Ok maybe everybody is holding back, but I am really surprised there has been no discussion on the upcoming ALL.
I'm sure each state believes they have a chance this year with rumours about Australian players being unavailable.
So anybody have any ideas about the teams?
And are any of our esteemed forum members playing this year? I'm talking about you Cannon!

Personally i like the concept of the ALL having watched the first year and played the second. I think it lacks in the area of Sponsership, and when it is played After all the state seasons have finished. The best way to get a crowd to lacrosse is word of mouth through the clubs which if played when it is cannot happen(not everyone is as dedicated to the game as the people on the forums). Also this buissnes of cost splitting is all good in theory if you play all for 3 years. if you play for one like myself you end up paying 800 dollars for a weekend away where is the cost sharing there.? just a few bugs to be ironed out and the tournament will be sensational maybe a few byes in the year were the teams go for a weekend not affecting club comps by there loss of the star players

Any news on telecasts of ALL, highlights program?
It's hard enough getting people off their bums and into the grandstands for games, having something on Toyota World Sports, Sports Tonight, Any Given Sunday etc.. will definitely bring attention to people who still think lax is a glorified field hockey.
One of my few memories of lacrosse on TV unfortunately is a punch-up in 'play of the day' i think...many years back.

Griff,
Mate, unfortunately im not playing. I came back from the States and Europe lacking in cash and with Uni work piling up (and a bit 'laxed out') so I gave it a miss.
As is customary in World Cup years the teams will be a bit flat and this will make the Vics less dominant. As far as im aware the vic team is not finalised

It could be that scooter's back is playing up, forcing him out, or, through lack of numbers they have decide to put Bosi on defense (which he is reasonable at) and bring Balfour in as a back up. Good to see Balf get a chance, good guy and good goalie.

victoria begin training this wednesday night, and it'll be interesting to see who is actually in the team, because i dont have a clue. during trials, scott garnsworthy was the only definite from the vic members of the aussie team.
other players who are likely inclusions: mic rodrigues (caul), aaron onofretchook (willy), josh naughton (i got no idea, malvern?), tristan tomasino (willy), adam townley (caul)...but any of these players could have dropped out/not been picked. i'll find out wednesday night and report back.

Dont think Tillo tried out, which is pretty much the case across the board!
And which is basically why they should scrap the interstate comp in World Cup Years. Well at least some other faces will get to don the Blue and slap around the Sandgropers and Croweaters :chuckle:

Fairy - stop being a FAIRY. Everyone knows that this Vic team is tantamount to the one years back that went to Perth, where the D was headed up by Skinny from Altona of all people. Give me a break. I agree with Cannon. Scrap the comp in the WLC year. History has shown that every fourth year the comp is a farce. Hell, if the likes of Naughton, Rodrigus et al, and the C'well import are getting a gig it becomes embarrasing, particulary for those of US who have busted our tails and made a legit team.
Cannon, if I'd have thought you were trying out, id have definately come down to whip a coupel past your ear lobes at practice...:-)

It is probably in some ways a good thing to have the lesser lights getting a gig in the ALL environment. Roy, this team clearly isnt last years team but not quite so bad as perth 2002 or Adelaide 2003. In fact it gives someone like Aaron Onofretchook a chance to play up to his potential which has been stunted being a small forward at Willy.
There are a few things in the works to shake up lax in Victoria (stay tuned) but one would be to ditch the ALL in WLC years and play a 3 way comp between the 3 winning State league teams from each state. This might actually save the ALL concept as it will ensure that there is greater talent, energy and marketability of the event.
Things that a rare and of quality are worth alot more.

interesting views for and against. i personally dont think the ALL needs a year off in world cup years. there are still numerous national players playing, besides - a 'second string' vic team of non-aus team players would still put on a quality performance, and expose these second tier players to similar competition from other states. the trick is to get the 2nd tier to trial when the star players arn't around.
players who didnt trial for victoria or play aus
henderson, blair pepperell, andy whit, gene kehoe, wayde k, young ham, smackey, morlang, matt garnsworthy, josh robinson, marty and jules hyde, blake and matt taylor, lachlan ross, tillo and wombat, miles, mcinerny, rhiann barr, spready, rhys thompson, carl menze, sabian j...you'd have a reasonabley healthy and worthy team, and these guys would be better for the experience...there's me 2 bobs
fairy
10-03-2006, 04:50 AM
strengthening a second string will help grow the game and add to the experiencial depth of ANY state- and that's what we need!
the world cup years can be viewed positively as an opportunity for these 2nd tierers-
"there is no reality, only perception" so these years may be treated as either building years, or a farce as Roy has chosen to regard them. the challenge is an equal one for all states.

I can relate to that. Just on costs, how much is it for Vic and WA to play in this series? For SA, we've been told it will be $1785.
As for the team, I was playing short stick all night if that's any indication how few short sticks have been out.

Not sure why Tillo would waste his time after the way Dave Joy shafted him last year. He was clearly the next best GK after Scooter, but blood is thicker than water after all and family ties did prevail. Maybe Dave can recruit Joffa back from WA.
Things must be desperate down there, when I get a phone call from the coach requesting me to pull on the turf monsters. Unfortunately work and.........just won't allow.

igloo dweller did weild the axe last night!...and he also dropped the hammer on some poor bloke from WA in the last qtr, nice cross check.
I thought it was was a pretty average game until the last qtr.
Balfour made some great saves, cocked up the the end on a clear which cost a goal but other than that fairly solid.
Brown made alot of nice saves, his outlets were not on by any stretch last night though.
Newman didn't blow the game apart but did do some freakish things. Sear didnt do alot, but if his shot was on target the game may have been much different. Stark was everywhere, Arnell was too but with less impact. Tokarua was mauling people all night, but legally so. Ben Reigar threw alot of cheap shots and seems pretty easy to get under the skin of.
Goddard , N Roost and Rusty Brown all played well.

yeh that sounds right,
Moments were good for Vic, from memory Chamberlain played well i think he got 1 n 5, had a good feeding night
Newman played preety well, it suprised me when Sear was trying to run him down and sear nearly got him..
The Vic F/O got the majority of the draws so they controlled it well, and the Vic D had a solid game

WA needs first use of the ball on the face off. With the strength of Vic's defence and goalie, WA must make Vic play alot of settled defence for big chunks of time, and must capitalise on transition & unsettled goals. WA had alot of unforced errors. What impressed me about VIC was their defensive pressure on the ball, and their long sticks initializing a number of fast breaks. Even their slow breaks(even number transition) looked like fast breaks. Just my two-Bob!
Well done to both teams for making an enjoyable weekend. Good luck.

GM,
WA appeared slow to realise (im going on friday night game) that the Vics weakness is their shortstick D. They were slow to invert the weaker shorties and let the otherwise very strong D of the Vics get settled. When they did take it behind they were successful a few times, especially dangerous looking was nathan roost who has excellent inside game.
Minotaur is right, they didnt win enough ball in the middle and I guess not having Rainey was part of the reason for that. Sear's shooting was off but he also needs to work on his inside game I think, he seemed a little one dimensional.
WA's D was actually fairly good on the friday night but a few very good individual efforts at times paid off.
The Vics need to take Townley off the attack line. Maybe throw him in here and there or on an EMO but otherwise he is a black hole for them. Alot of wasted ball.
Put simply WA can knock off the Vics but they need to isolate the Vics weaknesses better. The glaring weakness is SSDM, but that said, Arnell and Stark managed to put a couple of guys on their bums with good body position.

SA are going to have a tough time of it this weekend I think. The scores so far make that patently obvious.
I think our boys lax.com.au and BD49 have their work cut out for them!

well summarised cannon
WA will meet VIC in the final and they need to get their shorts behind, if they want to beat them. hopefully it will be a good final. I cant see SA beating VIC, they just dont have the depth.
VIC for me, they will control the ball as they will win most of the face offs.

Excellent two-bobs worth Minotaur.
We (WA) need to win some faceoffs and get first use. The 2nd game was lost in the first 15mins when we didn't have an offensive possession. 4-0 Vic. We also didn't have an offensive possession for the first 5mins of the 2nd quarter. 6-0 Vic.
The final will be won by the most disciplined team. Less penalties, fewer unforced errors and most time in possession will be the difference between 2 pretty even teams IMO.

our trip to adelaide was ace.
the friday night game was ordinary from a victorian perspective, 11-7. a combination of tiredness, boredom (we got to adelaide at 9am, killing 9 hours in adelaide is slightly tougher than drawing blood from the metaphorical stone), and complacency, combined with SA's nothing to lose situation led to a close, scrappy encounter. the SA keeper played well - 21 saves said someone. al gloutnay was victoria's best.
the friday night was excellent from a victorian perspective. a few celebratory beers (coopers pale of course, outstanding brew) at enfield RSL conveniently located next to our hotel were followed by a few more in the city somewhere, then plenty more at the grand in glenelg (a suburb that you can spell backwards). poor benny newman was felt up by a gay guy, who then tried his luck on an aggressive looking lebanese fella. the gay guy ended up unconcious. after a bit of a dance the obligatory lamb sandwich with double garlic sauce followed. from here MOST of the guys made it back to the hotel at about 3am. i was not one of them...
the saturday game was better for us, 21-4. more ball movement (too hungover to run said i!), more natural play, and perhaps SA had given up the ghost. igloo was sat by an anson carter hit - adding to what was already an impressive headache. stark was our best, although he got worse as his head cleared. carter was by far SA's best.

Typically the All-Star selections do not include the final.
And yes, we have only won one game in the ALL. Pretty disappointing. Has WA ever beaten Victoria? Or is SA's inaugural game win the only defeat that the big v has suffered?
As for getting those guys to play again, who knows what it will take.
I guess they need to find the passion, time or money to do it again. (probably all 3)

Is that right? (Not including the ATP and Queensland games)

The big question is ... has SA ever fielded it's strongest side? The Teams that won 3 in a row were pretty strong as was the '04 ALL side the lost most games by 3 or fewer goals after having a half or 3/4 time lead. If you could select the ideal 20 man SA team for next year assuming all players were available to play, who would you select?

I just want to say congratulations to Gavin Leavy and Warren Brown on making the All-Australian team, I think that is approximately 78,000 All-Star teams they have made between them, they have both been absolute assets to the sport and to see both of them retire from competitive lacrosse with a National Championship and All-Aussie selection is absolutely awesome and a truly fitting way for them to go out. And also congrats (to everyone who made the team obviously) but especially Anson Carter, Brendan Twiggs and Robbie Stark; Anson was clearly the best player in the SA team; and Twiggsy, for a young bloke to make the All-Aussie team is great, I don't know the guy but I've heard he will go a long way, I played against him in the 19s this year where he also went All-Aus, top effort. And for Starky to back up his performance in the Worlds with a Hobbes medal is sensational. (By the way, did anybody notice all three of the ALL MVPs and the last two World Games MVPs have been faceoffmen?).

WA's first National Championship since 2000, after losing 4 consecutive finals.
WA got off to a good start and were up 6-1 early in the 2nd qtr. Russell Brown facing off with long pole nullified the dominance of Robbie Stark which hurt us in Melbourne.
Vic rallied and trailed 6-5 at the half. Rob Chamberlain played well, and Vic got a few man-up goals from Stark and Townley....
Everything was in the balance in the 3rd and the 9-7 scoreline at 3qtr time suggested it was going to be a nailbiter.
WA scored the 1st goal off a man-up 10mins in to the last, and then Adam Sear blew the game apart. The game was topped by TLF's own 12345 scoring a sweet long stick goal with a minute left.....and then a big shut-out 30secs (just)by Griff in the cage :agree:
I suggested discipline would win the game in an earlier post...WA had 5 mins of penalties compared to 12 & 10 in Melbourne...certainly made a difference.
IMHO best for each team:
WA - R Brown, A Sear, W Brown, N Roost, S Leavy, A Brown
Vic - R Chamberlain, B Newman, K Nyberg, R Stark, D Balfour
R Brown & A Sear inseparable for BoG
PS - James Inge won the Isaachsen I believe

mrg16 - I thought Nyborg played a shocker in the final, he was turned inside out so many times by young Alex Brown and others he played on and was one avenue for scoring through. The DVD of the final will certainly be worth purchasing just to review how good WA played and their game plan was so different to when they went away, the Vic coaching side didn't counteract what WA was doing. Victoria were scoreless in the last quarter - been a long time since that happened. Well done WA.

Did any one stand out in the game from WA or VIC?
ALL Fan
11-13-2006, 09:08 PM
IMHO Adam Sear was the stand out from WA followed very closely by Russell Brown and for Victoria I thought Marty Hyde was impressive but restrained - by saying that he was eager to shoot on goal but held back on a number of occassions but when he did shoot, they were great cranks. He (and Marty is not alone on this) could have swung the game Victoria's way had he been more agressive. I was impressed with Ben Newman (first time I have seen him play) and he is one of the future playing strengths of lacrosse in Australia. The WA defence played extremely well and held Victoria out high but when Victoria did cut open the defence and get the close in shot they were unlucky on several occassions not to score (some great saves by Warren Brown and were either wide of the target or stick checks by the defence forced the shot astray). You'll have to buy the DVD when it becomes available to see for yourself all the great action this game produced. It was one of the better games of the ALL to date.

are you saying it was just poor shooting that cost victoria the title
igloo dweller
11-14-2006, 09:40 PM
poor shooting, poor decisions - this is poor lacrosse, but didnt cost VIC the title. WA played too well for us - they won because they raised their game to a level that VIC couldnt match. and...
we couldnt match rusty...stark and lander dominated the H&A games from the face-offs - WA changed this by putting rusty at the X - who responded with a best on ground performance. his game denied VIC possession. he scooped enough first possessions, and virtually ensured that VIC had no clean possession, quite an effort considering he was against newman, stark and tokarua's midfield line.
sear's game was very good, scoring game breaking goals in the 4th and some nice outside shots on EMOs. but sear wasnt BOG. he just shaded warren brown for third best on ground - daylight (or floodlight) was second behind rusty.
the battle for best youngster in the country finished at a 2 all draw. newman won the victorian games, but sear pulled out a good one for the final...
i was pleased the VIC could hit back after being jumped 6-1. the 14-7 scoreline wasnt quite the indication of the game (some garbage goals, followed by junk time goals when VIC's D had to push bolstered WA's tally).
finally...perhaps its a red-head conspiracy - but how did newman not make the AA team? 12 points (7g, 5a) from puts him behind only stark in midfield scoring, but his midfield play and 527 ground balls should have got him a gig on their own. if he didnt play a better series of games than at least 6 of the AAs, then im a rubber chicken.

I agree with you 100% igloo. how ben newman failed to make the allstar team left me absolutely stunned. he should have been one of the first players chosen. early in the final when we got a run on i thought it was newman who sparked the Vics into action. he was awesome on the groundballs. at one point i flicked a faceoff towards our attack line only to have newman come through intercept the ball and score fast break the other way. he was very unlucky not to be an allstar
the other unlucky player i thought was brad goddard. brad was awesome between the lines for WA and his speed in offence was an asset to WA. there were definetely a couple of questionable selections in the allstar team.

Guys, you should both put your names down. Getting quality players in this team will make all the difference. It doesn't matter that neither of you have played box, because I'm sure you would both bring differnt strengths to the game.
GM5, portland ain't that far away. When is their tryout?
fogolax03, any chance of you trying out for the titans?
