View Full Version : Bamboo shaft

I have some bamboo growing in my house (outside in summer), that we keep fairly trimmed down (and have to cut it often). When we cut it though, we just throw the trimmings away.
After I threw some cut bamboo away I thought, "This would make a pretty good lacrosse shaft.". Now, as most people know, bamboo is very durable. The downside though, is that it is really flexible. The flexibility could help with shot speed though (somewhat). When you shoot, the shaft will probably bend back, and kind of "whip" forward, therefore making the shot faster. I know it probably won't be the strongest shaft in the world, but it definitely will be the fastest growing!

So, I figure I will let it grow it a little (about 40"), then cut, and shape it to look like a shaft, and will see what happens! I know this may not the most practical of ideas, but it has to be worth a try. It's not costing me anything, so it can't hurt, plus if I do like it and it breaks, a new one will grow back soon!

ps- bamboo is considered a grass I think, so I will be able to brag about my new grassy :agree: lol.

EDIT: CRAP, I just noticed somebody already made a thread on this!

I think it would work untill it dries out.

Good idea. So, I take it you have the flexible kind? Mine is stiff, and is actually holding up pretty well (I still have it). When it dries out, it will become lighter, but if it is indoors when it dries out, for whatever reason, it doesn't splinter very easily. Now, mine weighs in at about 4.6oz.

I say go for it. If it doesn't work, oh well, it shouldn't take you too long to make it.

What you could do is try and cut it into 40" strips and then glue them all together using gorilla glue or some other wood glue.

One problem....After a week it will snap in your hands.
