A slide is where a pole gets beat or is out of position and his back-up (another pole usually) takes the ball carrier.
A pass, a dodge a shot...just about anything can create slides for the D.

say a midfielder beats his defensemen(sp?) a slide is when someone else(on D) comes to pick him up so he can't just walk in and score

It is when anyone gets beat and the person who has his back up(generally regarded as 'Hot'). Also, anyone can be hot. It's not just poles.

Also, if you are 'hot' slide earlier than you would think you need it, time it so the last check someone gets on their man is your 'first'. Also, always always always slide body. I can not say that enough. He can't score if he's on the ground without the ball.
