haha.. Well.. Think of it this way, you're selling yourself to the college.. You don't want to show him (hopefully not true) you can't hold on to the ball under pressure, or the little things.. Many people like editing their "nice" plays such as goals, assists, good defense, saves, faceoffs... ect.. Some coaches prefer full gametape (your best half) to see how you do in field play. Truthfully I don't think they will be watching the game all the way through so send them what they will like. It would be also worthy to submit a "questionare" type paper which includes statistics for the season, (goals, asst. %'s ) 40 time anything exceptional about your athleticism. Also if there is anything add some academic info too they like to see both sides of the spectrum.

Dont make any highlight tapes. This cant be stressed enough. I also would not edit your tapes as said above. Coaches just want raw game footage to see how you act the whole game...they dont want something that looks peiced together that could potentially have taken out a bad play you made.

Also include a letter to the coach. Include your stats but also talk about what you feel your strengths on the field are. Talk about why you are interested in his program (So yes you will have to write multiple letters) and why you want to go to that school. Also send your academic info as well..GPA.ACT..SAT whatever.

As far as how much footage...I would probably send 2 games to each coach.

Make sure you some how let them know who you are on the film. So if you have anything that sticks out, point that out to them, along with your number and team colors, so they can recognize you. The worst thing could be them not knowing who they're watching (especially if it's a whole game) and they end up recruiting someone else. Also, I would first just email the coach and see what he wants. I know some didn't even want a tape of me, they wanted to see me in person. Some wanted to see certain things, so it's easier if you have a few games, and then cater to the coach's needs.

what i did, was i made a highlight tape from my high school team (all the good stuff) and then included full game tapes from my summer teams.

so whichever way the coach likes his films, he gets both, and if you dont do so well in parts of the fullgame, the highlight tapes helps out a little bit more

on the highlight tape i also introduced myself beforehand and stated my number for all the teams and also colors (so theyre looking at the right guys... duhh)

hclax14 i think coaches only wants to see you in spring playing with your high school team no highlight tapes no summer tapes with games with kids goofing off and throwing behind the back passes and throwing one handed butt end checks...listen to eclipse he plays in college and knows what he talking about...

Whatt? Coaches will watch you play against any competition at any time of the year. The better competition, no matter when, helps you out. I know that I played more challenging teams during the summer, and it was probably more serious, than any time of the year (probably true for most people if you're actually trying in the summer). We had a good time, my summer team, but usually you're on a summer team and everyone wants to do well so they will be seen, so you really don't see goofing off during games.

My main game for my tape was something not having to do with HS team at all. I did just fine, in fact, I'm willing to bet that game is what got on the radar screen of many coaches.

Moral of the story, send in a tape with high quality competition. If you have summer footage that is good, use it. Coaches want to see you play your best against the best.

Coaches dont want highlight tapes. This cannot be stressed enough. Anyone can make a video of themselves scoring over and over again. This doesnt show coaches anything. Just send full game films..its easier for you anyway.

I like the second one where it shows opponents and stuff and everything but the tape seems really long to me if i were you guys id show a 5 min but full of likle really important stuff but thats just me and if its a big game maybe show the clock and the play coming up so if you were goalie have ur dad film the clock then they can see the huge saves in OT.

I did this, kind of. Basically I had a whole video of game and put it up on google video (had to break it up though because of length). When I sent out emails to coaches, I sent a link to a webpage that had links to each clip and discriptions next to them to explain who scored, if I saved any etc. I also had a little IP checker thing so I could see who visited, which was rather cool to watch and see which coaches actually looked at it.

Anyways, the video wasn't the best quality when put online, so it gave coaches an idea of my talent, but then some also asked to see the actual tape, so they could get the quality and focus on the details. I think it helped to some extent, but really, I think coaches are going to want to have a tape in hand if possible.

NOT TRUE, coaches like to see highlate tapes. What most coaches want is a good 15-20 highlate then a good half of a game on there.

Really..because from the good 20+ D1, D2 and D3 coaches I talked to they thought highlight tapes were childish and pointless. I mean honestly..If I only score 10 goals in a season..its pretty easy for me to put all ten of them on one highlight tape and make me like amazing. And did it ever occur to any of you on here that coaches dont want to see you just score goals? Do you not understand coaches want to see off ball movement? Cuts? Rides? Defense? Holy cow!

Highlight tapes arent bad as long as they are sent with a solid 1-2 FULL GAMES. Not a half of lacrosse.

from the coaches i've talked to they specifically said "do not send full games". they want a short 5minute video which highlights everything great about you, not just goals. Do you guys honestly think coaches have time to watch 30minutes of every prospects game that sends a tape.

It really, really, depends on the coach, as I've been stressing. I was recruited by many schools, some were extremely elite in lacrosse (top 5 D1), and some not so much (lower D3). Every coach has a preference of what they want to see. Some ask for only 5 minutes, others want halves, some want full games. Coaches have good instincts though, they'll watch a few minutes (if that) of the tape you send them and if they like it, they'll continue watching and evaluating. If they can't stand it, they have no problem chucking it into the trashcan. Of the coaches I talked to over the past year(s), all of them pretty much stated they new right away whether they wanted to continue watching or not, so it's not like every prospect's tape is going to be seen for 30 minutes, most will be lucky to be seen for 5.

Like I said before, I sent my video online (a full game), but I broke it up and had captions next to each clip. I think every coach I sent it to who watched it, responded that they liked it alot (some did want to see more resolution) though it certainly wasn't five minutes or just clips of my good points.

Yes some coaches do. Some coaches do not want to give out scholarships based on a 5 minute highlight tape they got with P-Diddy playing in the backround. Some coaches will sit down and watch a good 60 minutes of your game..and then even watch another. This way they can be sure of who they are giving out roster spots..and the schools money too.

I can honestly tell you if I was a coach..and I got a highlight tape...I would be sure the person sent me a full game film before I even considered putting them on my roster. I want to see how they act in every situation they are put in.

And yea..most coaches do watch 60 minutes of lax every time they go to watch someone play in person...so what difference is it if you live across the country and they watch it in a TV instead?

actually, they do like to see highlight videos, i have friends who sent highlight videos and have now been recruited by north carolina, one now plays for syracuse, one is going to georgetown, and one is in the process of going to maryland. a highlight video is not just goal after goal. you have to show GB's, hits, rides, ON net shots (might not be a goal), assists etc. then its smart to include full games on the DVD too. you might "talk to 20+ D1 coaches" or whatever, but some of my best friends have successfully been recruited USING highlight videos. so i know what im talking about.

is it ok to cut out the parts of the tape that you're not in. I play D and if the ball is on the offensive side for a while, should I cut it out?

YOUR FRIENDS got recruited by using highlight films, ECLIPSE HIMSELF got recruited with game film. You may "know what you are talking about" but you are a much less credible source than Eclipse who ACTUALLY PLAYS FOR AN NCAA TEAM AFTER SENDING IN GAME FILM

The fact that he plays mediocre D3 makes him an authority?

Not a knock at you Eclipse, but there are always two sides to the coin. You're best off asking the coach what they want, or including both.

It's long overdue to be said. One person is not completely right, all the time. Just because he got recruited off of something doesn't mean it works for everything. The bottomline is, ask the coach or include both.

Exactly. Some of the coaches I was recruited by didn't even want a tape. I would suggest making contact with the coach first, and then if one asks for a tape, you can cater to his needs. Every coach is different in how they recruit, so there is no one solid answer to what kind of video you should send.

So I've read a bunch of this and I think that maybe two possible plans sound good...

1) Ask the coach what he wants?
and
2) Send like a 5 minute or so highlight video and then have a half or full game tape if they want to watch more?
