i was just wondering what people thought of the new nhl rules. i think they are great but with one exception. i dont like seeing games like 8-5 or high scoring like that, it could be because i played hockey five years ago and like the old rules...i dont know. it seems like with the high scoring, goals just arent as exciting. it used to be if you scored a goal it could very pivotal in the game situation and it is a huge deal. i like the idea of one goal being the difference in a game. what do you guys think?

its not really a rule but when ever there a fight(witch is rare cause the reffs jump in so fast)they cut to commertal on VS. Dose anyone know why?(sory to hjack)

IDK about that, but does anyone else have to turn the volume wayyy up when they watch VS. ? On my tvs it always has to be up twice as loud as any other channel.

As for the new rules, I think they are pussifying hockey. It used to be a sport for real bad guys, but now it seems like anyone and his brother can play and be sucessful. Youth and NHL.

I do like the scoring aspect though for the sole reason that it gets people involved in the games a bit more. More publicity for the sport is always good.

I have no problem with an 8-7 game vs. a 2-1 game.

The new rules do two things:

1. put creative, individual-ability-within-the-team-framework skills at a premium, and

2. change the nature of the game into a more offense-oriented format.

I happen to like that type of game, so I appluade the new rules.

I will respect the person who prefers the more defensive type of game. I also enjoy the 2-1 soccer match, but you really have to know all the nuances of the game to appreciate that.

The "new" rule cater to the more finesse player...I'm down for that.
I don't like the way the neutral zone has been handled though. Also, the fact that the game has become less physical is kinda annoying. While being a finesse player myself I love the rules...
The defensemen in me loves to see a punk winger get railed from time to time though, and that doesn't happen as often as it should anymore.

I had a 20 minute long rant written about how I feel about the NHL but I'll just sumerize it;

I HATE THE "NEW" NHL

They got it half right:

Good:
Most of what they've done for the five on five rules is great. This includes:
-moving the net back,
-moving the bluelines out
-keeping the goalie out of the corners (I'd rather they did this by re-legalizing goalie hits outside the crease though),
-deleting the redline,
-tag-up offsides,

Bad:
Watching 30 minutes of every 60 on powerplay SUCKS donkey. Powerplays are boring as hell - One team picking on a wounded opponent until they make a mistake......then the puck is iced......whoopee!

What also sucks is the cheezy hooking and holding calls that are creating 30 plus minutes of powerplay per game. They were certainly right to tighten things up over before, but on some of these calls, the "victim" didn't even lose half a stride, and didn't lose puck possession......in a men's sport for men, that should not be a penalty, dammit!

What also sucks is the penalty for clearing the puck over the glass. Fix this, make it like icing so you don't get a change, but please get rid of the penalty. This has caused so many weak 5 on 3 chances, and if 5 on 4s are boring to watch, 5 on 3s are worse!

What also sucks is the point system. You can't have some games worth three points and others only two. If you're going to give teams a point for losing in OT or SO, make a third period win worth three points.

Even:
Shootouts - I really hate seeing games decided this way and never saw the problem with ties, but shootouts are exciting as hell.

i agree with rockstar. i like all they did with the ice format stuff. i dont like all the powerplays. i hate when the refs call those hooking penalties all the time. and shootouts are awesome.

i could say more, but rockstar got it all

Not really. Now we have had a chance to see the rules put into action, and not just about what they were going to be.

Nope. One year ago we were only two months into the new rules, and no one really knew what the hell was going on yet. You have to take a fresh look at things now that we've had a full season.

Yup. We are certainly starting to get a better idea of the long term effects of the changes.

One thing - We're starting to see average goal production fall slightly after the orgy in 2005-2006. This is partly due to one problem that's resurfaced. Nothing new, just something they failed to solve with all the rules - The neutral zone trap is making a comeback.

I've watched a few boring as hell 2-1ish games already this season. The trap looks a little different now without the redline, but it's still mostly the same old 1-4 system we've come to know and "love". Mostly it's just set up a little further back in the neutral zone now, with an even less aggressive forecheck than before. (It still seems to work, although now that you're barely allowed to molest the puckhandler or his teammates, I figure a clever coach is soon going to figure out that you can beat the trap by getting your better players to just skate the puck through the neutral zone).

Here's a scary thought - I heard they're still seriously looking at that bonehead idea to widen and increase the heights of the nets.

Ok I see your point.

They are also shrinking the width of the goalie pads next year. That's why the ones on ebay that were 1500.00 last year are only like 200.00 now.

i think they are changing just the height of the pads. there will be a maximum depending on your height, so short goalies cant use the same size pads and 6'6" guys.
