View Full Version : Stutter step?

Has anyone found it useful? I myself have tried it many times, but it tends to let the defender get more oriented with you and slows you down. A change of pace is good but the stutter step seems to disrupt the whole dodge itself. I have to end up cutting and cutting until i can get around him or find an open pass/shot.

Anyone have any comments on stutter stepping?

Thanks.

i stutter step almost everytime i dodge and it really helps me. i play iso middie so i dodge alot, and its good to do the stutter, and then once you start going one way, do a hitch and cut back and forth.

I like it. I can sprint onto offense and then slow down before you get to the defense. which is good becuase then you can explode after the dodge

Maybe you're not stuttering to a point which the defender would react.

when used properly, i've seen the stutter step literally break a guy's ankle. If you don't know how and when to use it, you'll get rocked by the defender.

The moral of this story? Practice it over, and over, and over...in the house, in front of mirrors, randomly, whenever. Make sure you're good at it.

Also, watch video of it and how it's used.

a well executed stutter step is to make it so the defender has a hard time predicting your change of direction in a dodge

its works really well before a split dodge because your slowing down it helps with the fake out

does anyone have a video of a stutter step done correctly? or any form of split dodge, or fake, done correctly?

Watch some of Mikey Powell's old videos. It was very effective for him. One has him doing it twice and his defender tripped over himself in back of the net.

football players like Reggie Bush and any other star you can think of also stutter step ,its all in the first step and how well you can sell it if you cant sell it your defenders not going to bite also throw your head and shoulders into the mix

Stutter so his numbers face the opposite direction of the way you want to go. Not sure if that made any sense, but what the hell

A studder step is good to some extent but if you do so much of a studder that you stop all of your forward progress the defended will be able to cover you much easier. Look at it this way if you are running at the defender and he is standing still you already have an advantage. if you do so much of a studder that you slow down to his speed it will allow him to recover and guard you. Also if your a middie you dont want to be continually dodging if your first dodge doesnt work simple pull it back out and give the ball up to your next team mate. Not every dodge is meant to be scored. You just may want to get your hands free so you are able to pass it on. My point is dont slow down to much when you are aproaching the defender or you will be easier to defend.

Its all preference really. Some of the best high school dodgers i've ever seen stutter-step when they dodge, but I know plenty good dodgers who just plant and explode. I once saw a guy stutterstep for literally four straight seconds (count that out in your head) before he split, and he still made his defender look dumb. Of course that guy is getting a full-ride to Maryland...but it can work.

I Probably shouldn't be giving out my secrets, but here it goes... ;-)

It depends on what I'm doing, I always stutter before a face - I find it to be more effective... I find that just planting and exploding out of a split is more effective... At least in my opinion...

Like GBaschski said, it's all preference.

Make sure you get the shoulder moving too. If the person isnt that good then your going to sell it but like a certain artist said, hips dont lie.

the point of the stutter step isnt really to fake out your defender, it's just to prevent them from having any idea which direction you are going. Stutter steps are best used right before a big fake, so....stutter step for a few seconds, then take a huge step in one direction, then explode the opposite. The best dodgers in the game are masters at this.

I dont wanna give up the secret to my splitdodge success, but whatever. When im goin into a split, about 5 ft. from the defender, i take a step to the side im splitting (like a face dodge basically), then the other way, then split the guy. If you make a really good first step face, you can then easily get them to turn their hips, then split them the other way. I believe its called a triangle split. Works every single time AS LONG AS the first step is strong. good luck!
