View Full Version : 1 on 1's - How do you play them?

I'm sure every goalie has their ways on dealing with a 1 on 1, so let's hear it. How do you set up for a 1 on 1 and what do you do when he is about to shoot?

I know a lot of goalies that will run out of net and try to put a hit on the shooter, but that's not my style. I stay in the net and wait to see what the shooter does. If you run out, the shooter can just wrap te shot right around you. if you stay in the net, there are so many things that could happen:
1. the shooter rushes his shot or misses the net.
2. a D-pole catches up,
or so much more.

come out at him, but not for a hit
i barely pay attention to their fakes cause they almost always end up high cause if i try to look at their fakes i'll probably just get faked out

All good points. I try and hold my position as long as I can. I try not to move and let him go through his series of fakes until he commits. Most times shooters want u to bite on the first fake or any of them for that matter and then go off - stick side

depending on how close, i always step to him and if im in a close 1 on 1 i most of the time follow his head, try to shadow it. there isnt really a set way to follow 1 on 1s...the real thing my coach tried to teach me was always be on his stick side, it cuts the angles a lot.

for one on ones ive always been successful just play them straightup; follow the fakes and keep your positioning. recently ive been trying out baiting to one side (usually stick side) or baiting high and its been working pretty well too, plus it just makes the sick point blank save look that much cooler.

i try to draw stick side high before he shoots, also i take a step out

thats part of my game plan...try to wait for the opening and time it.

If Their Close Enough try and shadow their stick, and meet with it.
and stay as stilla s possible, all attackmen want you to move to make their shot easier.
and if it comes into my mind i'll attemp to bait alittle, if their a little farther out.

in the event they're close enough and i step to meet stick on stick. reguardless if i save it, they're ending up on the ground. no doubt.

I don't move until they commit. My fellow teammate told me "They're on a fast breakaway most of the times, they're tired, they just wanna get rid of the ball. You got the easy job!" And it's so true, I think of that everytime I'm on a 1 v 1.

the "right" way of handling it is to take one step out and never go for the first fake because "the shooter never shoots on the first move in a 1 v 1" but if i "know" the shooter and his tendencies i will put my stick right on his.

This is a good thread that involves a lot of the 1v1 mentality: http://lacrosseforums.com/showthread.php?t=40642&highlight=1v1

Basically, I sit and wait for them to make the first move. After seeing a lot of 1v1s (it's a lot more common in the wlax game and is bound to happen a number of times every game), I've found that's the way that works for me. Just concentrate and watch the ball. Don't pay attention to the fakes, just have good footwork and patience and the saves will come.

I approach it as if it were an 8 meter when they are about 4 meters away from me i kind of have an idea of what they'll do and if not just stay on their stick side and shadow them =]

one on ones comming around from the back i stay on the pipe, and wait for them to shoot it right at me orrr if he comes all the way to the front of the crease he should be on the ground and if im feeling saucey i bait them put my stick at hip height, not like lazily and then it forces them to shoot to stick side high so you just bring your stick upas the shot is comming and match stick to stick. and react to the shot not the shooter

I step out and match his stick or I bait him. I lower my stick so he wants to shoot high and just make the save up high. It works everytime.

Make yourself a wall and stand right infront of his stick. Most likely it will hit you or if your really good at positioning your stick/body he will pass it to you.

if you know hes going to score, and these bait things dont work for you, nail him and flip him just colobere the guy so next time hes in close he will think twice. Plus the hit takes the pain away from the goal.

actually, some shooters are good at just placing the ball without a fake. I've seen Mike powell do it a number of times, and it works a lot. almost all goalies talk about how a shooter ALWAYS fakes, so just shooting will work a lot.

I dont think a coach wants you in goal if your playing for "a good feeling" :nono:

Yeah, but what happens if you're tied and it's the 4th quarter. Then you feel like an idiot. when it comes to situationes like 1 on 1's you have to be smart instead of trying to level the kid and attampt to be the hero. Brains over Brauns, son!

Different actions for different situations. Of course i wouldn't hit them if it was tied in the 4th, I would go for the stuff.

No. Hes doing it for me to stop goals. If i get into a 1 on 1 situation, I'm pretty mad at my defense anyways for letting that happen, so really not all my fault if he scores. 1 on 1's are not high percentage saves for goalies, If he expects me to make the save every time; than i guess goalie just isn't my position.

I would say it would be best to stay in the net so the shooter has less room to make a shot. If you come out then all he has to do is shot around or over you, there is a lot of possibilities since you have the whole goal exposed.

Our goalie takes one step out and throws a quick slap check on the kid's head, so it either dislodges the ball, gives the D time to catch up, or its when he's shooting and the ball just goes right into our goalie's stick.

Look, I'm not trying to bring you down. I just don't think that it's a smart idea because after doing it for so long, it becomes your instinct or natural reaction, so when, or if , it happens, you're kinda stuck and you don't think. you just go.

I say whatever you do don't make the first move, I find many shooters react poorly in this situation and make a bad move where you can react quickly and make the save. But besides technique don't think too much, you'll beat yourself.
