This season will be my little brother's first season playing on a team. He is going to play D, surprisingly he was pretty good when he first picked up a D-stick middle of last season while watching one of my games.
He had his first day of try-outs on Saturday but was disappointed becasue he didnt do as good as he thought he would.
The problem is, is that he didnt want to put in the effort of going outside and practicing footwork, positioning, or his left hand before the season, and he still doesnt want to.
I know he wants to play becasue he talks about it ALL the time but he just seem to be motivated yet.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to get him motivated?
Thanks

I ask him everyday if he wants to but he always says "Nah, I'd rather just do_______"

try to make him want to beat you. get him a little pissed off. like when he says, "nah i'd rather ________" just say, "yeah, you couldn't beat me anyway, you do kinda suck."
then maybe that'll motivate him a little bit.
hopefully that isn't to mean.

don't be too tough on him, let him beat you. I made the mistake of playing Varsity level lacrosse on my little brother and being too tough on him, now he never wants to play with me, and he was good for a while too.

Never thought of that, thanks

I was going to say, beat him up some...
Show him why he should try to improve.

make him watch some highlights on e-lacrosse that always gets me motivated
I sorta had the same problem with my little brother. He loves to play, but for some reason he hates to go outside and actually work on it. What I do now is just go to his games, tell him what he did wrong, and then he will sometimes go outside with me and let me correct his mistakes.

i think that his motivation will come throughout the season. becuase hell realize that "oh ok i need to practice a little".
i guess you could make up some cool game or something that has to do with lacrosse but doesnt seem like practice. he prolly likes the games just not practice.

Just play catch, if he's young enough, super stick skills dont really matter a ton.

maybe hes just not ready to commit to this. hes still young. sure it would be cool to teach your little brother all you know and make him an awesome player and whatnot but if hes not interested then whats the point?

Do your friends scrimmage on weekends or in free time? Maybe have him play with you guys then he might want to improve so he can play with the older kids.

Tell him lacrosse was made by Indians. By fitting the word Indian into your sentence it will motivate him somehow if he likes Indians. If he doesnt like Indians...well...sucks for him.

One thing that I used to do was try to be better than people. If just the prospect of getting better isn't working, maybe the idea that he could be better than some other kid on his team.

i agree with makimaki, except i watch best of lacrosse 06, pick that up or if you already have some game film ask if he wants to watch some lacrosse with you and point out what the D guys are doing in the game, then after you watch for awhile be like 'hey wanna go try some of this stuff outside for a few minutes?' even if he doesn't he will at least learned some stuff just from watching the game

Hell, show him Kryptic's highlight reel. That ALWAYS gets me pumped. In fact, I watch it before every single practice now, to remind me of where hard work can get me. Show him the BTB shots, the through-the-leg passes, that sort of stuff. Keep his interest high, and tell him with practice, he can be the guy throwing the BTB pass in the championship game.

The only problem with that is when they see right through it. The way you said it was subtle enough to motivate me, but to another person, it might not do the trick. But anger definately works best in my book."

Definitely! I know I always wanted to go scrimmage against high school kids since I was like 11 or 12. I wanted to prove I could play with the big boys, and by doing so that I wa sthe best in the league.

I agree, Kyle's highlight reel is what really hooked me on Lacrosse...
Anger also motivates me, I know you said it hasn't worked, but maybe you're going too hard? Don't tell him he sucks, just tell him that you're much better than him and he'll never be able to take you on nor play with the kids in High-schools... I also remember my first season, I wasn't into Lacrosse (Naturally born into Hockey, but no Hockey teams down here.)... But after my first game, I was stoked and wanted to get better.
