I was wondering does playing with a short stick benifit player that use a long pole at all? Or should all us D-man stick to the big sticks?

Not using a long pole is a 3-foot disadvantage, Using a shorty is great for mid and attack but when the defensemens goal is to not let the attackmen by having 3 extra feet of range helps with getting pressure on a guy from farther back, more response time if you miss a check you have around 5 feet to respond oppose to a shorty if you make a move your semi burned

I think he means at home, playing catch, etc.

thats embarassing

But on that note it would be another disadvantage, using a short stick would get you acustomed to the short stick throwing catching and cradling over all it's better to use a d-pole and get to know your stick better

well playing short stick D is a lot harder then playing regular longstick D, you have to focus on your footwork and body positioning all the time so its definitely helpful and wont hurt your game at all

Alright last post but I agree with MakiMaki I forgot about footwork and body postioning on that side it will help but stick skills and passing probally won't do you any good

that is true switching from longsticks to shorts sticks and back passing and protecting your stick are very different

you could try practicing without a stick period like try getting a buddy and practice positioning and footwork and such

I think its a definite good thing, i play defense but always mess around with short sticks by playing with a short stick u kinda see what its like to be an attackmen and can predict the moves they make better

i have found that when i mess aroudn with a shorty it helps my stick skills, and it also makes me less dependent on the length of the stick. In summer leagues i play with a shortie, just so that my stick skills become better, it has definetely helped me a lot.

Its always been the opposite for me..using my pole and then switching to shorty has always helped my short stick skills. But I used to use short stick D all the time (not middie or anything) and I learned alot about positioning and ground balls.

I fool around with shorty's most of the time inside. I think it makes my stick skills that much better.

A few times at practice we used use "stubbs." They're basically foot an half handles, so we couldn't throw checks but it helped with us pushing out, footwork, body position, etc. Very benefiting so you don't use that six foot pole as a crutch.
