no whip, somewhat long shaft, arm muscles. do it in practice, do it in your free time.

make sure your holding the stick at the lower part of the shaft... also, try throwing sidearm, thats how i make my really long passes (to the other goalie)

build up wrist strength

Its a good way to build up your arm strenth and improve your throwing but its not realistic, i mean it depends on your defense, etc. but i rarely throw the ball past midline...its always to my dmen that break out.

i can throw about the whole field and make sure u have urhands all the way down the shaft u might try sidearm.-that works better for some goalies.

i'm a girl, so i never throw the whole field, but i can make it to the restraining line on the end no prob and i have an attack shaft... so length doesn't matter at all: it's all in the arms, though throwing sidearm helps a ton

i can hit an attackman cutting to the goal.

I don't think anybody mentioned that it has alot to do with his pocket....if its a bag your not gunna be able to throw any kind of distance!:agree

wayne is correct about that. the tradeoff in a goalie stick is a big bag gets a lot of rebounds, but a tighter pocket will make for better outlet and clearing passes.

as for wrist/finger strength, that is one of the MOST important things you need as a goalie. go to an outdoor store and check out the stuff rock climbers use for strengthening their hands. i use a huge ball of silly putty to strengthen my fingers

also, make sure your throwing motion is solid. i had the same problem and tried all this stuff. try throwing with your offhand and just work fundamentals. if that doesnt work try having someone that doesnt play goal look at your pocket (its a fresh set of eyes looking at the problem).

side arming is impressive but what happens when you dont have room or are offhand? are you going to count on an interference call all the time and risk goals just because you can't launch it overhand?

i was told never to use sidearm as it decreases accuracy....

i use this for wrist and finger strength

as spenny said, wrist+finger strength is really important, within a week or so the stick feels lighter and easier to cradle one handed when doing the "statue of liberty" run
