On insidelacrosse.com there is an interview called "shooting from the hip".
This month Trevor Tierney was interviewed. It wasn't all that interesting as a whole, but one thing I sort of did a double-take when I read was this:
"Pads: My chest protector is tiny. It looks like a lobster bib. It’s made for 11-year-olds. It covers my heart and that’s it. Honestly, it doesn’t hurt when you get hit in the stomach or chest. That’s the least of my concerns as long as my heart’s covered. If you ask Jimmy Beardmore, he says you shouldn’t even wear a chest protector. I’m not sure if he even wore a T-shirt under his jersey."
Now I agree, being hit in the chest or stomach doesn't hurt all that much, but Jimmy Beardmore sounds like he needs serious help. This could be some sort of an inside joke, but it sounded serious enough, and I'm going to respond to it as though it is completely serious. I know of at least three instances where goalies have been killed from being hit in the chest, WITH a chest protector on. So why on God's green earth would anyone play without a chest protector?
Anyways, I'm hoping this was a joke, because Mr. Beardmore sounds like he endangers his life as well as the life of everyone he coaches.

you do know this interview was in the ncaa championship issue right :dummy:? jimmy beardmore was one of the best goalies ever at maryland and the reason he is so good is he had confidence his dad (bud beardmore) instilled in him by assuring him he could play without a chest protector.
ps jimmy beardmore coached mike gvozden, so he must know what hes doing :rolling:

Whatever, I first saw it today on IL...
And I'm not saying he's bad, I'm saying there's a difference between confidence and blind idiocy.
And I honestly don't mean to offend him, but if Bud Beardmore told him he could fly, would he joyfully leap from the Brooklyn Bridge?

Theres and Interview on Alford too, it's hilarious i think its in the Canada team cover issue. But, regardless how good you are playing without one is stupid. Funny Tierney says that, sounded like he was tough guy yet he wore shin pads this season, I think vs L.A

For the record, I've seen Tierney's chest protector. It is VERY tiny, yes, but it's quite exaggerated. It doesn't cover his collarbone but it covers his chest and stops about midway on his stomach. He got it at Princeton (just assuming since it's extremely grimey looking and has a Princeton "P" on it).

I believe Quint Kessenich didn't always wear one either. Everybody else, however, absolutely should.

i didnt always wear one, dont ask me why, the best i can come up with is that i was young and stupid.
back them we didnt know about things like commio cordis. plus with the advent of the offset, pinched head, titanium, and bigger, stronger, laxers shots are harder today. that, with what we know about CC, you should definately be wearing a good chest protector
beardmore is no larry quinn, but he was a fine goalie, and yes, he was nuts. i believe his dad was the last coach to win a NC at maryland.

I can't say that I wear a lobster bib, but I do like to wear the smallest chest protectors possible, both in hockey and lacrosse. It really helps your quickness if dont have to fight against an oversized chest protector. I'm not saying that Tierney isn't crazy, but he's got a method to his maddness.

Oh, I completely agree: Tierney's choice is a safe as any... as long as you have a protective cover over your heart, you're fairly safe in my book.

some goalies wear one shin pad, but a pro wearing them cause hes afriad or something if he didnt have to wear them he shouldnt be a goalie

i have read in several places that commio cordis kills more baseball catchers than any other position, so dont think that you are wearing 100% protection

Exactly, and unfortunately none of the current crop of chest protectors, either for lacrosse or for baseball, have been proven (experimentally) to provide much, if any, protection from commotio cordis. The best protection against CC hasn't been well studied or implemented yet, and it seems (statistically speaking, at least) your best chance of not having it happen is getting older and having a less pliable chest wall.
Beyond that, ask your school/club/program to think about funding an Automated External Defribilator (AED) and then learn how to use it.
