Most likely extra thumb protection. He might have broken it earlier, and will break easier, so he uses that.

dont they have something similar to that on the prototype gforce goalie versions they gave to colleges?

Only on the thumbs, and its the regular STX goalie thumb. The Hopkins goalie bolted plastic to his Gforces just like the player in that picture though.

The guy probably has a hurt finger. So he is using that thing for more protection.
