View Full Version : Should I cut down my goalie-length? Help please
Hey, I have a full (goalie) length shaft.. a Brine F-15.. I'm a small person, I'm 5'6" and weigh aobut 116 lbs. .. so I mean I'm pretty small .. I was wondering if I should cut down my goalie-length shaft.. and by how much? I don't like using attack length, because I have better clears and throwing with the longer one.. Attack is too short.. I like goalie length, but I was wondering if it'd be better if I cut it down?

The only shaft lengths ive really played with are the goalie length, a shorty, and a goalie shaft cut down 5".
I liked the 35" shaft, it gave me enough control like a shorty but it handled like a goalie shaft
depends on what you want, more control than short, if you still want better clears, then stay goalie length.

Use whatever doesn't get in your way. If you go to make a low off stick side save and the butt end gets caught up in between your legs or sumthin then you need to cut it down. But if you have a wide range of movement with any length then it just becomes preference. A long stick lets you throw farther but can hinder your movement or be a detriment if you come out of the net.

i cut all of mine down about 4-5 inches, its the best feeling in my opinion.

36"
which is 4" off a goalie shaft for those not math inclined.

I cut about 5" off mine and i love it. I am planning to get the cut off part signed by some goalie or other...

i use an attack length (cause those are the rules for girls), but i also played illegally with a goalie shaft for a half a season, and my clears weren't affected at all, I even had more handling with the attack length, so i'd go with that.
but it is really whatever feels comfortable, so whatever you end up doing, good luck. you might want to try both, borrow a friends attack shaft and bolt it on to your stick, just to see what it feels like before cutting it down.

unless you are getting the stick tangled in your legs or the net, i wouldnt cut your shaft, you can use the extra length for picking cross-crease passes off, and it probably helps you in making long passes

i used to cut my down a ton, to the length of like only 4 inches longer then an attack shaft. Then i switched back and it helped my clearing a ton.
You see a lot more goalies at all levels playing with a shorter shaft than the 40" normal. I personally cut my shaft down 5" and play with a 35" shaft and it makes the world of difference for me. There are no risks as far as I am concerned, just a lot of benefits. It's easier to maneuver because it's shorter which also increases your hand speed; plus it's easier to handle when you're out of the cage. How short you choose to cut the shaft is up to you, I recommend trying different lengths with an aluminum shaft and once you find the length that feels right then cut down the shaft on your number one stick.
