View Full Version : breaking a Trapping Ride

Some teams employ a ride that allows a team to bring the ball up untouched to the restraining line and then traps them between it and the center line. Usually they cover everyone and allow the goalie to be the one to walk the ball up. Obviously the theory is that it's easier for one defender to cover two players if the space is more confined. Up to now I have found it easiest to simply move the Dmen and midfielders towards the sideline thus opening up the middle somewhat, give the ball to my best stickhandling and fastest midfielder, and let him simply run one on one up the middle of the field.

Does anyone know any "team" clearing strategies that will work against this kind of ride?

If this happens to your team a lot, have a play where an attackmen on a far side (far left, for example) crosses midfield and the opposite d-pole (far right, for example) crosses with no one covering him. We did a sideline clear like this in college, only we used a middie instead of a d-pole, but that was off of a settled situation. Anyway, the concept is the same; get a guy crossing the midfield with no one on him.
