im the captain of my school team (2nd year club) and we have been having some practices since school started. well some of the kids are starting to shoot sidearm. its so annoying because they arent good at it. some say that they cant shoot overhand :nono:
so what are some things i can say/do to make them shoot overhand?

or make the whole team do a lap so the team pressures the kid or kids who do it to stop it

Yea, don't make just them do a lap or push ups, I hate to say it, but make the whole team do them so theres more pressure on them because if they do it the whole team pays, and his teammates won't exactly like it.

if you shoot sidearm it'll either miss to the left or to the right
if you shoot overhand at least it'll hit the ground straight nd bounce and is always going towards the direction of the goal and not away from it as in shooting sidearm

exactly and you can change elevation in the same motion as in side arm the mechanics kidna change

Show them 3/4's. It's a comprimse for both, the players and you.

well i agree the making the whole team run but what i would do is when the person does it tell him to start shooting overhand. if they do it again make them run. and if they do it again make the whole team run.

no. i think you should tel them straight out- "listen. If i see anybody shoot sidearm, the entire team is running laps." If they do it, make them run. They'll atch on quickly. Heres the problem though: You're the captain, not the coach. If you make them run for sidearm shots, you better be ready to join them. I would be pretty angry if my captain didnt run with us.

From a coach's perspective I would say that team laps is the answer, it will help reinforce that everyone is accountable for errors, and that the whole team should be policing each other. I also agree that 3/4 shoot should be learned;the off season is a great time to be playing with it, but side arm should be left alone.

the running or push up idea sound good but you should also teach them when to shoot sidearm its not like its an evil shot or anything just make sure that once they actually master overhand and then go to sidearm they know when to use it

if they're good enough to rip the side arm shots let them do it imo. but if they're missing the net consistently, make them stop n make everyone do laps

show them the difference in how much better an overhand shot works

tell them to all line up and shoot sidearm. then stand next to him like youre guarding him and when he shoots just knock the stick out of his hands. This should teach him 2 things.
#1- dont shoot sidearm
#2- If youre going to shoot sidearm you better get that shot off quickly.
Personally i do shoot sidearm a lot because im actually more accurate that way. I can do it quickly on the run though so its not as much of an issue. In a game situation though the best shot is almost always overhand. Especially when in traffic

another idea
make everyone run/suicides/pushupups BUT them
if you shoot sidearm it'll either miss to the left or to the right
if you shoot overhand at least it'll hit the ground straight nd bounce and is always going towards the direction of the goal and not away from it as in shooting sidearm
With that mentality, an underhand shot should be just as effective...right?

i always teach the proper way to do it, and if they dont practice, and get good at it, they spend time on the bench

make the person stand in front of the entire team and FORCE the person to shoot sidearm aiming for a specific corner until he gets the corner 5 times in a row, every time he dosn't hit the corner make him do 5 pushups while the entire team watches. If he can hit the corner 5 times then hell, hes got a great side arm and let him use it, if he cant do it then you should have shown him AND the team that it dosn't work so well.

There is the time, like anything else, for an underhand or side arm shot. However, having heard it straight from the Mount while attending Starsia's camp in Syria, Virginia this July, Kyle Dixon, Dom Starsia and Marc Van Arsdale said to shoot overhand. Can anyone guess what I'm teaching my son and his teamates? Addittionally, one should NEVER try something in practice he or she had not nearly perfected on the wall or a backyard net.
