My senior year of college I wrote a 25 pager for my Women in Modern Japan Class/Capstone requirement on the slow adaptation of modern women's rights in Post WWII Japan, specifically focusing on the prewar generation. Tht was fall, for my final semester I did a 37 pager for my Post 1945 Japanese History Research course. My topic was the literary/popular culture influences as applied to the national psyche in coping with disasters begining with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, up throught the Kobe Quake and Tokyo Sarin Gas Attack of the late 90s and speculating on the future as it was refelcted by said pop culture (such as the visions produced in Akira, Jin-Roh, Battle Royale). It was a fun paper to write.

My Bachelor's is in East Asian Studies with a focus on History, so it's a fancy roundabout history major or sorts. That research class was a lot of fun. It was small and we essentially did all the proffreading and editing of each others papers, all our Prof (who was also my advisor) did was make sure we met our deadlines and critique our hairbrained ideas in their historical context. There were some really good papers on a wide range of things. The Japanese interpretation of Western Religion in Pop Culture, Architecture and the future of Japan (as a densly populated nation on an island), the Life and Works of Yukio Mishima (one of Japan's best novelists, Women's/Mother's growing roles in Japanese Education to name a few. It was fun getting to choose your own sources, which sometimes meant watching anime and tons of Godzilla as "homework"

This year I had to do a 15 (or was it 16?) research paper on the poem "The Man He Killed". The paper was labeled "Senior Paper". It is a requirement that you have a passing grade on this paper to walk. Oh man, looking back at that paper, it almost killed me for like two days. I was one of the lucky ones out of our class becasue I was required to turn it in early (extra points) becasue I was heading a Junior Retreat the Friday it was due. I was so nervous about it, that when I got back to school on Friday I rushed to see if it was graded. Sure enough, it was. Not only did I get a passing grade, I got a pretty high passing grade (96%). The paper was divided into 4 sections. Section 1 was biography, 2 was the actual poem, 3 was our own views on the poem and 4 (the killer) criticism. I hated section 4.
I have a question for roycegracie47...where the he** did you find the information to write that lengthy of a paper? And was that your Senior Thesis that you are talking about?

It was a 500 level research course, it was a senior thesis of sorts, but it wasn't necessary to graduate, the reason being I had made the other paper I mentioned (the one on Women in Japan) as my Capstone project, which was a requirement of my major (essentially it turned a 10 pager paper into a 25 and changed it from a 400 level course to a 500 level for credit purposes). As for info? I had planned on taking that research course the previous semster and since it was run by my advisor I asked him what to do to rpepare for it so I had some extra time to prepare my bibliography (which included a lot of movies and novels, as well as some history texts I had already read several times over) so I could get a jump start. Plus 5 pages were cannibalized from a small 5 page Japanese lit paper I had written the previous year (as the book: Haruki Murakami's Underground...my favorite non-fiction book of all time) was a large focus of my "theory."
and I'm a self-proclaimed master (although after reading my final papers, my dad agrees with me at bs when it comes to writing essay exams and larger papers..and so did my profs because some of those grades were proof, others sometimes were not).

This isn't necessarliy long, but at the end of each book we finish in English, we are expected to write 6-8 pages answering one essay question on the book IN ONE HOUR AT THE MOST. Oftentimes it's less, because you take a 100 word vocab test that same period, and if you have less than one hour to write the essay when you finish the test, sucks for you. Big time.

25 pages on Scottish Identity Through Military Service in the British Army and the Consequent Affects on British Identity. It's fun trying to find primary sources from over 200 years ago. They are out there...just usually locked up in the national archives and museums in a given country. Also, 25 pages on the sociological explanation of Scottish Highlanders Classified as a Martial Race. That one has me digging through brutal social theory from people like Durkheim, Marx, Weber, Parsons, etc. At least there's no direct research involved in that one. This semester, my final semester, I will have written close to 120 pages for all my classes in order to graduate. Kind of brutal when you figure it's roughly 3 months time to do all that, on top of working and attending class, reading the huge stacks of books, and all the exams. YAY COLLEGE!

not to deter you, but there are a million AmHist majors out there. If you major in an East or MidEast Asian studies course, you significantly more marketable. Colleges are always looking for people in those areas, because its not common. Im doing south and south east asia focus.
But the longest was a 32 pager i just wrote on Bushido and the Way of the Samurai

I'm writing a 40 page paper right now.. grr.
Excerpt:
I have been forced to defend myself and my friends from death or grave bodily harm before – I’m just thankful this situation was able to prepare me for it. My friends and I were hanging out on the Chesapeake Bay, eating crackers, drinking soda – you know, guy stuff. It didn’t take long for the gulls to smell the crackers, that is, if gulls can smell. If they can’t, they saw them. Gulls have very keen eyesight. Either way, gulls knew we were eating crackers, and they wanted in. Not wanting trouble, my friends and I obliged.
It started out innocently enough; there was a flock of 10 birds eating the crackers we threw to them. The innocence didn’t last long though, soon enough more birds started joining the flock. Some of them looked pretty tough, too. My friends and I started to get worried – what if we ran out of crackers? What would we do then? There could be a full stage riot, and we weren’t prepared for it. I looked around the boat to take inventory, and sure enough, we were down to the last bag of chips, and the birds wanted more.
Thinking on my feet, I looked around the boat for something else we could throw the birds – they didn’t even have to be edible. Just as I found the bucket full of empty clam shells, my brother called up to me that they had run out of crackers, and he couldn’t stall them for much longer. I grabbed the shells and ran up to the stern, ready to do battle.
It didn’t take the birds long to realize they were being pelted with clam shells, not crackers. This only made it worse – now they were angry. I knew that I had put it off long enough, and it could only come down to one thing: war.
I looked around the boat for something I could use to defend my family and friends. I almost used the anchor, but decided against it – it was just too cliché for me. I wanted something original, something manly. Then I laid my eyes on the perfect weapon: a boogey board. I grabbed the board and jumped out onto the dingy tied to the end of the boat, where most of the birds were angrily congregating. The second I jumped onto the dingy I realized I had bitten off more than I could chew, I was surrounded by ravenous birds. I did the only thing I could think of, I started swinging. It only took a second or two for the weaker birds to get hit or fly away in fear.
Now I was left with just one bird, a swan, and he looked pretty angry. He squawked at me, I squawked back at him. At that moment, there was a mutual sense of respect between man and goose - not because we didn't hate each other's guts (we did), but because we could feel that each of us had tremendous strength and spirit. This would be a great skirmish - a battle royal.
I made the first move – a fake. The swan bit, so, catching him off guard, I swatted him in the back of the head, knocking him off balance. Furious, he dove under the water. Thinking I had won, I turned around to my friends and started to celebrate. Then, out of nowhere, he shot out of the water like a bat out of hell – I knew I was in trouble, I could have easily mistook him for Articuno, the legendary Pokémon.
He climbed higher and higher into the air. At first I was confused – what could he be doing? Then it hit me, he was going to try to dive bomb me. I had been right! It was Articuno’s signature move; chances are they had trained together. As a child I had trained Pokémon, so I knew just how dangerous this could be – in fact, I’ve been dive-bombed by my fair-share of things in the past, and I would go as far as to say this was the most potentially lethal.
I knew what I had to do, I didn’t want to, but my family’s welfare depended on it. I whipped out my master ball, and got ready to use it. Now, only an advanced Pokémon trainer can understand how big of a sacrifice this. I had been saving it for a Mew, and it is literally be impossible to catch one without it, and you only get one.
I knew I’d have to time the toss just right – too soon and I could pick up a Pokémon that was just passing by, like a Squirtle or something crappy like that; too late and I could be killed by the dive – or worse, be caught in my own master ball – the ultimate irony. I heard a loud whistling noise and knew his descent had started – this was it. I grabbed the master ball and got ready to toss. I thought back to what Colonel William Presscott had said, “Don't fire until you see the white of their eyes," so I didn’t. The second I felt he was within range I let the master ball go, and, sure enough, it worked. The majestic beast let out one last squawk as he became enclosed in the master ball. I let out a sigh of relief, finally, it was over.
The assignment is supposed to be a serious analysis of your childhood and how it has shaped how you are now. Oh well, it was worth it.

This was my longest report. I had to assume that the world had been destroyed by an "event" (which I had to come up with) leaving only a few survivors that had banded together in some form of tribe. I then had to describe the past world (today) in mythological terms. I had to create stories that would symbolize transportation currency food everything. EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It took me forever to simply describe how we got around on earth using mythological processes and ways of writing. Even after I finished the report. I had to make a costume get up in front of the class and present the report as if I was telling the story to children.
