A slash in a uncontrolled check, or a semi controlled one to the head, I think your half right here, if you are winding up and unleashing on his hands it will get called as a slash but a lesser check to somewhere else may also get called as a slash, It would be best to ask Laxref or some other superior knowledge on the forums

Slashing is a penalty. You can check the glove as long as it is on the stick and as long as you are not beating the hand. (NFHS, 5.6 Situation C, p. 56)
Pushing is shoving an opponent from the rear. If the push is violent it can be called an illegal check.

so if im just kinda hacking at the hands/stick its ok? (by hacking i mean slight wacks not an all out swing)
and i can push as long as im not trying to completely mess someone up?

Messing someone up has nothing to do with it its where you hit them, no head high upper body checks, or push from behinds

If you push and your fist is already in a punching mode when you make contact, that's unnecessary roughness.
You can check the stick, and the gloves are considered part of the stick. However, if your check is deemed 'out of control' by the official, you can get nothing but stick and still sit for a slash. What is called as a slash in a developmental JV game is not the same as in an MLL game. What I call is bound to differ from what any other official on this board calls.
It's subjective. Live with it.
If your checks are controlled, honestly aimed at the stick or glove, and intended (and clearly so) to dislodge the ball or unbalance the attacker, not crack aluminum, you should be OK.

pushing is a vital part of defence but it all depends on the mannor that you do it in. if you are all over the kid not lettting him move anywhere you will be called for a push/interferance. but if you are just pushing him off of you when he has the ball then you are ok in my books.

You can push a player who has the ball or is 5 yards from a loose ball if you make contact from the front or the side, above the waist, and below the neck. If the contact is to the back, you can only stop their progress, you cannot drive them backwards. In any case, you cannot punch with your glove to push, or use your stick to push their body, or push with only one hand on the stick. Usually a push is done with the forearm or with the glove while holding the stick.

But maybe not in the rulebook.

ok so its ok to push people as long as 2 hands are on the stick and the push is chest high? but can i shove forward with my stick or would that be called cross checking?
i get the slashing thing now... i can do a controlled slash at the hands/stick as long as im going trying to get the ball out, not just to try and hurt the kid.

If you shove the other player even with both closed hands together on the stick, that's a push. If you check the other player with the stick (hands are not together), that's a cross-check.

Yes, just no punching motion. And w/i 5 yards of a loose ball or to the person with the ball. And above the waist and below the neck. etc.

Additionally, our association's interpretation that a once legal contact is made, is must be equal and opposite pressure. So, if a player makes legal contact but then thrusts or shoves away the opposing player, this becomes a push. This is not to say that this is called consistently by every official.

To be clear, equal and opposite pressure is only for contact to the back. You can legally shove a player from the front or side w/o a push being called.
