speaking of tryouts . Can anyone tell me how long you should have played to even consider to tryout for national teams (germany as an example) or how does that work in general .

In the past, there were some 17 year olds that made it and most of them had just a few years experience. There are two key things: are you good enough and are you a passport holder or not. If you are not a passport holder, you have to live there a certain maount of time (the ILF site has all the rules) or have been born there or have a parent who was born there. Even then, most teams (like Germany) can have a maximum of four players who are not passport holders. As a very rough guess, I'd say most of the current national team players who have passports have five or more years of experience, with many having some experience in US high schools and/or colleges and the non-passport holders played in US college programs.
