just for fun, you have ten minutes to name ten sports that are played by teams of five or more players, professionally, somewhere in the world...most people cannot name six, in the ten minute time limit...try it on your friends.

hey, these are good!

The first guy to come up with water polo (and then polo) was pretty good, I had forgotten that one. I still don't necessarily buy crew, cause of no defense (in my personal definition of a 'sport'). I personally do not accept Track & Field because the nature of the game has no defense, and they are individual efforts, not team (please don't debate relays)...and I will respect your personal beliefs if it is your religion, but please, I do not count golf.

Oh, yeah, kudos to the guy that listed Team Handball, very big in Europe, and even an Olympic sport (please no diatribes on howcum lax isn't).

I gotta go hang a door at my mother's house, I'll be back later to critique these, and any others that crop up...be sure to run this at your friends, it's fun to see that they can't do it.

Help: what is difference between Union and League Rugby?
Taken from wikipedia's article on Rugby Union:

Rugby League and Rugby Union have diverged considerably over the years. Their main differences are the number of players per side (League has 13, Union 15), the scoring system, and the means of securing and retaining ball possession. In Union, both teams may contest possession at a tackle or set piece; in League one team retains possession for six tackles. The use of contested scrums and linesout in Rugby Union adds dramatically to the tactical variety of the modern game.

Hope that helps.

Excellent, I'll take it within that context. Otherwise, we'd get into an argument over what defense is in cycling...and I know there is some, at least tactically.

Where does "seven's" come into this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_Sevens

Apparently Sevens was put in for a bid for the 2012 London Summer Olympics, as an attempt to bring some form of Rugby back to the games and despite the dropping of a few sports (notably baseball) it seems unlikely to happen. Although the IRB's argument for Ruggers as the ideal olympic athelete per the official Olympci motto (Citius, Altius, Fortius (faster, higher, stronger)) over current event Rythmic Gymnastics for example.

...Sevens was put in for a bid for the 2012 London Summer Olympics...

I am fascinated by this! 15-minute games, so a team can play a lot of 'em in a single day or two! Cool! that's the "palooza" format we use locally for all kinds of sports tourneys:

Laxapalooza = lacrosse,
puckapalooza = inline hockey
socapalooza = indoor soccer
basapalooza, basketpalooza, volleypalooza, etc...

each game 10 minutes, each team plays a round robin set, and a ladder playoff, 5-8 games for each of five teams in a 6 hour time slot! works great...

Similar to football, but played with a small round ball and sticks. (Similar to field hockey sticks, but with indents so you can cradle the ball.

Gaelic football and Hurling are both big in Ireland, However they are not played proffesionaly, As the Irish belives this would ruin the tradition of the games.

And I would have said Aussie Rules football, as I know it is different than Rugby

And there is a much bigger difference between Rugby and Aussie Rules than there is between NFL and Arena Football.

correct...

and yes, arena and nfl are considered different...rugby and aussie rules are waaaaaay different.

Australian Rules is the oldest, and most free-form of all the football games in the world, by the way. The game is excellent, except that you need a humongous field and a ton of players to play it properly.

http://www.psptournaments.com/ then go to paintball tournaments.
There are many professional paintball leagues such as the NXL,PSP,NPPL,millenium series(EURO). Don't say that there is no defence becuase like in most leagues u have to keep the other team from eliminating all ur players and hanging ur flag. I have played in the PSP in Divison 3 and i have watched many NPPL tournaments, so don't tell me im making it up or i don't know anything about paintball. Also the NXL is much more Demanding on ur body than lacorsse. The games are an hour long with 2 minute brake times for filling and airing. and there is a half time. Also there are many types of penalties.

Very good with the CFL...I forgot that one...

I'm giving you eight...I haven't considered touch, but then I would also bow to someone who would tell me that Rugby 7's is separate (but they play with the same rules, eh?).

But, I am considering another variation of one of the recognized ones played in the U.S.

Yeah I wouldn't count Sevens as seperate it has almost exactly the same rules just with fewer players and shorter halves.

Aussielax, how do Gaelic and Aussie Rules football compare, I don't know that much about Gaelic...I would think it's closer to rugger than footy...

- Aussie Rules is played on a Big Oval Shape field similar in size to a cricket field
- Gaelic is played on a rectangle field similar in size to a Rugby pitch or a Gridiron

- Aussie Rules uses an oval shaped ball
- Gaelic uses a round ball like a soccer ball

- Aussie Rules has tackling/bumping/violence
- Gaelic does not

- Aussie Rules goalposts look like this...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/81/Scoring_in_aussie_rules.jpg
You get 6 points for a goal between the big posts, and 1 point for getting it between one of the big and the small posts
- Gaelic goals look like a cross between soccer posts and rugby posts. There is a Goalkeeper. You get 3 points for a goal in the net (under the crossbar), and 1 point for getting the ball over the crossbar

- Each have thier own rules resticted how the ball is handled and moved, read on wikipedia because it's pretty complicated to explain

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_rules_football
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaelic_Football

The AFL and GAA mix the rules and play a hybrid game. Although the Irish look like they don't want to do it next year

I said I was counting Gaelic anyway, sorry for the confusion...you're right, the specs of the question were vague and general...if you read shooter's info you get the Rugby's...again, all my opinion, but as an example, I consider Lacrosse, Box Lacrosse, and Indoor Lacrosse actually three different sports...but then, Shooter has convinced me that Rugby 7's is not different, so you're right, it's all how you look at it...

the AFL. the Australian Football League.

And I don't really understand the two rugby leagues. Is it kind of like MLL and NLL, same basic game with some slight, but at the same time major, differences?
One is called Rugby Union. The other is called Rugby League (actual sport name, not name of a league).

It's more like two very different games with some superficial similarities (can only throw backwards, is very rough, same offside rules, same goalposts)

But two completely different sports. Players either play one or the other, unlike Box/field lax or normal/arena football.

To simplify it the best I could say is that Rugby League is sort of halfway between Union and American Football.

Union is the most popular in just about every country in the world, except League is bigger in Australia and Northern England (but Union is still massive in Aus).

Read the wikipedia entrys on both because I could try to explain the differences to you (and they are huge differences) but you'd probably get lost and confused, if you aren't already.

Rugby Union
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union
- 15 players
- rucks and mauls
- 5 point trys (kinda like a touchdown), 2 pnt conversions (extra point), 3 pnt penalties (umm, no equivalent in your football), 3 pnt drop goals (field goals
- bigger field
- play for territory
- complicated kicking rules and tactics, with field markings like the 22 and 10

Rugby League
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_League
- 13 players
- sets of 6 (kinda like "downs")
- 4 point trys , 2 pnt conversions, 2 pnt penalties, 1 pnt drop goals
- smaller field
- play for possesion
- Different kicking/touch rules, usually only kick when you reach your sixth tackle
