hey guys, im sure your all thinking wow, 16 pounds in 3 weeks, what the heck happened.
well i had surgery on my jaw to correct an underbite that the doctor said,
"would grow into a problem and cause issues later"
so he decides to widen my upper jaw by taking a bone saw and cutting my upper jaw away from my skull and moving it out over my bottom teeth. (a grand total of like 4 milimeters lol)
but nevertheless, i havent been allowed to chew for 6 weeks after the surgery, and im only half way through this period and i am now able to start eating a bit more regularly, but only foods i can swallow.
so this leads back to the original point, ive lost a grand total of 16 pounds, ive gone from a solid 150 before surgery to 134...
so i was wonderin if anyone had any ideas about gettin this back quickly and tryin to be able to do well this season.
im coming off my sophmore season starting varsity lsm and making the all-state team. so this is my year to shine and hopefully get some looks from college coaches.
im not allowed to lift weights for another 3-5 weeks, due to the fact you clinch your jaw when you lift which would rebreak the bone and i really dont wanna do that lol.
ive just been cleared yesterday to begin working back into jogging and running
so finally any ideas or suggestions to get back into shape and get my weight back would be greatly appricated.
thanks and sorry for such a long post

Holy Smack
They seriously have a surgery like this? Oh my god, how did they do that without totally rearranging your face or screwing up your palate? I'm sorry to sound like an inbred, but I am just baffled by that description.
Hopefully normal eating should get you back to your normal weight. You should be able to gain back 5-10lbs just from normal eating again.

haha yea its accually an extremely common surgery. the doc who did mine has been doin it for over 30 years and did a good job. he accually rearranged it all to give me a nicer smile and the swelling has gone down now and i honestly think i look better then i did before

haha thats much easier said then done. its quite combersome trying to eat when you cant chew and have a hard plastic mouthgaurd-like spilt wired to your upper jaw.

If my dentist told me he was going to do that I would get up tell him he is a retard and walk out. Probably because this one dentist I had drilled all the way into the gum into a tooth with no cavity, for no reason. I couldn't eat with that side of my mouth for 4 years, and I still can't with really hard stuff. You can tell too. My left set of teeth are roundedover, but my right are still fairly pointy.
As far as gaining weight, just go on a video game fest for like 3 days straight and drink a ton of soda and chocolate and pizza and beer if you're old enough. Just stuff your face. Also eat a ton of protein. Maybe find something that makes you stop pooping as well. Keep it all in. like an anti laxitive.

well i dont think mainlaxs way is good.
you wanna gain back good weight. and alls that will get you is fat and out of shape
theres not much of a way to gain back good weight fast. just kinda lift when you can and eat.
when you can eat again you will gain back weight becuase your body is probably starved right now. (not in a serious way just its underweight)

Actually I was just kidding. You could do that, but i don't condone it. Protein is good, and boost your carbo intake and calories. Like Maffe said, your body will replenish itself over time. Don't sweat it.

Wow, I would kill to be able to have 16 free pounds to gain. Ah man to think of all the food I could stuff my self with.
What have you been eating these last couple of weeks? I don't see how you could maintain a healthy diet without any food that requires chewing.

:wow: Can we get some food for this kid? PLEASE! Wow thats pretty crazy. I don't know about you but my clothes would not fit that good if i lost 16 pounds in just 3 weeks. Good luck on gaining that weight back.

just eat alot and start lifting again (but dont be shocked by ur drop in strength) i lost 5 pounds before from being sick and it took me a week to get back to where i was before (3-4 workouts) so for u it will take u a while
also look into some protein shakes and maybe meal replacement if you cant eat some meals during the day.

protein shakes and if you can at all, work core muscles...mainly pushups and bicycles. gaining that muscle so when you do get cleared to lift, your muscles are still ready to do it.

Hey Zeus Christian Dude (sorry, trying to curb my swearing). I just went out, partied, forgot about this, came back, read it again, and still can't imagine that whole procedure. How? Seriously? He would have had to either slice through your gums or make a huge cut right above your lip. Or come from the inside but that would be really hard and mess up your palate. I still cannot imagine how you seperate the upper jaw from the skull. Someone please enlighten me, it's going to keep me up all night

Lol my friends had it done. Isn't it common for people with under bites that are not able to be corrected with braces?

[edit] right now im able to eat alright, i can eat applesause as already stated lol but pretty much anything else i can just swallow like the filling for sloppy joes, chili, soup, and yes i drink protein shakes as much as i can stomach them...they get oooooold after about a week lol
hahahaha The Wister- they went in up under my upper lip and cut through the gum and did it through there.
and yea its ment to correct bad underbites, or if your jaw looks like it will turn into a bad underbite....
im still contiplating weither it would have really been a problem or if the stupid doc just wanted 9 grand to cut my face into little pieces

At first, I thought this was a spam thread because of the title...lol
But my suggestion while you still can't chew: blend your meals and drink them through a straw

heh i thought the same thing, i was waiting for one huge link to click on..
If you cant eat anything I would suggest trying Boost drinks.. I didnt have what you had happen to me but i lost a lot of weight at one point, yadda yadda yadda, once i was able to eat foods again the doctors wanted me to have Boost. They are expensive but o boy do they taste good. I also just ate like all carbs, pastas, bagels, english muffins, and some fish just so i could mix it up a little. That helped add some weight.

I've never had anything that extreme, but when i first got braces, i couldn't eat. So i just put everything in a blender. It was awesome, you can do a whole 3 course meal!
Starter - Soup and bread, blended into a paste
Main - Caserole with potatoes, meat, veg etc, blended into a paste
Pudding - Apple crumble, blended into a paste :P
I did it (minus the soup...) for a week or so, it was awesome! Makes food more interesting :P I say don't do anything to change from your diet before the surgery, just blend it. And to add the extra weight, protein shakes, energy bars and your usual "fitness" food.

Experiment! You'll never have an excuse to do this again, so go nuts :nut:
For me, it worked best with caseroles, curries, stews etc. Especialy if they have potato in them (bulks it out a bit). I also tried a roast dinner, using some gravy to make it more liquid...didn't work quite as well.
The only thing that didn't work at all was cereal. It was horrid. You know how bad soggy "end of the box" cereal mush is? Well, this is 10x worse, it's gloop :puke:
I'll see if i can remember any more combos i did. But then again, i could kinda chew a little bit, very weakly and it hurt a lot...so your stuff may have to be more liquid than mine.
Only other suggestion is porridge (/oatmeal? i don't know if you call it that in the states). I had that for breakfast, and my blended concoctions for lunch and supper :)

sounds like its still too soon to worry about gaining 16 pounds back if u still have trouble chewing. just get the nutritonal foods you need right now and then when you are fully recovered u can worry about gaining the weight back. just dont eat really unhealthy foods to gain the weight, there are healthy fats too.

Someone already said ensure, that's good advice. If they give it to old people to make em gain weight, it's bound to work, at least, to a degree.

haha yea thanks everyone, currently im in week 3-4 of recovery, another 1-2 weeks till i can offically chew, not sayin it wont be hard nd hurt for a while. but the bad part of it is, lacrosse hell week starts feb 5th, and thats about 2 and a half weeks from now, and right now i cant run because the shock of hitting with each step hurts really bad, i can only ride exercise bikes and use eliptical machines(sp?) but any tips on gettin ready to run for a few hours every day starting in about 3 weeks?

to get your lungs ready for running go into a pool and just swim or lay under water as long as you can to raise your lung capacity

careful with this one, it's how the kid drowned at St. Pauls in New Hampshire.
This probably wouldn't bulk up as much, but it seems to me like it would be a good chance to do high rep-low weight to build up stamina and tone. You'd rather be doing opposite for bulk probably (given your situation), but if you can't do anything else- work on your calves and biceps for beach season

Dude, mashed potatoes...starches will fill you up and can pack on bulk!
