Hey, i know lax is the big thing in the east and has started to catch on in the rest of the country but i want some opinions. I live in a suburb of chicago and all of the schools in my district now have teams but we're one of the few.
Do you think that lax will catch on as big as football and baseball in main stream middle america?
Thanxs

Well, it's bigger in the midwest than the west as far as I know. The only reason there's a girl's lacrosse team at my school is because a girl from Chicago moved here and helped form it this year. I think she actually helped them have a decent season too, I was paying attention to the guys more than the girls though (if you didn't catch on I didn't play during the season).

yea id say its getting pretty big out here, at least near chicago i dont know about south. obviously new trier, loyola and lake forest are amazing (at least for girls) but at libertyville, we had frosh, JV and varsity levels for girls and had a record 70 girls try out! and for the first time in the history of the lville girls lax program, a girl actually is going to a D1 or D1A school on a lx scholarship. as for guys, we finished 2nd in state, woot woot~! and this guy who graduated like 2 years ago (steven brooks) now plays at syracuse. so yea id definately say that its gettin bigger and bigger. i dont know if itll go as mainstream as baseball or anything like that but the popularity is definately growin. i just hope it grows enough to put an NLL or MLL team in chicago

I think it's gettin a lot more popular here in Indy. Anytime I show my sticks to one of my friends they wanna play. A lacrosse article made the front page of our county newspaper a few days ago.

has anyone heard anything about any MLL or NLL teams coming to the midwest at all? or more specifically, coming to chicago?

GCHSLax04
07-08-2004, 08:57 PM
unfortunately no, but that would be awesome, maybe if we all harassed the M/NLL they would feel pressured to bring a team to chicago...So lets all dress up like pirates and storm their HQ

not in texas

football and basketball are still king and itll probably stay that way for a while

07-08-2004, 09:25 PM
that can change...

so let's make a deal, the first person from Tx who plays lax to win the lotto goes out and spends 9/10's of it on lax stuff and then gives it to the poor. then we split whats left 50/50 since i gave you the idea.

GCHSLax04
07-08-2004, 09:45 PM
I like how you think V, as long as im not the one who wins i'll make that deal with anyone who wins it in illinois.

it is spreading everywhere
in ohio it is growing all the time

but whoever said anything about the olympics
that is so far from happening
the only 2 places in the world where it is even decent sized is canada and america
sure mayb a little bit of australia and some others
but it is no where near the amount of countries needed to be in the olympics

i find it funny the word is french and yet they don't really play as far as i know...
Pop quiz, who here knows the origin of the name lacrosse?

Laxergirl
07-08-2004, 11:41 PM
well, being partly native american myself (woot!) i believe the word for lacrosse is "Baggataway" or "tewaraathon" named by the Iroquois. i guess thats where that trophy came from for all you college lax fans out there. Cherokees (that would be the tribe i have blood from) called it "little brother of war". im no expert, but this is the extent of my knowledge and understanding on the history of lacrosse. if im wrong, please feel free to correct me (no flaming, please)

GCHSLax04
07-08-2004, 11:59 PM
well you gave a brilliant lax history i suppose ( i wouldnt know im a carib islander) but i was asking on the WORD :laugh , well i guess i'll just say, the word is FRENCH, and literally means the crosse, due to the similarities to the bishops crosse and original lacrosse sticks. That may be debatable, as is everything, but thats is what history has taught me

Its growing like wildfire here in Aus. Thin is we have the number of players were some clubs have way too many and some have just enough which mean if they merged teams theyd have to many players

That's pretty much correct. "the French settlers on seeing the Native Americans using the stick called it la crossier (crozier) hence the name "Lacrosse". Crozier= bishops cross = (looks like a shepherd's hook).... as GCHS said.

funny how the canadians had banned lax for a fair time until the lax underground was noticed and thrilled the next generation... then say they are better at lax. ;) and for those who don't know why it was banned... well... indians attached weights to their sticks to use them as skull crushers...

fun game huh? ;)

In the midwest (at least around chicago) it has took off like fire. There are handfulls of schools each year starting a program. There is supposed to be like 10 new teams next year and by my junior year, 2006 it should be a state recognized sport.
I had messed arond in maryland a little bit and moved to lake zurich when i was like 6 . so i always had a old hi-wall in my garage that every now and then i took out and played around with it. Other than that i hadnt heard anything of lacrosse untill 2 or 3 years ago when i heard lz and osme others sayin how they played lacrosse so i joined up and it seems since then it has been getting bigger and bigger. I think that it could possibly become a "mainstream sport" up there with the americas sports. I think that if it happens it wont be for 20-30 years for it to experiance "complete" acceptness from everyone and be at the level of baseball or basketball. it could be longer. All i know is it has exploded over in the burbs of chicago and hope to c it grow some more. Maybe one day we could be as good as loyola or new trier.

me and lz lax know all about histroy thanks to the worst ref ever who told us the story of lacrosse before a game druing the line up.

GCHSLax04
07-10-2004, 01:34 PM
haha, we had a ref tell us about he ref'd the world games in aussie and to watch for teams coming out with wooden shafts, cause they were lookin to break heads, and sure enough the iriqui(sp from hell) team all came out with wood (haha) and the ref wouldnt let the game start till they had some normal ones.

One ref we had was officially blind in his left eye deaf in his right ear and had aweful arthritis, needless to say the game he reffed for us, was the last before he retired

yeah i think by something like 2008 there looking to have added 6 more teams

It seems that the chances of expansion to chicago or the midwest is more likely to happen in the form of a NLL team. It seems that the MLL is lookin to expand to the far west and then maybe put a few teams in the middle. i found a few quotes of hooligan who knows what he is talking about.

sources have said that the NLL is delaying so that any NHL owners interested in collecting up an NLL franchise to weather the strike, can have more time. So far, several cities have been passed around, in addition to the "sure thing" cities already believed to be set in stone for 2005.

In addition to Atlanta and New York (returning as the Saints), it is believed that Miami, Dallas, and Minnesota are the front runners. Also, that list could include the previously thought to be abandoned idea of Hartford. All 4 of those cities would have an owner with some sort of ties to the NHL.

Of course, this could be causing some tension in the inner workings of the front office. Hopefully Fox SportsNet has been kept abreast of what is going on, because any sort of miscommunication there could cause some upheaval within the NLL and its TV deal.

This one is from a thread about expansion coming to chicago.

Chicago is definitely on the list of cities hoping for a team in 2005. Sources say that the Chicago Bulls and White Sox are partnering up on an effort to buy an NLL team. The NLL has them on the list with several other cities. My site reporters are working on compiling the information we were dealt, and putting it up. Once we have our "ducks in a row", I'll broadcast the other cities here.

I would think if the MLL did to expand in the midwest that it would be part of there second phase of expansion. Who knows though, hopefully we will have a team in chi town in the future.

Does anyone know about camps in our area? (im more asking the LZ players i know are here, but if anyone knows...)

Just readin that post about expansions, if we did get an NLL team, would we still get somewhat the same experience as going to a MLL game? (vendors, booths stuff like that)

what kind of camp u lookin at? like a day camp or overnight. Most of the closer overnight camps are done. Lacrosse America is always running something. I heard there was a summer league in libertyville run by them, but im not sure if it is too late. just check out www.lacrosseamerica.com it should have loads of camps and other clinics and things.

LaxGoalieLZ

Yeah we are doing libertyville indoor, gonna wreck some havoc. We just mess around though, this year we are using woodies and maybe even a powermaster or two. Gonna be some broken bones this year.

For camps i cant think of any really good local ones that havnt already happened. I heard excell and ultimate were good but im not sure if there over or not.

GCHSLax04
07-10-2004, 06:49 PM
haha thats cool, im doin Lville indoor as well, can you actually use woodies and powermasters? thats pretty sick... is there a rulebook i can peek at anywhere online? The way this is goin i'd be tempted to fill my shafts with sand...

i dont know if it will ever overtake football or basketball, but it is growing like mad here in michigan. i think there were something like 12 new teams last year and there will be more next year.

michigan is finally taking steps for it to become a h.s. varsity sport.

GCHSLax04
07-10-2004, 07:20 PM
this was our varsitys first year and we won our "first-year" varsity state championship, we are losing some of our better guys however, and the JV team wasnt anything too special

LaxGoalieLZ
07-11-2004, 07:08 PM
Power masters are illegal im almost possotive but we are just gonna scratch out the name and still use them. Woodies are perfectly legal 10 years ago it was wood or aluminum.

And your frosh/soph team sucked we beat them 2-1 in OT(really low scorin) , it was also our only win.

GCHSLax04
07-11-2004, 07:20 PM
yea we did suck, i'll admit it, i wasnt there when we played your however, (broken hand) i doubt i could have made much of a diff though
