Hey guys..I have searched, and read the stickies!

Alright, so I began really getting into lacrosse a couple of weeks ago, using the lovely T-barriers here in Iraq. I've caught on quite fast, and after hitting the gym each morning after a 12 hour shift, I play wall ball, usually doing a routine that is like:

100 Left hand shots (my 'natural' side)
200 right hand (I suck at them, so I'm working on them a lot)
25 one handers, each side
25 behind the back
50 catch, change hands, shoot, etc
50-100 random shots, mix it up, etc..just to keep myself on my toes.

Each weekend, I work on catching/passing while running with a buddy. I have a small portable goal on it's way, after which we're going to begin practicing dodges, and shooting out of a dodge.

Question is, the stickies, and other posts, I hear people say "do 50 each side, no more than 30 minutes a day", etc..but when I hit 50, I feel like I've just warmed up, and can't get enough. Will this hurt my progress or make it better?

Side note: What is the "proper" way to catch, and switch hands? I can do them, but they feel very unsteady..like if I were to get checked, the ball would be dislodged super easy.

Thanks all..

Mike

I'd be careful shooting that much. I shooted around that much (probably a little bit more) everyday of the summer, and it really messed up my arm.

The proper way to catch is without cradling into the ball. You hold your stick out and let the ball come to you, and catch it back, or have soft hands.

to proper way to catch is to give with the ball, you should try and get your wallball rountine down to around 30 minutes the listed above is pretty good, this is because you want fast and accurate passes and build up a sort of rhythm

Uh, anyone who tells you that its bad to practice wallball for more than 30 minutes is completely insane. And if you have any muscle strength whatsoever, I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about hurting yourself.

I've always gone by the philosophy that the more wallball you play, the better.

Welcome to the forum, Mrock

You sound like you're spending plenty of time shooting, and running/passing is a great skill to hone. You could definately benefit from some wallball though if you can find a place/time. Instead of just shooting right/left/one-handed/switch hands, bounce and catch the ball off a wall, right/left/one-handed/catch and switch.

The proper way to catch is to give a little. You should become comfortable to where you actually begin to bring your stickhead back before the ball even enters it.

The proper way to catch and switch hands is to keep your bottom hand on the stick at all times. Keeping the buttend between your legs, make a motion as if you are sheathing a sword and slide your bottom hand up the shaft. Then, as you pull it around to the other side, take your top hand and grab the bottom of the shaft. Voila.

If you're switching hands right before a shot, it's the same mechanics, just swing the stick up and over your head, parallel to the ground and you'll be wound up when your finished, just release.

Thanks to all of you. I totally just realized I worded something wrong in my post. When I said "what is the 'proper' way to catch, and switch hands"..I meant just to catch THEN switch hands. Despite my retardedness, you all answered my question great. I can catch pretty well on both sides, it's just switching hands that screws me now and then. Especially when I practice dodges.

I appreciate the input all. Everyone on the forum has been outstanding. Can't wait for my gloves and goal to arrive so I can really get going.

if switching hands is your only problem just listen to what these guys have already told you but when your playing wallball try to switch hands as much as possible. ie. instead of working on behind the back and right and left handed, focus more on switching left to right more. like 50 lefty, 100 righty to cut down on time and then spend the rest of the time working on switching hands and shooting quickly after switching. hope that made sense, try to create a rythym(sp?) that helped me when i first started out.
