Once the mesh dries, does it dry as hard as it was before, or is it a lot softer?

its dries softer how soft it is really depends on how much you condition it.

softer, but it could also depend on the mesh that you have sometimes even fabric softener doesnt work
you could also do shampoo and conditioner in hot water
