over the summer at the Rutgers MVP camp they gave every player a free ticket to see the Pride play the Barrage, so i went for like 20 mins. Half way through the second quarter Brian Dougherty makes a great save right on the door step, absolutely stuffs the guy, gathers the ball and clears it. once the ball got over midfield dougherty steps out and fists pumps it right infront of the attackman. I just died laughing, it was probably one of the most in your face kinda things ive ever seen a goalie do Now im not sayin i think dougherty is a hot head or anything like that, cause after all he is brian dougherty and could do this :bartmoon: after a save and i would still laugh. so my question is have you or ahve you not ever celebrated a good save during a game?

Usually I dont celebrate, but if im on fire :flamed: that game, I would usually just get the defence pumped up and jump around in the crease and tap all 3 posts on the cage with my stick.

I'll congratulate myself in my head, but almost never do anything outward.

Though at an indoor game the other day, apparently some parents criticized me for celebrating after I stuffed a guy up close. The thing is, I don't remember this, and I was probably just trying to stretch my arm, which was stiffening up.

I do celebrate big saves. It gets my defencemen into the game and they know that I am back there. It aslo gets the crowd into it. The most I will do is mabey fist pump after the ball has been cleared but nothing else.

yes i take off all my clothes and streak all the way upfield and score.

I don't see why not. It's not frowned upon to celebrate when you score (as long as it's not excessive). Say if it's a close game, I stuff the guy right on the crease, and win the chase on a rebound. I'm going to scream and pump my fists.

agreed with GF, i occasionally do, but i make a lot of really close saves, not to brag, i just have a nack for saving them, and i do get a little ansy and have to do something after a clear, but usually the kids on the sideline yell stonewall cus that was my nickname

all i have to say is to act like you've been there before.

go by the rules....
rule 1. goalies are silent heroes.
rule 2. goalies are silent heroes.
rule 3. goalies can lose concentration from being cocky
rule 4. have a nice day.

I don't like to celebrate. On big saves, just the crowd cheering is enough to get me pumped up. I do yell a lot though to keep my defense into it.

maybe the fist pump

I don't celebrate after big saves. Usually I'm way into the game and trying to concentrate on the next thing to care about the save. I'm not into the whole trash talking or taunting bit, celebrating only comes at the end of the game for me. Even then it's usually just a few high fives and slapping of the sticks, nothing excessive. The people who celebrate after goals or saves usually just make me laugh.

I have never celebrated after a save. I've thought in my head, "holy sh!t I can't believe i did that," but thats it. I don't even usually think anything but "yaaay!! THey didn't score!" I hate when attackers cheer, why the heck would I do it making a save???

Does jumping and a few fist pumps count as celebrating? not in an exsessive amount.

Do as Walter Payton did whenever he got into the endzone. Act like you've been there before. I do the same.

everything is based on the tempo and situation of the game

yes...definitely act like you've been there before, but at the same time standing there is pretty damn boring

show some emotion (this doesn't mean jumping around like an idiot and taunting the other players like i do sometimes) ...cause you could be a great goalie, but i'd rather watch a decent goalie that is showing passion and doing something as opposed to a great goalie that just makes saves or and then stands there

johnny unitas - one of the greatest qb's of all time...also boring as hell
joe theisman - amazing...not as great as unitas (arguable) ...but a lot more fun to watch and a lot more character

point is...it's all up to you as to what you want to do, but remember that people are watching. playing to the crowd is huge, and knowing what kind of crowd is watching you is just as important. whether you do it appropriately or inappropriately is your choice.

me personally...i'll make it known that i'm not just some goalie standing there, but everything is based on the situation and tempo of the game as i noted above

I believe in being the silent hero, as stated above. Sure, occasionally you want to get the crowd hyped up. But you dont want to lose focus or concentration during your moment of revelry.

THe most i done is scream yeah after saving like six shots one after another. Normally my teamates and fans do enough cheering for me. If i go to wild i lose concentration. I just go all out once the game is over.

One thing I do try to do, though this doesn't really count as celebrating, is when after we clear the ball I tap gloves with the defensemen if they're close enough to me.

Absolutly nothing during real games, that's my own rule for myself, but I was having fun in indoor because there were a bunch of kids I knew on both sides of the game, and this amazing and huge defender who has a crazy shot tries an air gait-ish move, which I absolutly stuff, so as I'm clearing it I get in his face and yell "Stuffed like a turkey!"
It was hilarious because he's around 6'6" and I'm about 5'5".

i never celebrate any big saves or any saves at all, I just concentrate on the game coz if you celebrate too much you get cocky and it affects your game. i just concentrate on my game, dnt even celebrate after the game

i dont really celebrate but i jump up and down a few times as its passing midfield to get myself pumped up not be to a dick to the attack

After the ball is cleared and on offense, maybe defense and will hit sticks and pump and each other up. I don't do anything outward. Don't give the other team a reason to get pumped up.

My goalie has a ritual/taunt whenever we score on the opposing team, he runs out of the crease and gives the defense a pound and runs back to the goal. The first time he did it to me i was kinda confused because we were standing at the midline, i was like what are u doing here. It's kinda a taunt towards the attack, pretty funny.

as a goalie its pretty much understud that your the leader of your defense, and in some situations, your team. to go out into a game, cheering and celebrating every stuff or big save is ridiculues. your a goalie, your job is to stop the ball from going into the net. by cheering and celebrating, IMO, it makes you look like it was lucky.

o dude i when make a wicked dirty save. like a diving or stone a kid that made like 20 fakes i normally jump up and down. with a war cry or a hoot and haller. i go AWAL! of course not when the ball is stop or sumthing like that. normally get the team and the sidelines going

yes buy by being the leader, you set the emotional tone for your team. so if you get frustrated they will get frustrated. if you get pumped, you have a team full of pumped guys. sounds better than the former doesnt it?

Personally I dont like to celebrate to much, you dont want the other team to know what you are thinking and when you celebrate after a save it will show the other team that you think you are the shiznit, also you might by accident pump up the other team because they will want to shut you up.

the only time i will celebrate a save, is when you get one of those like, 4 save's in a row kind of thing. where it's like boom boom boom boom. then you finally get a clear
thats the onyl time i feel really good. and will maybe give the post a tap. or maybea fist pump.

LeKKeR
12-17-2006, 11:04 PM
celebrating and pumping up your team are completely different

so i guess i don't "celebrate" but "pump up" my team and crowd

a lot of your are talking about losing concentration. no offense but, if you're worried about losing concentration then you're thinking too much in the first place.

have some fun guys :)

ps - i'm not saying that goalies should do cartwheels after a save by any means, but goalie1215 was right, you set the tone as a goalie.

im gonna quote quint kessinich(sp?) from what he said in the maryland/princeton quarterfinal...

"...a good first save can really get a goalies confidence up and lead to a better game or a streak of great things..."

not showing it is just the better way to handle youreslf because cockiness = loss of concentration.

the most i ever do after a big save and the ball is cleared is sometimes touch gloves or something. actually making a celebration out of a save is a bit much to me, unless its like the last seconds of the game, and you dove from ten yards out of the crease (for some reason) which won you the game

PW_LAXMAN_07

also, if you have a big celebration or something, if the next shot they take and score on, your confidence gets shot

When I make a big save I don't have to do the celebrating, my teammates do it for me. My d-men have been known to do a little trash talking to the attackman that just got stuffed. Only once did I celebrate a big save. We're up by one against a rival that has a very good team, a couple seconds left we're man down and they get a one on none shot on me, I get a piece of it then chase it down, we get the ball I'm amped pumping my fist and jumping around. Just to see the dejected looks of the other team was great because they just lost to a weaker team hurting their chances for the playoffs.

I remember one game when when it was Hinsdale Central vs. Naperville North and this middie from HC got a breakaway with like 15 seconds left to tie the game and it was one on one and I just totally stuffed him and everyone roared. I'm not going to lie I cleared the ball and pointed to the crowd and threw up the shocker in glory.

When I make a big save I will usually just whack my stick against the post hard, and get ready for the next shot.
