There's a loose ball scrum and defenseman B9, new and green and disposed to bullish play, charges in to the fray intent on 'clearing the pile' as per his coaches general instructions. Carefully keeping his gloves pressed together, he dispatches A1 with a fierce running shove to the upper chest. Whirling to find more opponents to 'clear', he accidentally steps on the stick of A2 who had just scooped the ball behind B9, and simultaneously accidentally spears A3 in the kidneys with his butt end and also swats A4 under the chin with his stick head.

Ref whistles the play dead before more carnage can take place.

Assuming a one man mechanic (no fair consulting with your partner), what do you go tell the scorer's table?

I dont have any reffing experience, but I guess I would give possession to A because he stepped on the stick (assuming that A2 had just picked up the ball and did not completely have possession yet)(also despite the fact that team A would get the ball anyways), and call two slashes on B9?(but if the spear to the kidney wasnt so bad you could just not call that one, but a minimum of one slash, maximum of two?)

or am i just completely wrong

UR for delivering a check with a punching blow: 1:00

Immediate whistle for the loose-ball personal, so ignore the IP for stepping on the crosse since it's now a dead-ball foul (even though you were slow to blow the whistle, the LB personal still kills the play).

Slash for the contact with A3: 1:00 (could be USC but you said "accidentally")

Slash for the contact with A4: 1:00.

B9 sits for 3:00 releasable and has only two personals to go before disqualification. His actions are certainly not benign!

(You could, of course, choose to pass on any one of these fouls, but it sounds like B9 needs some education.)

OK. Just to LaxRef, not a part of the OP scenario:

While assessing the 'one goal penalty', the trainers determine that A1,3,and 4 are hurt pretty bad. A1 landed awkwardly, A3 probably will be peeing blood, and A4 will have a badly swollen, perhaps broken jaw.

Fans and A team Coach want an expulsion or at least an NR penalty.

Do you amend your call or what? Have a private conversation with B9's coach relaying your expectation that he remain on the bench for the remains of the game? Do you stand on your call and adopt a zero tolerance policy for B9 going forward?

I'm not trying to paint you into a semantic corner. I'm wondering how you respond when painted into a circumstantial corner on the field.....

It's definitely an "I'd have to see it" situation, but an expulsion for flagrant misconduct (for the collective bad act, not in addition to the individual fouls) definitely could be warranted. I normally try not to let the coaches talk me into things, but in this case maybe you huddle with your partner and announce that the player's actions meet with the conditions for flagrant misconduct.

Thanks, LR. I'm opposed to changing or 'augmenting' (escalating?) calls as well. I don't anticipate this scenario, but I would rather have a solution to the problem that has been 'vetted' than to have to wing it.

This type of incident does happen. I had a game where a defensemen chopped a middy down -- one blow to the head, one to the side, and one to the leg before the middie collapsed to the ground. Both flags and my hat were in the air, and I was going for my underwear next as I ran to protect the player because it seemed like he was going for a fourth. After calling three penalties, I was going to tell the coach if the player stepped on the field again he would soon have two more flags. The coach apologized for the player and said that he would sit out the game. He also asked for a report in writing be sent to the AD and principal so that he could remove the player from the team. I guess that it was an on going problem.
