When was the video? Both of the Gaits used to work for STX, before Paul moved to Debeer about 8 years ago, and they have always altered their own shafts to cant the head. If it wasn't the shaft, I know they both used Turbos, Dominators, among Vipers among other things. If the head is ridiculously curved and weird looking it was probably the Raptor, circa 1994-95. I've never used one, but it was named in the recent STX Brine lawsuit and is like a cross between an old Warrior Cobra and the current X2.

how would a shaft help you looking like that

it didnt look like that. it was straight at the butt end and then starting around the middle of the shaft it bent down. This makes the end that goes into the head at a lower plane than the butt end of the shaft, making it offset and able to give you more power.

Not even so much for more power, but for more hold and better fakes.

Bending the shaft is just a primitive way of off-setting the head. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they started doing this before they were playing at SU.....before off-set heads really took off, maybe before offsets were even invented.

The benefit is the same as for an off-set head. Won't really make you shoot faster, just improves the holding force you create from cradling. Works like this - For every inch you drop the head below the shaft's axis, you get the feeling of cradling with a 1" deeper pocket.

The beauty of offset is that you get the improved cradling of a really deep pocket without sacrificing your shooting speed and accuracy due to a saggy baggy pocket.

since its offset it stays in the pocket longer and gives it more torque.

yeah the gaits are both well know for their bending. Paul Gait actually used the debeer arch at one time and in a video made with Gary, he had a totally bent out shaped shaft. It is awesome but Gary has to stick to regulations in the MLL

Shaft bending was a boxlax trick imported by the Canadians. Around 1991-92, NCAA put in rules against playing with bent shafts. If not for this rule change, we might not even have offset heads, since the Edge was invented (circa 1994-95) to get around the shaft bending rule.

Before posters here start debating about how offset increases torque, velocity, etc... make sure you have grasp of at least high school level physics. IOW, reciting Brine ad copy doesn't count.

how do they bend the shaft tho? just a guess but i doubt they are using aluminum and it would require some heavy duty machines to bend some of the other shafts i would think

some shafts were made bent
or you could take it to a tree

the same way the canadian kids on my boarding school team did, bang the stick on the goal.

they were most certainly using aluminum, in the 80s and very early 90s that and wood were the only choices

just take the shaft against the goal. even titanium will bend that way

i guess if you have an arched shaft you can put more whip in your stick but it will feel like less..but one handed cradling might not be good

there were also graphite shafts around that time, but they broke really easily if it was at all cold.

English wheels would be my choice to bend a shaft..

Thats what i was thinking, or something like a pipe bender, which is basicly a less advanced version of the english wheel..

You can run over it with a car--when the shaft is on the curb

Way to revive an old, dead post!

For bending a shaft - best gear is the pipe bending machines they use at muffler shops.

If you don't have access to real machinery - a blowtorch, a vise, and some oven mitts could get you a bend.

I know a couple guys that do this to bend the last three inches of their stick down by the butt to get a better grip when shooting.

i dont think you can use an english wheel to bend tubing, i'm pretty sure an english wheel can only be used on sheet metal

all that will do is kink and flatten the shaft.

the trick is to bend it without too much of a kink, that will weaken the shaft too much.

remember its illegal and a 3 minute NR penalty (dont know about box) to use an offset shaft with an offset head.

if you have a warrior titanium just bend it against a tree or something. we fixed my friends titan pro like that.
