I was at a D1 game last year and the middie wound up and acted like he took a full over hand shot and started walking away as if he missed the net... the attackman at X took off running towards the end line and the goalie followed... the middie then shot and scored.

since then i have tried to do that fake shot... i can do the side arm fake but so can my 4 year old cousin... how is the full overhand fake shot done? is it my mesh or is it the simple fact that i am not rolling my wrists properly???

i did it once by accident but i was using a traditionally strung pocket that had so much whip in it that i could throw the stick across the field and the ball would never move...

any suggestions, directions or tips would be greatly appreciated...

probably just "cradle" parallel to the plane in which youre faking while you swing

you will probley need to tighten your shooters a lot. If you want to be able to fake a full speed shot you need the right techniqc(which you probley have from practicing so much), and the right amount of whip.

It is really un practical to have your stick with thaat much whip(unless you are used to it)

you can achieve this with little or no whip.. you can either bunch up your shooters near the scoop.. do not leave a gap between the scoop and your first row of shooting string.. from there put 4 or five more directly below all touching eachother.

try that or you could string a pocket in the middle of your head with 4 shooters with one gap between them.. all the shooters loose.

Or you could turn your stick at the right time before te apex of your motion. It's called a quarter turn fake. Watch some Marechek vids/games, he does it all the time. Get your top hand ot twist at exactly the right time.

i think he's talking about a full wind up, and a full follow through fake the quarter turn fake is used primarily when in close proximity to the goal

The same principles apply. I do the fake shot wind up all the time, you have to get your hands right and turn the stick at just the right point. Technically its not really a quarter turn fake, but if you wind up enough and then turn in as you shoot it still works. I don't think shooter have that much to do with it if you use the right technique. You have to have a little whip, or the ball will fly right up into the air. Also, take a 3/4 arc so you can mask the turning of the stick and have the ball pull into the mesh. You would have to use a half turn for an overhand shot, and that's pretty easy to read.

i try to turn the head but the ball usually rolls out... i can do the move if i bring my arms in but i look a little "dee dee dee" like and not very effective. the guy i watched do this took two big steps, stick way back and it really looked like he took a shot... i was sitting behind the net when he did it and i was looking for the ball as well..

Try choking up on the stick with your top hand just a bit. You get a better feel for the ball and can adjust to it in your motion. Keep practicing, use a mirror to make it look the way you want and et the motion down, then do it with a soft/tennis ball, practice some more and the use a rela ball. You'll be throwing great fakes in no time.

when i throw my fakes, i use my bottom hand to "turn" the head...which is better, top or bottom? or does it not matter

you have to be able to use both your top and bottom hand in conjunction(i think thats the right word to use) to throw a legit fake, you should also be trying to incorporate your head and shoulder was well but i think you and the original thread starter are talking about two different kinds of fakes

I think faking with the ball has a lot to do with the pocket if you wanna throw a sick fake. you have to have some grip to the ball. Like my pocket is deep and i have 4 shooting strings that help alot and i mainly just turn my top hand to fake it

soo is it kind of like he took a shot and followed all the way through but the ball was still in his stick??

i think i do that pretty well, and i dont have much whip at all its all form. you need to time the turn at the right time and turn your top hand towards you... like shifty said its the same principals as the quarter fake

its basically like he took a full shot from the top of the key with the ball glued to his stick...
i try rolling my wrists towards me but all that happens is that goes straight into the ground... never sticks...

i love this fake is great to mess with people when youre playing catch. i jus roll my bottom hand when i get to the point where i think the ball would come out. its not that hard its just timing. you can also get a really good fake to behind the back pass from it i do it all the time in my indoor league. my stick has absolutely no whip in it either, just a really good channel.

this is the only time i have seen it... just take a shot with out a ball in it... really wind up... thats what it looks like.... but the guy still had the ball in his head

alright i got it, its one of the drills Millon shows in Offensive Wizardry its when you bring your elbow over your head for the shot then you rotate your top hand so when you follow through the ball will still be in your stick , it'll take some practice but its easy enough
