well, here it is. im guessing this is where all the touch screen technology was applied. it essentially is the ipod that all the rumors have been about, but with obviousl a phone and the usual PDA functions. interesting.

Its an awesome phone, dont get me wrong, but its going to be bought by so many people that dont actually need it...
its so true, and considering its a PDA, it makes it even worse.

$499 with a 2 years contract!!!
No thanks to that. I have a iPod and I have a phone, and thats all I need.
I wonder what spoiled kid will get it first.
I doubt any kid will actually take full advantage of the phone, like cool it is a PDA that is very sleek. But for a Phone that costs as much as a PS3 thats just to much.

what really bothers me is you need to stay with the same phone on a plan for two years, unless you want to pay outrageous amounts of money to simply just buy a phone without the plan for the company, say verizon. I know personally that I'd spend a lot more money buying new phones with better features than just buying a new phone every two years. I personally think the cell phone business needs to rethink this and allow people to upgrade phones whenever they want, dont you?

exactly. new phones are coming out all the time and people arent gunna want to get them if they have to wait say another year when a whole new group of phones will already be out. and i hate how certain phones only work with certain companies intially. it drives me crazy and it seems to me that it would only limit sales of the phone. what they should do is 1. make the phones cheaper to begin with 2. make phones universal and 3. make it so you can upgrade whenever....im thinking an email to the cell phone companies would be in order...

well verizon/sprint are on a different type of network than att tmobile and cingular.
verizon and sprint you can upgrade whenever you just need to set it up online and buy the abut 300 phone...on cingular/tmobile you can just get the phone and pu your sim card in it...i think.verizon/sprint are cdma and the others are gsm.

ugghhh i had to wait forever to get my chocolate...down to around two months though, i agree with you. I think the iphone is ugly and will have huge screen scrathes and smudges..cool idea though.
You have to protect the screen just like you did on the video iPods. They have those invisible shield things that work beautifully.
WHY THIS IS WORTH THE MONEY:
Normal PDAs don't have video playback. Normal PDAs (excluding basically the Blackberry) don't have phone capabilities. Normal PDAs don't have quality music playback. Normal PDAs require a stylus. Have you guys checked out what this thing can do? You can do so many things while you're on the phone even, and it's intuitive instead of ludicrous. Like, my phone, it sucks. People paid $500 for the first 40 gig iPods like 3 years ago. All it did was play music. It had a black and white screen. Now, people are complaining about paying for the iPhone, with its numerous capabilities. It's like a mini laptop that you can use to talk on the phone. It's a much more capable and portable PSP. I mean, this is brilliant. Will it kill the iPod? No way. I wouldn't buy one of these, but for people that want it, it's a worthy investment. I like the use of the flash drive on this. I mean, I'd wait until they got like, the 16 gig flash drives just because I'd use mine for music. But I like my tiny little phone (Nokia 2600) that was only $50 without any sort of plan or contract, and my simple refurbished iPod, $170. I mean, those are steals anyway, but for my brother, or tech people like him, this is brilliant.

For all of you saying that they need to remarket the cell phone industry:
It will A. Never happen and B. Is not plausible. For the phones to be universal they will all have to be on the same frequency and all that junk, which would destroy the old phones that used the old frequencies. Also, when you choose a service provider the three things you look at are phones avaible, service area, and price. Now, essentially, the prices and service areas are generally the same, give or take. But the phones is where companies really draw people in. People see all these great phones at great prices, don't worry about the contracts, sign away and end up paying for it the next couple years.
Alot of people want it to happen but it never will because of simple ecomonics. Also I think that the service provides pay a fee to use a certian phone., I'm not sure on that though so don't quote me.

thats not overpriced. think about a nano, a cell phone, and a computer all in one.
I just talked to my brother, who is a global supply manager for apple. This phone has been his project for the past year and he has not whispered a word about it until today. The phone is only available on cingular because, in order for all of the features to be enabled, the network needs to activate certain things (I say things because I'm not actually sure what they are). Anyway, for the iPhone designers etc., it is far easier to work with one network to make the phone compatible than work with all of them at once. This is not to say the phone won't be available on other networks later.

It may be worth the money, but will people buy it for that much....
The thing with this market is that it basically eliminated the tween/younger kids market base because no parent is going to let their 8th grader get a $600 phone (apart from the rich spoiled kids).
Ipod mini's were Apple's best selling ipod for a long time for that reason: it's small, and its affordable for a lot of people. Upgrading to a normal ipod for 50 more bucks is much better, but the mini still outsold the normal ipods by a considerable margin.
$600? Sure, may be worth it. But unless the price goes down, I don't think it will be as popular as the mini's or nano's have been.

Also, the phone is only pre-order now. it doesn't actually come out until june...

Did you both to finish reading my post? Not initially, but potentially in the future. As for increasing the size, it will likely happen eventually, but most likely not in the near future - give the phone time to give its proverbial feet wet before they start improving on it.
An interesting side note: IF ipods were to continue at the current rate of decreasing the physical size of hard/flash drive while maintaining the storage capacity, in 11 years the ipod will be invisible. Obviously, that's not going to happen (nor would it be useful), but it's still pretty cool.

ok here's the real question. When does apple release the same product but minus the phone and plus a lot more storage. Im thinking that's going to be the next ipod, because they know that the market for this is probably going to be pretty small, people arn't going to get out of their cell phone contracts just to get a really cool phone. Im gonna say that in July (next WWDC) apple releases the next true ipod which will, as i said before, be essentialy the same with wi-fi and such, but with no phone, and using that extra space for a butt load of extra storage.

yea i really like the whole concept, but it is deffinatly lacking in the storage department. i think the one they were using for the demo was hook to an external hard drice though, i mean did you see all the artists, the albums, the songs, and the video, plus all your contacts and things of that sort. i mean that alone should be more than 4gb, but who knows maybe they condensed everything.
but i think i will just wait for the next new iPod though cuz i dont wanna switch carriers just to get the phone.

im going back to what i said before, the real killer for this phone is going to be the price of the plan. Unless of course apple puts together a sweet deal with cingular. If you look at it, the least expensive plan for talking is 450 minutes which is like $45 a month, then you add on the least amount of texting which is 200 texts a month for $5, then you put on the (this is the blackberry version) unlimited email/ internet is another $45 a month, then you get gps service thts another $15 a month. So far that comes to $110 your paying a month. So unless apple works out something were you don't have to pay much or anything for the data, and the google maps GPS stuff is free, that could be the killer.
