not sure if this would go in the officiating thread or the equipment thread.....mods feel free to move
Ok first of all would it be legal in anyway to alter the mouthguard..(I.E. Cutting it down due to gag reflux).........And yes i realize that this would void the dental thing on it

Well if it is making you gag, then you're aloud to cut it. The refs can't tell if it's in your mouth. Just don't go around saying to the ref: "Hey guys, is it legal if cut this? Cause I did!"

Actually just to add in that when it is in my mouth you cannot tell it is cut although you can tell when i let it out...........Just needed to know b/c of the UD tourney tommorrow....All day and i don't wanna not play
Learn to suppress the gag reflex. It could help you later on in life.

The only reason i did this is because all my other mouthguards that i have used were not that far back in my throat making me gag but this one is so i actually cut it and now it only covers my front like 6-8 teeth

I cut mine down, I can't stand it going that far back in my throat, but it doesn't matter that I cut mine because I chew on it so much by the end of the season there is like nothing left but a small piece of chewed up rubber.

You realize when you cut it you make the mouth guard useless for what its supposed to do. When you cut it it makes it uneven so if you do get hit really hard your mollers and grinders will hit and not your k9 and fronts. You will not only ruin your teeth but you will probably get a very bad concision that might take you out of all sports for the rest of your life or kill you. So the moral of the story is theres a reason why the mouth guards are that way and you are better off not wearing one if your going to cut it.

See actual imput thanks although it is too late now to get another by tommorrow at 7:30.........I'll just have to be careful and wait until season starts to get one from the school

it would be actual imput but he's incorrect. cutting down a mouthpiece from 9-10 teeth to 7-8 teeth does nothing to hinder the protective value of the guard. it would take an extreme force to move your front 8 teeth into the guard or into your jaw far enough for your last 2-3 molars to touch. even if a force strong enough to make your teeth touch hit you, theres no way that it will have enough force to mess up your teeth or give you a concussion, save from dropping a piano on your head (in which case, a concussion is the least of your worries). as long as you have a decent mouthguard (hopefully with the multimaterial build) a cut down to get it out of your throat wont change the protective value

Thank you very much I figured that since it covers the K9's then the molars wouldn't fit.....i actually bit it as hard as possible and the molars were never close to touching....Thanks alot guys

I like to play it safer than sorry, and I had a friend that cut his mouth guard and got hit really hard into the boards in hockey and he now cant play any sports with contact any more. They said if he didn't cut the mouth guard so short he wouldn't be in the predicament he is in.

I hate mouthguards that I can barely even breathe out of. You can cut it but I would recommend cutting a whole lot off.

Look into one made by your dentist. I have one. Best protection offered by any type of mouthguard. And because its molded so exactly to your teeth, you don't gag. It fits perfectly, but it is very expensive.
