Recently heard that there are quite alot of quality players keen on this team. Hopefully we can get a big angry team of goons and gorilla's to suprise the big angry goons and gorillas of Canada, Iroqouis and the US oh and the Czech Republic. Lacrosse Australia recentl announced a new coach for this team. I think he's Canadian?

BlueDevil49...whats the good word? And hows the BC lax treating you?

Yup. "Scottish Heritage Team" was how it was spun. It was actually "Canada Lite". With the exception of that goaltender, most of "Team Scotland 2003" was about as Scottish as Team Canada's Curt and Derek Malawsky.

Good luck to the Aussies in '07.

Well from the list of names that I've seen, it looks to have a higher level of field lacrosse talent trying out for the team. How these players translate to the Indoor game will probably become apparent this weekend when the Aussie Squad has it's first training camp.

As far as fitness goes, we are as good as any other country. But as I found out during the last 6 months, this is a very different game to field lacrosse.

Offensively we need guys that work hard, especially off the ball, and are willing to get hit constantly on and off the ball.

Defensively we need guys that communicate really well to avoid picks and are strong enough to get through and around picks when they are set.

Goal keepers. We need guys with quick reflexes that are agile, but are strong enough to wear the huge pads. (One of the SA goalies will be wearing the latest RBK/Maxlax set this weekend. I know this because they came back from Canada with me on Friday). That or we find soemone that is exactly 4'9" at the shoulders and 4' high and shaped like a perfect rectangle.

I don't know about "perfect" but I've become rectangular :agree:

LOL - You'd be a great box goalie. Imagine your build, but wearing pads that extend past your frame by a minimum of 3 inches everywhere.

If you and GM5 are interested, you should register at the team site.

http://indoor.lacrosse.net.au/

It would be great to get box going all over the country. I know that Perth has some great Inline hockey venues that would make great box floors.

Well that was a demanding weekend. (Measured by my ability to walk on Monday. I hate living in a 3 storey townhouse on days like this).
After the fitness test, game and drills session, i would say that this team will be significantly better than the previous team. It was great to watch field players quickly pickup the fundamentals of box lacrosse. By the end of the last session most guys were pretty comfortable with the whole pick and roll style of offence.

Can't remember if it was Andy Ogilvy or Matt Oglesby, but one of them is marrying an Aussie. Apprently he'll be in Perth in December. If he wants to play, great!

There has been a weekend camp in Melbourne so far but I think you can still join the squad and try out. You must visit http://indoor.lacrosse.net.au and click the 'Registration' button then fill in the registration form to register as a squad member.

I think the coach said that there had been one WA registration, but for the life of me I couldn't remember who it was. Maybe GM5. He did mention the Portland Lumberjax tryout yesterday.

If you can make it to the tryout, give it a go. It would be a great experience for you. definately check out the NLL once the season starts. Portland won't be too big a drive for you once you are in Seattle.

do it GM...get beaten up against the boards

bluedevil49
10-23-2006, 02:00 AM
But the boards are your friends. They protect one side of your body while the other 3 sides take a beating.

Number 1 tip. Buy some rib and spine protectors.

The last squad get together was a few weeks ago in Melbourne and I've got to say the progresss has been pretty damn good. For the majority of the game, it looked like everyone was playing box lacrosse (Constant off ball movement, setting picks and rolling in, holding, cross checking, big goalies, etc). I'd say it's as good as the 5th and 6th teams in Vancouver that I played against. If we can get it to the level of the 1st and 2nd teams, we will be very competitive in Halifax.

The tournament in Adelaide later this month should be pretty good quality.

It is a much better prepared squad than the 2003 team was.

any one going to have a crack at the team list...bd49...cmon mate spill the beans!

bluedevil49
01-02-2007, 07:18 PM
Well the current squad is made up of the following

Runners
Damian Arnall
Mick Bown
Andy Burford
Damian Cliffe
Travis Croll
Chris De Mello
Anthony Feleppa
Tim Fry
Caleb Hall
Dan Hall
Wade Hammond
James Hooper
Dennis Juleff
Jerome Kirkwood
Dylan MacDougall
Rodney Maher
Philip Mcconnell
Cameron McLachlan
Anthony Munro
Darren Nicholas
Mark Norton
Keith Nyberg
Gordon Purdie
Lachlan Ross
Matty Schomburg
Adam Smith
Daniel Stiglich
Ryan Stone
Nigel Wapper
Charles Zarafa

Goalies
Wilbur Costa
Mark Gregson
Shannon Halliwell
Harrison Hristopolous
Aaron Machner
William (Bill) Martin
Phillip Roots

As for picking the team, tough call. I'll let you know in 6 weeks. From what I've seen there are a few definates, but then a lot of others that could be either starters, in the team or alternates. Hopefully the January Tournament will help sort that out.

Tough to make it as a goalie. 7 listed and only 3 being picked. As opposed to the runners wheres it's 30 for 20 spots.

This online bookmaker has Australia as a $15 chance to win the tournament. Here are the rest of the odds they offer if anyone is interested:

Canada 1.85
USA 1.95
Iroquis Nationals 9.50
Australia 15.00
Czech Republic 23.00
England 25.00
Republic of Ireland 41.00
Scotland 51.00

good find snake.

the best bet there is the Iroqouis. 9.50 is a pretty healthy return. I dont know how ireland got 41's where Scotland "canada lite" got 51's. Unless this Irish team is going to be "Irish" as in natives of Long Ireland

At the 2003 Championships Scotland beat the US (15-12) and Australia (16-10), and then the US beat them (15-9) for the bronze. They were, and probably still are a good team. They had great coaching in 2003.

I found all of the results at the sight below:

They were a good team, but check out the team list. WILC 2003 - Team Scotland (http://www.intlaxfed.org/tournaments/team.cfm?tid=2&teamid=21)
I'd like to see how many of them were actually from Scotland other than John Marr.

In 2007, passports should be checked. Each team can only have 3-4 non passport holders.

Hey bd49,

I'm going to the Tournament in Adelaide. Any idea what the game schedule will be like? What days are games on? How many games per team per day?

bluedevil49
01-11-2007, 04:20 PM
Games will be Friday, Saturday and maybe Sunday. Not sure yet if SA will have 1 or 2 teams. We've got our first round of games tonight for our local comp so we'll have have a better idea late tonight. A lot of guys want to play box, but not sure how many want to give up a long weekend for a tournament though.

Will most likely be 2 games each on Friday, and Saturday with the final on Sunday

15% of each team can be made up of non-pasport holders that can prove their heritage (i.e. photocopies of thier parents or grandparents birth certificates or a birth and mariage certificate of their spouse)
