I had this discussion a long time ago and it might have been discussed on the forum already but I couldn't find it. What do you guys think the percantage of skill to equipment is. I think that if you have perfected you stick it is 70% skill and 30% equipment. Because I bet if I gave some of the best players in the world a wooden shaft, with a Old school Head, and no pocket they wouldn't be able to make the adjustment from the plastic head, huge pockets, of today. Say what you want but I think to a certain point the stick does make the player. I know some people are going to say thats why you take time a practice to make yourself better with your equipment and that is why people are not using new sticks every single day cause you have to "break them in" just like a baseball mit. But i still stick by my opinion. If I confused all of you sorry because I also kind of confused myself.

It's all style
A player can have terrific skill with a certain type of equiptment. of course if they get new kind of stuff they are not going to be able to apply their same style of skill to it

I wouldn't consider it style I would say that it is technique or the mechanic's of the person.

I agree. Although as you said it is mostly skill...A very good player such as Ryan Boyle who uses a pinched razor; Dura mesh; Deep low pocket and a kpro. Would obviously do better with his stick he's gotton use to then a barracuda and a woody with soft mesh and no pocket.
That's just the truth.
But for younger players who buy an evo pro instead of an Icon. That won't make you a better player. You first ned to learn to gain the skill then once you get to a certain point the stick gives you the slight advantage.
I think it's something around 84% skill level. And 16% Stick once you get to a certain.
Contary to popular belief, Stick does affect performance. But not enough for a young new player to get the super pinched super small maximum ball protective stick.

I think equipment has a pretty big role. The pocket you are using can make or break you by either being too shallow (the ball doesn't settle down and fakes are alot harder) or too deep (can't release fast enough, and/or too much whip) I would say its 80% skill, 20% stick.

I think equipment is very important to some extent. Your are obviosly going to be terrible if you have a stick that has way too much or too little whip.

of course equiptment plays an important role
thats why theyhave improvements and "better" equiptment since theres always advances in the technology such as safety and such

once you get too a certain level that's wear the stick counts. Say hypothetically a good stick gives you 10% improvement in a player like ryan boyle 10% would be noticable but in a beginner 10% won't make much difference.

The higher the level of play the changing of the equipment will effect you game more.

Every single person who said it was ___% skill ___% stick said that it had to do with the pocket, not the stick. Stick doesn't make that huge of a difference, stringing does.

I think its about 95% skill and 5% equipment. the equipment doesnt make that much of a difference. say you had an answer and it worked great and then you switch to a proton. It will make a difference because of the pinch. so as long as you stay with the same type of head (pinch) then the equipment doesn't make a big difference.

well think about it this way, if you are just starting a new sport, would you want the best you could get or bottom line stuff? and pinch doesnt affect catching that much.

Starting off, its 90% skill to 10% gear. As you get better, it becomes 80% skill to 20% gear.

it's all relative.. since every player theoretically has similar equipment, the playing field is leveled.. you might play better because of a particular piece of equipment, but your opponent also plays better because of his/her equipment..

gary gait would be gary gait with a broken rotor, the better you get the less it matters.

what!?!?! pinch affects catching immensely.
is it easier to catch in this space | | or this space |lotsandlots|
the only ratio that matters is skill to practice, and the ratio goes like this:
lots of practice, lots of skill
little practice, little skill
its pretty easy now, isnt it?
