FCA National Team tryouts are open to anyone (cost is $65.00). There are approximately 13 tryout location dates held throughout the country (mostlt the east coast as well as OH, CA. TX, TN, CO) starting in January. The FCA is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and this team is part of their lacrosse ministry. Check out the website for more details on their mission. If your values don't line up with theirs, this may not be the right fit. Last years team played in one tournament and finished 1-10.

hmmm...i think you got that 1-10 record wrong...i am a sophmore and last summer i played for the FCA jr national team that played at the battle of the hotbeds...as a team we did ok. it was hard cuz we never got to practice together, just showed up and played. as far as exposure goes i got a ton of exposure from that trip. i recommend it!

Actually anybody that doesn't make the team can play with one of the developmental teams at the ow2p tournement. I played on the developmental team last year and you still get good expousure, I know that Maryland and Navy were at the tournement watching the games.

i actually was talking to the guy in charge of it yesterday and he was saying how there are going to be more then one national team (two im guessing) and at least two jr. national teams as well as the developmental ones. This is due to them increasing the number of tryout locations. Im about 99% sure about this becuase it was coming straight from him.

that's a HORRIBLE record.
You are wrong! The FCA National High School Team that played at Tournament of Champions record was not 1 - 10. They placed 3rd at the TOC even though they had only practiced together a few times, and several of the kids from the FCA team have already signed with D1 schools. Dom Scalzo- UMBC, Grant Catalino - U Maryland, Jack Dudley - Cornell.

FCA is a very weird religious thing that’s why people like Tom Zummo (midfielder from SF Dragons) and Chris Garrity (Team USA goalie, Boston Cannons) come do their clinics and camps. I hear it’s so weird that people like Jed Prossner and Brodie Merrill even show up to camps! Sorry for the sarcasm, point is that FCA is not weird. FCA stands for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, its non-denomination Christian sports ministry and has been around for about 52 years now. They are also very secretive, that’s why they have website called fca.org where you can find out pretty much anything you want to know. As far as the 1-10 record, thats wrong since FCA A Team did much better then that in the Tournament of Champions where they finished 4th there and there weren't 11 games. Also they had the most All-tournament players of any team with 4. They had players like Jack Dudley middie from #1 team in the nation Boys Lation or Grant Catalino #21 Senior in the nation according to IL or Thomas Wood #20 Junior in the country. They had some other great players as well. FCA was so bad two years ago though that they only managed to beat Western Empire Team 7-2 and had players from that team go to G'town, MD, PSU, and others. Oh they are so weird that Inside Lacrosse has decided to partner with them, crazy.

Your comments was 100% on target except the FCA A Team finished 3rd at the Tournament of Champions. I know several of the players and have seen their bronze (not authentic) medal. They all had nothing but great things to say about their FCA experience!

sorry to bring this up again but what do you do at the tryouts
lax_agent003
01-27-2007, 06:21 PM
you wre split up into a couple teams and played for about 15 minutes while the coaches evaluated everyone so later they could split up into more even teams (it was pretty much worthless at the colombus tryouts) and then it went into three different stations and did 1 v 1's, 3 v 2 , and 5 v 4. but I believe only the 1 v1's were taped. There was a short break and teams played a 30 min game while the other two teams went and listened to some college players/coaches answer any questions. That was all for the tryouts. Afterwards a few coaches talked to the parents and players regarding FCA and what was to happen now regarding making the team along with the recruiting process. ..... anybody else who was there, feel free to make chnags to order and such my memory tends to suck

I got the email and it said I was recommended because a college coach said I could play at a high level. when I contacted the guy, he could not tell me who recommened me or how he got my e-mail address except to say they got it from tourneys around the country. just sounds odd to word an email that way and then find out it went to a billion other dudes.

idk man.. There seems like theres going to be major politics involved... It just seems dumb to pick 20 random kids out of 13 tryouts... It doesn't seem feasbible to do so.. I bet there will be predominantly Maryland, New York, and Pa/Va/Nj kids.. Not that I have anything against anyone else.. but I cannot see the selection for those 20 spots being fair.. Does anyone feel the same way..?

actually, my friend's brother drove up to ohio from kentucky and made the team. i heard it's pretty awsome, and they get really cool custon gloves and nice CPX helmets
ive been to a couple camps and my best friend played on the team. he goes to a small school in delaware and still made the team so they dont look at schools at all. also there is a video made of the tryouts and it is sent to alot of top d1 d2 and d3 colleges i have the list. the team itself goes to alot of tourneys such as battle of the hotbeds and theres alot of scouts there as well. its an awesome opportunity to play with some of the best in the country.

This team is a great opportunity for you guys! One of my sons has played with them, so I've seen it close up. Spending time with others, and sharing a positive experience, regardless of your religious denomination, is never a wasted experience.
I will also share that each tournament resulted in several handwritten letters and a few phone calls from coaches. And as I watched from the sidelines, it was obvious that the college coaches don't really care about win-loss records, they are recording effort and skill and attitude. At least one mentioned to me that he often notes the attitudes of guys on a team getting whipped as a good indication of whether the boy is "coachable."
This year's format will provide great exposure for the boys that make it. And I have also heard that the turnout at tryouts has been so fantastic that the club will field several teams, including some regional teams for boys that just want to play closer to home, but want the fellowship and college exposure.

I agree with Gcclaxster67 and mdfairplay above. My son also played the B (Jrs) team in 06 and he wasn't from a lax school or even a big lax hotbed. Yes, the record for their team at Hotbeds was "lousy" but consider what they did accomplish, given that they hadn't even met one another until 11 am the day of the first games, when most if not all the other teams had been playing for at least a couple months if not a couple years:
FCA led New Canaan (CT) and LI PrideB through most of both games but lost by 2 to NC and 1 to LIPB. To lose by only 2 to one of the top teams in our state is still an accomplishment. The boys also held NC to only 6 while the eventual Hotbeds champion North Shore Rage allowed new Canaan only 4 goals.
The Hotbeds FCA team held LI Sting A (record 8-3) to only 5 goals, same as Mass Elite (record 7-4), while the '05 Hotbeds champ Minn Elite (record 11-0) allowed LIS-A only 3 and Southern-MD (record 6-5) let LIS-A score 8.
FCA's Hotbeds team lost by only two goals also to Baltimore Elite (record 7-4), holding them to 7 while Southern-Md & LI Sting C allowed them 6.
So, yes, our boys lost a lot of games, but they didn't do so badly as the scores seem to indicate, plus they did so with a tremendous amount of fun, spirit, pride, cameraderie and a love of the sport and of the ministry of FCA that sadly, a lot of players (and parents) seem to be lacking, no matter where they come from.
My son also got some really great college coach attention from that tourney. There are several substantial DI and DIII coaches waiting to hear from him if he makes this year's "A" team, so I'm interested to hear that there may be more than 1 and/or several B or regional teams too.
And for the skeptics here are some additional famous, recent FCA alums: Barney Ehrmann (Georgetown), Brian Farrell (Maryland), Andrew Mace (Gettysburg), Kevin Kelly (Towson), Brendan Ryan (Salisbury), Andrew Stimmell (Penn State), Dom Scalzo and Michael Bryan (UMBC), Andrew Rheinhart (Delaware).

i just went to the tryouts this year at the pittsburgh location and to all u guys that say its a weird team. dudes its just a team like any other. the only difference is the people who play for it are christian. the game is still played the same.
also the tryouts were cool. as a goalie u got alot of playing time they just rotated goalies every 5 min. and only five goalies showed so it was nice.
and for those of u that were talking about the different teams. the guy incharge told me that there is going to be to national teams. and each tryout is going to a regional team for each tryout location
>Baltimore
>boston
>columbus
>denver
>long island
>nashville
>philadelphia
>pittsburgh
>richmond
>rochester
>salisbury
>san diego
i also got called by the head guy and he wanted to know if i would be interested in playing for the pittsburgh regional team that is playing in the GATE CUP at gettysburgh college,of course i said yeah, even tho its not the national team status is this something that college coaches would look at. also i ma only starting my second season of lacrosse as a goalie and lacrosse in general. let me know what anyone thinks about my chances for like a D2 or D3 school. be honest too
just thought i would share my experience about the "weird " lacrosse team

I went to the gait cup. I played for the ohio team but I'm from michigan. Our coaches were sweet and used Fruit Loops to show us plays during time outs and such. I dont remember what our record was but we did alright. But i do remember the last 5 minutes of our last game we just completely dominated the other team and scored like 6 goals to win it even though we didnt really care anymore.
I played for FCA in the One Way to Play tourny the year before and then the Gait cup last summer and its always fun. Theres something different about playing for FCA. The difference is a good thing though. Its hard to explain, if you have the chance I sugguest trying out and playing.

The email was for people involved in earlier FCA events, not new signups. Don't know the answers to any of these questions, but fill out the form on the page, like I said, which WAS just updated 1/10/2008: "All new information will be posted on this page once it is finalized. Please feel free to continue to check back for the latest updates. You can also fill out the form below to receive updates regarding the tryouts...You are always more than welcome to call the FCA Lacrosse office at (410)891-2643 or email us at lax@fca.org...."
The way that page has worked in the past at least is once they have dates and places firmed up, they list a tryout signup form, you fill it out and put in the location you want to tryout in. If they're not even listing the tryout dates/places yet, they're not finalized. Keep checking their site (even after dates/places are finalized too) and do the form now and you'll get the news as soon as anyone does.

Mayhem, there isn't one team to "make" really and tryouts are open tryouts, for all HS players. There were two national teams last year that toured together for the week. Then there were at least 1 or 2 other "young guns" teams of juniors and/or sophs that I think either did Hotbeds or the Gait Cup. Then for anyone who didn't make any of those teams, or were a bit younger, there were numerous regional teams and they played locally and elsewhere at tourneys. It doesn't matter if you're a freshman or soph, there is ALWAYS a place and a great FCA team to play on, if you have the desire to play. My comment on the process and experience is in the first page of this thread. (read entire thread for more answers that you might be looking for)
A couple posts above gave the FCALAX.COM website. Check there and you'll get all the answers you're looking for, at any time they're available.
Click on the "teams" link, then "boys HS" and the FAQs and press releases ought to help. DEFINITELY fill out their inquiry form on that page to get on their mailing list.
My son played for them two summers in a row and will be playing with the men's team this summer as well. Great group of people and players. Last summer one of their coaches was Navy's Glen Miles (now a HOFer) and one of the prayer huddle coaches was Jay Motta of the Philly Barrage. Competition was pretty tough too. Some of my son's teammates from last summer aren't committed yet but some are: to Syracuse, Towson, Maryland, Navy, Delaware, Hobart, Le Moyne, St. Lawrence. Not everyone will be that good, but everyone seemed to always help everyone else step their game up a bit as an FCA LAX team.

If you're really away, and can't get to either Ontario Canada or Gettsyburg College, then yeah, it won't work. In recent years, they don't have practices beforehand. They just start playing together after a day together or so, so that shouldn't be an issue.
No way to be able to travel from where you are to either those 2 places? You don't need a car once you're there.
FCA National High School Team will compete in Ontario on July 31st-August 3rd. The Developmental Teams will by in the Gait Cup at Gettysburg College on July 2nd-July 5th

probably not, but making that team puts you up with the best in the country and isnt a major plus on ur lacrosse resume

Gait Cup is a fairly big deal. Google and check their website for college coaches who attend and teams competing (so far a good list). FCA LAX (HS) has always been a 1 or 2 summer-tourney effort (the nationals played for a week together last summer), not a "club" team playing regularly. Check FCALAX.com's HS team history page. Also I think, wickedlaxer, *maybe* meant to say that it IS a major plus to your resume? It sure was for my son.

ok..that acually makes it better for me. Cause if it is only the Gait Cup they play in then it wont be a huge problem for me to leave Cape Cod(where i am all summer) to go play

^same here. what grade are u in now? I dont know if my parents will drop 157 bucks on just a tryout though. Is there any charges after you make the team? and does this team give out custom gear (gloves, helmets)? Its cool if they dont but im just wondering

I know you weren't asking me, but last 2 years the cost of the tryouts was lower. Check the website to see what's included in the increased cost to tryout.
There is a cost to being on the team, to cover the tourney(s) played in, the travel, the meals, the stay-overnight places, and you do get very good custom gloves with the FCA LAX logo stitched on and a custom helmet (last year it was Gait), an Under Armour or similar FCA LAX shirt, an Athletes' Bible. If you made the nationals team you also got a custom Harrow bag (huge, like the blackhole bag from Warrior or similar) with the FCA LAX National Team logo on it.
If someone REALLY REALLY wants to be on a team, and money is really really an object, call or write FCA. They do have a limited # of partial "scholarships" they can use to help people who really want to be part of the team. I know one kid who paid the small deposit and then things changed and he couldn't afford the balance; they helped out with the rest because he really wanted to be part of the whole FCA mission, so it is possible.

Conn. Lax mom, you seem to know your stuff for FCA. Are you saying if I try out, I will be able to play on an FCA team, be it developmental or what not? I just don't know if my mom would drop 157 to tryout if I don't have a guarantee to play anywhere

Are the high school teams divided by grade level or is it all high school players competing for one team?

Laxicon Devil, I know what it was like in the past 2 years, and I think some things have changed so I can't be 100% sure but I think that the answer is yes. It depends on how many devlt. teams they're having this year. Last year, this was what they decided "After all the tryouts were over, FCA decided that the best way of serving the 500+ kids that tried out was by forming a regional team of the kids from each tryout."
I urge you to send them an email from that website page of theirs, asking this same q. They 've always been good about replying. I hear you, it's a lot of money to not be sure you'll play, so definitely contact them to be 100% sure.
Cougarlax, last year there were teams that had mixed grades. The top 2 teams (the nationals) had virtually all rising srs. Then there was a Young Guns team of rising Jrs. The rest were mixed. I don't think they broke the teams out by each grade. Again, keep checking their website and email them. Things did continue to evolve as the year went on and so many kids tried out. They did change plans a few times (who the competition would be, etc.) and that is what happens when trying to schedule a once-only set of teams.
But playing with FCA is recognized by a lot of coaches as a good thing: the kids on my son's team last year will be going this fall to Maryland, Towson, Syracuse, Navy, Messiah, Delaware, Le Moyne, St. Lawrence, Air Force, Hobart, Navy Prep/Navy, and that was considered the "A2" team of the two nationals teams. Some on the A1 team are going to Princeton and other top schools.

Last year there were no tryouts even IN Texas at all. To my knowledge there have never been any tryouts in any year in TX. These tryouts have been growing steadily for several years. I don't know if anyone from Texas went to a different city to tryout. Closest one would have been Denver, I suppose.
This year, the TX one is Dallas, TX, Episcopal School of Dallas, May 24.

Thought this would be of interest since on one of these threads we once discussed the levels/types of players FCA LAX has had on its national HS teams: I just discovered that FCA LAX added a webpage to their site that shows the colleges the national HS tour team players ended up playing for (or will next year), here: http://www.fcalax.com/Teams/BoysHighSchool/NationalHighSchoolTeam/NHSAlumni.lsp
(it also shows where they're from and their positions)
