anyone know the difference between these two calculators? I paid 140$ for the TI-89 was this worth it or should I pay 125 for an 84?

the 89 isnt banned in any classes, but it will practically do all the work for any level math class (yes even some college courses). but dont plan on using it for any standardized tests (i.e. the ACT or SAT) or your scores get thrown out it they find out. so i think the 84 will get the job done for almost any class but do whatever you want. its your preference

One of the worst things I did in HS (academically) was become dependant on my calculator.
Don't let it happen to you. I've been using a scientific calculator all throught college as an Engineering major and I'm never spoiling myself by going for a TI-something.

if i would have been allowed to use my ti89 in calc I and II, i would have gotten an A without ever doing any math. as LM states, there's a good reason it's banned.

I wouldn't go so far as to say you'd get a guaranteed A. Smart teachers would require you to show your work when integrating/deriving.

so if you somehow switched the 89 casing with the 84 casing no one would know and you could do w/e you want

It isn't banned in the SAT's. It's the highest calculator allowed. If you buy Barron's study books for the SAT2 1C and 2C's, they even implement strategies for problems using a Ti-89. And as far as it being banned in classes, it depends by the teacher. Most in my school don't care as long as it can't be plugged in or has a full out keyboard.

the ti-89 is a beast, its good for stat more than calc. the ti-84 is like the ti-86 (its what i had before the 89) and a lot easier to use. The 89 has a lot more feature, but i still can use it and its been like 5 weeks. I would say get the 84 only cause its much easier to use.

Isn't the ti-84 silver the same as the ti-84+ just silver and more expensive?

I think I'm gonna downgrade to the 84 silver. I dont need all the extra power and im only a freshman. Can someone explain the difference in memory to me though.
89 has -2.7MB/188K
84 has-1.5MB/24K
Is the memory a big enough difference to keep the 89 or is it going to go unused anyway. Ill prob throw a few games on it. Will I still have enough for class?
thanks for the input so far guys...

Just keep the 89. There is nothing that it can't do that the 84 can, you just have to know how to use it. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but I would never go back to my 84 now.

i had the 89 and the fact that it factors, expands, finds the zeros, and sovles for X make it worth the money

If it isnt, then it changed in the past couple years, because I am 100% sure that when I took them Ti89=banned.
Seriously though, thats pretty cheap. Luckily though most of the people using them have no idea what its capabilities are.
Ti-89s were basically made so that people in very high levels of math (math majors, jobs with lots of math) wouldnt have to deal with any lower levels of math or basic calculus. Basically it was made so that you never had to do any math by hand. Like I said, assuming you didnt have to show work, you could probably go through AP calc never having to do any work by hand.
wow. i want this for my birthday present. straight a's in math all through hs now :)

Ok, if you want games or a special function, go to www.ticalc.org . But before you download any games you need to have an emulator. Most games for the 83/84+ use mirage os. A lot of 89 users have the voyage200 which can run some pretty impressive games like: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/261/26100.html
If you have any questions just pm me.

Man, I have a Ti 89!!! Is there a site or anything of the like that can show you how to use it to its full potential? I mean I'm already good at maths, but I would still like to have the possibility of quickly completing & checking a question.
