I'be been away a couple days, and had to really do some digging to locate this - the name isn't Zoomerang, but Zoombang, and I didn't remember that. Went to the US Lax Convention site - vendor hall map - and found the mfr - Impact Innovative Products.

Here is their website - http://zoombang.savvior.com/

The padding is made from a special polymer - it feels soft, like foam, but when struck - it instantly hardens. They show a guy whacking himself (with a hammer) with the ReSorb cushioning the impact. On the package it says "Don't hit yourself in the head with a hammer! Duh!" The product is actually designed as an underpad - but the description on the package was a little misleading - and with the vagaries of the rule descriptions of pads, I can see someone coming out with these as their shoulder pads.
As was discussed in the NFHS discussion - one AD said he would never even touch a player, most of us just tap the shoulder. The thinking was that the coach certifies that all of his players are equipped per rule, so the onus is on him to make sure they are safe, and he would also be incurring any legal liability.

(I wonder if you could make a ballstop out of this stuff?)

Or a cup.

I'm not kidding. A cup that's soft until walloped is particularly attractive to younger players who still find a hard plastic triangle stuffed down one's pants to be a nuisance.

I am not sure what others think but I would vote NO on the legality of the Zoombang as a stand along shoulder pad, maybe an under pad, but not as a substitute for the "traditional" shoulder pads. The zoombang may absorb shock or ball impact but does it protect the skeletal structure in the same ways that shoulder pads do?
