really cool. I've always thought aquariums and terrariums looked really cool but I never had the money to put into one. Frogs are awesome. I think I might get one for my dorm room because a lot of them are pretty low maintennance. I don't know about PDFs though. You should try and put some little fish into the water just for cool effect. Good luck with it and keep us updated with pictures of your finished terrarium.

I do not breed frogs, but I do have some experience breeding Discus Fish.

Pretty neat hobby, my father is really into it and I help him out with Water Changes and such...

Good luck to you.

Nope, they're not illegal at all. As far as I know, some rare species are illegal to take out of other countries, but once they are here they are legal.

That looks really cool. I've always thought aquariums and terrariums looked really cool but I never had the money to put into one. Frogs are awesome. Actually a lot of PDF's are pretty high maintenance. Unless you've got the cash to bust out on an automatic misting system (in the hundreds) and stuff like that it can get time consuming. You have to prepare fruit fly/ springtail cultures as food, change water, mist several times a day, actually feed the frogs, and don't even get me started on the work thats needed once they start to breed.

As far as the fish go, you would need a very large tank, 70+ gallons for that to work at least somewhat well. In a 20 like mine, the fish wouldn't have enough room to do anything, and if they did, the frogs would not. However, it's a really cool idea that would be great for a larger tank. The pond I might put in would be half a foot wide at the widest point and only an inch deep at the deepest. Not much room for fish I'm afraid haha.

Those might be D. auratus? Are they green/black, blue/black? I kind of doubt it because they usually go for 25 online, and 50'ish in pet stores. Maybe just common frogs. Basically PDFs go from $25(auratus) to maybe 800+(really rare species that are really hard to breed and keep) (also illegal to bring out of their native countries, but not in the US....I think) My friend has some that cost around 400-500$ for a pair and thats pretty cheap for that kind.

If I get a chance to check there, I'll check. I believe they are the kind you mentioned, however I do think that my price is fairly close. The place near me sells all their stuff mad cheap. I got a 10 gallon fish tank for 6.50. Their 20 gallon ones were 11.99. which is alot cheaper than the 30.00 I paid for my first one.
