What are some good ways to get the opponent to leave his stick out, or just some general good checks. Of course theres the pokecheck, but what are some of you Defensemen's specialties.
My coach showed me "The Kitchen Sink" today.
Its where you are pushing against your mans back, and you reach over his head with your right hand and smack the attackers stick out of their hand. Have to be careful not to helmet check them or hold their shoulder though.

so you smack them with your hand???
i like to do ding-dongs. it an over the head check.

No, you keep your pole in your hand and hit them with that.
Maybe the dingdong is the same thing.

I have always been partial to the Liberty Bell check, it's illegal, but aren't all of the fun things in life?

Personally the only checks you need are slap and poke. Any of those specialty checks are just how you get penalties and get beat too. The other reason I don' t use them as cause I honestly don't think they work very well.
One of my friends does all these fancy different checks. Like kayak and all that good stuff.
The one that I've tried in the past is when he has his back to you, in your right hand you have your stick bout halfway down and you spin it real hard and fast when attack has their stick in one hand.
That's the best specialty check I know.

I tend to play D with a nasty mindset, even when the play is on the other side of the field, I try to have some contact with my attacker...It could be just my stick touching their elbow, move it to their leg, hips, annoy the hell out of them....I also like to get some slight cross checks in, nothing major, just enough so he knows I am there and that their will be a lot of contact,,,
In my early years, as Mark will tell you, I was a bit cheap and loved to use my stick to hack, hook and spear my enemy....I would also give them a good wack it they got too comfortale in front of the net as the play was heading towards the other goal...Again, D is a great deal of mental toughness as well....

It may be a little dirty but its good to try and get attackmen out of their mind sets.
When I push someone out i split my hands only a couple inches and go right for that lower hip with a jam and push.
Waht ever works, ya know?

*this is from a goalie*
I think that the most important thing a d man can do is let his attacker know that no matter how good he is, he is not gonna get anything for free all day long. Let him know that he is going to have to work for everything that he gets, then he is going to think twice about everything he does, because he knows that there is a big boy with six feet of titanium standing between him and the goal. Once you do that, you have won the mental battle, and that is half the game right there.

Sorry, liberty bell check= a two handed baseball style swing at the stomach, if you hit em hard enough, he makes a noise, just like a big bell.

lol.. definitely illegal.. hehehe
During one of my games, someone on my team hit someone else in the shin with their stick on a deadball, barely though. So the defender(who already had unsport. conduct called on him earlier) takes his shaft in two hands baseball swing right to the side of the head. He was ejected but let me tell you, the guy on our team had a nice little headache.

I'd hate to be the attackman in that senario

Far as checks go, I chop check a lot. Poke check is invaluable but it's pretty missionary, no wonder nobody gets really excited about it. Those two plus slap pretty much tide me over.

Alot of times I can do a liberty check, and I get away with it because is looks like a slap check. Say the attackman is running around the cage, and you are around 3 feet away putting a hell of a lot of slap checks on him. You rear back really far and let your stick fly. The attackman moves his stick because he knows it will knock the ball out. You hit him really hard in the stomach and he drops the ball. Ta Da! A liberty check.

thats the worst check i have ever heard of, and it is very suprising that you get away with it unless you play in the MLL cause they dont call anything there.

What do you mean worst check?

I basically play pretty simple no fancy stuff. I find that poke checking people constanly and fast totally annoys then most of the time and gets them angry and they tend to lose their concentration and start calling you a mother ****er which then gets them a penalty. A good hard slap knocking the stick out of their hands is also helpful every once in awhile.

what i mean by the worst check is that it serves to purpose, you will most likely get called on it and any good attackman will yes move his stick but hes not gonna stay there and let you hit him, while you take your movement to "rear" you stick back, hes running by you and to the cage. Stick with pokes its the best check out there, lifts and slaps are decent.

I do not like poke checks because they don't do anything unless u hit stick

I disagree. They serve a very real purpose if you know why you're using them.

yeah poke checks work effectively for me if you do them constantly in stacotto as long as you stay with the guy.

i agree. i never really used the poke chech but during summer league i've been messing around with new checks and stuff, and it is really effective. not only does it cause them pain but they get so angry they screw up or they lose their consentration and drop the ball.

yup it is the best thing if you do it fast fast and hard while still staying with them it gets them totslly crazy and is fun to watch them lose their temper and start calling you names .If you can do it st hard and stay with em then it is fairly ineffective but if done that way it si quite nice.

I tend to poke untill I get an opening and then I just hit their stick to make them lose the ball.

yeah same here. its pretty much something to do until we can get off a good check or hit.

look you all think what you want but it is a proven fact that the best checks arent the flashy ones, they might look good, eveyone sees marylands defense doing them right, but where did maryland end up. Stick with the basics and play good sound fundemental position defense.
