I was looking into geting a set of dumbells for my home so I could workout without getting to the gym. What weights (how heavy) would you all recomend.

why not get a bench and then one of those huge bars that cost like 100$ with like 200lbs worth of weights, that way all you have to do is get yourself a those small dumbells bars that you can add weigh too and you can do a wide variety of exercises

And where would I find one of those?

depends on if you lift at all but if you want to be able to do some lifting from home I recommend getting a bench along with your dumbbells. I haven't tried them, but the bow flex auto changing weight set or something similar would be cool.
Otherwise I suggest getting weights from 15 all the way to 45 pounds to start out. You can work on arms, do bench presses(incline decline regular). dumbbell flies, etc. you can also do a few leg exercises like calf raises or some front squats if you wanted. Basically you can work most of your muscles from home, if not all, but I am sure you know this : )

you don't need a bar, you can just use dumbbells. I actually have a bar and no dumbbells and it sucks.
Definitely go for dumbbells and a bench, you don't need a bar since you can do all the same exercises with dumbbells and it helps your coordination and you won't just use one side of your body to lift.

well true you dont need a bar, unless he starts power cleaning and squatting but thats a lil bit farther down the road
but i was thinking along the lines of the bars that come with a variety of weights

you can clean and squat with dumbbells, and while harder, it helps you to gain balance and coordination.
but yes a bar with a bunch of weights never hurts, but just requires more room and is A LOT more dangerous to self spot. At least with dumbbells if you drop them while benching they aren't gonna land on your chest : (

if those bowlfex "select-the-weight" dumbells weren't 400.00 bucks I would be on that like a fat kid on a cupcake

Yeah, if you can get those multi-weight dumbells, you'll save yourself a lot of dough. Dumbell sets are really only for hardcore home-gym maniacs. Go with two screw bars and some plate weights. You'll save yourself a lot of money that route
