I have Searched the forums but none have answered the questions i am looking for.
I Live in the durham region and want to start playing lacrosse. I am 15 and i realize that might be kinda late. I am trying to choose between bx and field. But i am more fond of box lacrosse so unless someone can change my mind i am most likely choosing box.
I no almost nothing about the sport but am willing to learn to play. I just wanted to get some info on Girls Box Lacrosse so that way i can gain some knowledge. There are no girl players close to where i live so any drills or anything i can do with just myself would be greatly appreciated.
Also the only club i have found information on is the Clarington Minor Lacrosse Association. So if anyone knows of any teams in my area thx in advance. I am normally a basketball player but because lacrosse is in the
off-season i thought it would be a great opportunity to learn to play.
P.S.
I do plan on getting a stick for christmas any ideas

ok i think you should choose box lacrosse b/c you said you play basketball and they are similar in many respects and field lacrosse is kinda gay anyways. also, i wouldnt worry about being too old to start playing, i only started when i was 14 and i now play jr b box and field for the baggataway champs so as long as you have a bit of talent and a lot of dedication you'll do just fine. as for drills, just get yourself a lacrosse stick and go to your local school and toss the ball at a concrete wall over and over. this is seriously probably the easiest and least expensive way to improve your stick skills. anyone at any skill level of lacrosse can benefit by just tossing the ball at the school wall. also, if u get a stick just practising cradling the ball will definately help. as for lacrosse in the duram region.... there should be plenty of leagues out there for you. pickering, ajax, whitby, oshawa, clarington pretty much all have home lacrosse teams.. depending on what level and age group but you should definately be able to find a league that suits your needs in the duram region.

Hi!
If you live east of Simcoe in Oshawa, contact the Clarington Minor Lacrosse Association (http://www.claringtonlacrosse.ca/phpnuke/)
If you live west of Simcoe, and live in Whitby, contact Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association (http://www.whitbyminorlacrosse.com)
Both associations have really good girls box lacrosse - both rep and house league.
If you live in Ajax-Pickering contact the West Durham (http://www.westdurhamlacrosse.com/)
If you live in Uxbridge or Port Perry, contact the UMLA (http://www.uxbridgeminorlacrosseassociation.com/)
I am not sure if either of those associations offer girls box lacrosse, but check anyways.
There is also the Oshawa Lady Blue Knights which have amazing girls field programs - both rep and house league and you can contact them here: http://www.ladyblueknights.net/
And of course, your school might also have a girls field program. Ask around.
As far as which type of lacrosse to play, well it is preference. But it is important for you to determine because the sticks used for girls field are very different to what you can use for box lacrosse - that is, you can use a girls field stick in box, but you cannot use a box lacrosse stick in girls field. (best bet: two sticks)
The same thing goes for stick skills. They are fairly different sets of skills with each game - the same idea - cradling, passing, catching, etc. but because the sticks are different, there are different ways of doing each thing.
Both forms of lacrosse are awesome to watch and play. With box you have to move the ball much faster and you will get hit. Trust me, you WILL get hit.
If you can work it out, I would suggest trying both forms of the game. The boxla house league in Clarington or Whitby is generally over by the time the Lady BK's hit the field and both will offer much instruction for the new player.
As for getting prepped before the season here is what I suggest: get a stick, find a wall and then throw the ball against said wall (DO NOT throw it against your parents garage door!!) You can purchase some really good books on both forms of lacrosse, so have a look at Chapters on-line (they almost never have any in-store). The best thing is to find someone who can show you the basics and you can take the basics to the wall to practice...
Otherwise, people here will share some instructional links...

A good beginner stick for box is the Gait (DeBeer) Intrepid that can be had for 60-70$ nowadays. You can find box sticks at Sportcheck, SportMart, National Sports & Canadian Tire. Usually National Sports has the best selection come late winter, early spring when box lacrosse starts.
You can also check out Lax Shack (Proboss), which is a lacrosse specialty store in Pickering:
1080 Brock Rd. #4
Pickering ON CANADA
L1W 3H3
(905) 837-8326
Hours
Monday-Friday 11-8
Sat 11-5
Sun 12-4
Their website is broken, but here it is anyways: http://www.probosslacrosse.com/
Equipment depends on what game you play: for box here are the equipment guidelines:

If you want to play girls lacrosse, go to the Lax Shack and ask to see Troyhann, Dana or Mrs. Santos and they will fix you right up. Troyhann is a top notch player. A decent girls stick will cost you around $100.00.

The LAXShack is the best place this side of Peterborough and past Toronto to find anything that you need for lacrosse. If you can't find it there go to TNT Lacrosse in Peterborough.
