View Full Version : Goalie Equipment Break Question
NCAA rules
Ball is loose
Goalie A1 is outside the crease attempting to scoop a loose ball in a scrum.
a) his stick breaks
b) some other required equipment breaks.
A1 continues to play for the ball. Official now notices the breakage and kills the play.
Coach A says, "We get the ball via AP, right?"
Coach B says, "We get the ball for A1's IP, playing without a crosse (or playing without required equipment), right?"
And you say....?

I think that you would give the ball to the team ,that the goalie was not on, up top outside the box, and give the goalies team one minute to replace the equiptment
 "I think so"

I thinkfor a) or b), award by A.P. 4.18.e applies;
During the course of play if a goalkeeper's stick becomes broken or any
other required equipment becomes broken or dislodged, the officials will
stop play as soon as they notice the problem, regardless of whether the
goalkeeper is in or out of the crease.
When play is stopped for this reason, the ball is awarded to the team
that was in possession when play was stopped or, if the ball was loose,
by alternate possession.
So I guess the goalie is given a free pass in this instance to play with broken equipment until we notice it, or he tells us it's broken.

There is this rule:
If the goalkeeper notices the broken equipment, he should verbally
notify the officials immediately during the play.
and then there is this:
A.R. 110. During a loose ball, any player involved in the scrimmage area loses a piece of required equipment and continues to play. RULING: A play on or an immediate whistle and a technical foul if the player who has lost the required equipment creates a dangerous situation for himself or another player.
Which application would you choose? A TF on the goalie for playing without required equipment since he is now out of the crease and he is considered a "regular" field player??
I think that I would go with A.R. 110 and then allow the goalie to fix his equipment or sub before the restart.

The rules specifically removed an A.R. that addressed the goalie as any other field player when outside the crease.
I think the key is that we should be killing the play when the goalie breaks equipment, so it's hard to give the goalie a TF when we should have stopped play. Furthermore, there is no caveat about the location of the goalie in 4-18-e, so I think we have to stop play even if he's outside the crease.
I am with LaxRef on this one. Last year there was confusing language about what to do with the keeper outside the crease who breaks his gear. Now it's clear on page 50 what we do...kill it as soon as possible and if it's loose, then go AP. Thus we DO treat the goalie differently than a field player in this case. It all circles back to the thought that we don't want someone playing goalie without proper gear NOR do we want his teammate to jump into the goal and try to stop the ball while his goalie has broken gear. It is also why there's now the strong language and penalty for a goalie who misleads an official about his gear.

I'm with LaxRef and eme on this one.
So now all we need is to get rid of language in NFHS book that allows goailie to face-off if his team has anyone serving penalty (4.4.B & 4.4.C)

But you need that for when the GK's team is playing down 6 men , as can happen in NFHS. :OMG:
Thanks for remining me of another favorite NFHS feature
