View Full Version : FOGO's Equipment Loss
NCAA rules
On a Face-off, FOGO A1 during the scrum for the ball loses his glove and
1. Stands back from the play, allowing B1 to scoop up the ball just as Coach A screams, "It should be a Re-Face!!!."
2. Continues to play for the ball. Referee kills the play and awards the ball to Team B on an IP page 76. Coach A screams, "That's not right!!Should be a re-Face!!!"
Your response?

if it was a re-face everytime someone lost a glove it would be horrible abused. everytime someone lost a clamp they could throw off their glove and get a second chance. if both teams did it, a game would nothing but face-offs

And refs would catch on verrrrrrrrrry quickly. Some of them are rather bright, despite the reputation for stupidity they have because of guys like LF25. :chuckle:

And the game would be better for it! :runaway:
The coach, by the way, has memorized:
Note 3: The ball shall be re-faced if the ball goes out of bounds in the center-field area and the officials cannot determine who was the last player to touch the ball, a player loses required equipment in the center-field area, an inadvertent whistle is blown while the ball is in the center-field area, an injury occurs in the center-field area, simultaneous fouls occur while the ball is loose, or the official calls timeout before possession is awarded.
What is your way out of this situation? (I know, but I'm giving others a chance.)

1) "Coach, you should compliment your player on his knowledge of 6.6.b.2 - Should a player lose his crosse or other equipment in any legal way... the player must either substitute off the field or stay out of the play until he can legally retrieve his equipment."
2) "Sorry coach - see 6.6.b.2!"

But what do you say when he quotes that note I posted above.

I tell him my rule supercedes his - since it's a higher number.
Here is my take on Rule 4-3 Note 3 where it says the ball shall be refaced if a player in the scrum/scrimmage area in the center of the field loses a piece of required equipment before possession is called....
AR 18 on the next page clears up most of it. Appears to be 3 situations.
1 FOGO loses equipment and continues to play for the ball: Play-on! Or award to other team.
2. FOGO loses equipment and then graciously gets out of the scrimmage area. No call.
3. FOGO man loses equipment while innocently and benignly in the play and he stays passive and it appears he could get hurt: Kill the play and re-face. This #3 is what I think the original statement in 4-3- Note 3 is talking about. I think this note, with a clarifying phrase, could be clearer....

There is a contradiction here in what the rules appear to say and what most of us would feel is 'right'. If the player loses equipment anywhere else and gets out of the way then no call. Here it is unlikely that he can get out of the scrimmage area and it is a special situation and therefore a special case and we re-face.
If I thought that the player deliberately shed required equipment to take advantage of this rule during a loose ball then I would award to the other team based on a 'delay of game'.
It makes me think of what we can/should go if the goalie deliberately loses equipment. We could be forced to stop play and we would/could be giving an unfair advantage to the defense.
I believe the new rules state that a goalie would get 2 min NR USC for that move.
