Has anyone ever seen an indian pickup used in a game? This is my first year playing lacrosse and i just learned how to do it.
All the time. It's a tactic used by many skilled attackman. I personally practice it but have never used it in a game.
BTW....welcome to the site !

I cant Indian Pickup... but I would guess its more useful for Attackmen then Defensemen.
It looks cool though, and I want to try to learn it. I hear thats all they do in College... I havn't watched many games though, because I started playing after the season.

Yeah, you can use an indian pick up in a game, BUT you better be sure that you get that ball, because you usually have a very large man with a very big stick running after you.... I only do it when i am not being pressured, usually outside of the box, behind the net when the Off and Def are reseting. Any other time, i wouldn't recomend it. Of course, that is only when i am playing attack, i can't do it with my eclipse, i have tried, and the best thing i can come up with is when i hold the stick upside down perpendicular to the ground and use the scoop to pick up the ball

yeah im a goalie and i can do it with any of my sticks. Eclipse is pretty tough but the i can do it just about everytiem with the nemesis.

thats the scoop were the ball is on the ground, and u swing the stick over it with like one hand and magically its in ur pocket? ami right?

Indian pickup is more of a 'trick' if you ask me.
I've never seen anyone use it during a game, there's no advantage to using it, atleast I don't see it.
but I can do it with my d pole rather easily.

i believe it's when you go to scoop the ball, and when you do, instead of keeping it in the pocket, you pop it up into the air and you catch it

Not exactly RaptorMax, its basically what out_o_luck said:

i would think its more a a gamble in a game, its more of a safe bet to just scoop it. But if you can do it everytime i guess its not much of a gamble :concerned

i was doin it before practice one time and then my coach went crazy onme and said if i do it a game i will be benched for the season, said show offs do it games and it ain't worth the risk is you fail to pick up the ball, so needless to say i have never attempted one in a game

hey look at his stick when it hits the ground he just trew the balll up but when his stick hit the groundthe way he picked it up was an indian pickup if the got a better clip like minus the little trowing the ball it would be easier to under stand

I think that too many coaches are like that. Sure, it is important for people to learn basics, but lax is a progressive sport that keeps growing and evolving. I think that there will be a time when indian pick ups will be the norm, and i think that there are a lot of coaches out there that do not realize that. Another thing that i find myself argueing with other coaches about are bounce passes. Most people see them as show boating as well, when there are times that it is the most effective pass to make. As a lacrosse player, you need to utilize any tool that you have to get that 'lil ball in the net and if it takes an indian pick up to do it, then i am all for it. :banghead

I can see bounce passes but what exaclty is the advantage to an indian pick up?

I've used bounce passes to get assists.

well if your falling or to close to the ball to scoop through there is a time were the indian pickup is an advantage

Sorry I just don't see it.

i think the indian pickup is just to risky. btu i agree with farley on the bounce passes. they can be useful, especially on turf. they work real well.

hmm...i dun realli think its good 2 use either, but mebbe if the ball wuz goin out of bounds, and if u scooped it regular u wuld go out...but if u indian scopped it u wuld get it.....prolly still not reliable tho.

I use the indian pickup alot at middie to reach balls that are not close enough to do a regular scoop to. Messing this up is bound to find you a spot on the bench.

a lot of MLL players do the indian pick-up during games. pretty much if there's a groundball, they just run up to it and, in one fluent motion, they do the pick-up. pretty cool i guess.

i guess it could be useful in a certain situation, but i would rather stick to my regular scoop than go for an indian pick up

I know a few guys my bro used to play with always did indian pickups on full sprints... they were bad ***
I can w/ a long pole but anyone that tries it in a game (close to a defender) should be shot... it leaves you sooo unprotected, and your only doing it to show off...

yeah if i was a defender and i saw someone doing an indian pickup, i would just deck them out, it isnt necesary and its their own fault for leaving themselves unprotected
