Just checked my grades on website and saw a banner that said, SCHOOL CLOSED, EXTREME COLD. All the schools in area are closed. Not just mine Now it really isnt that cold here. They are calling for a high of about 0 F windchills -25. So my question to you guys is have you ever had one? and could someone enlighten me as to why they would do this.

We have no school tommorow anyway but i doubt that we would get a cold day. Two years ago, almost every school in connecticut had the day off because of a cold day (it was like -20 with the windchill) and we still had school. It sucked because at my school you have to walk from building to building outside and after every class you go outside.

we had one a couple years ago. but they only gave us a day off because the heater broke.

It's for people that have to wait for buses.

All of the schools are closed around me, too. I'm guessing it's because of the 'extreme' cold. It's -17° according to weather.com right now. I personally don't think we should have had school closed, but I'm not complaining. There's hardly any snow, too. They didn't give us a reason on the website, but I'm guessing it's just because of the cold.

Lake effect cold, I was under impression the lake ( lake michigan) was only reason it isnt -20 here. Wind blows over lake, 34 degree water warms air. Air is slightly less cold.

I found out earlier today that we don't have school tomorrow due to the cold. Like what Riot said, it's for the people that have to wait for the buses. If it's a certain temperature below zero, school systems will close schools because people can die in weather like that. We have a high of 9 tomorrow with high winds.

Today is our first snow day this year because of "extreme cold". I'm not complaining, because I got home kinda late last night and I could sleep today, but I would much rather have it be crazy lake effect snow like what happened on Christmas a couple years ago for those in NY.

Crazy lake effect is the best. I love it! Us michiganders dont get it like those folks in buffalo and other spots close to erie/ontario. Most we have gotten in about 32 in 28 hours.
Up at my cabin we got, 72 inches in 6 days but it compacted fast so it was only about 4 feet high.. The railingswere under alot of snow. Lake effect is a beautiful thing

Two weeks ago kids were complaining we weren't getting snow and global warming was taking over the world... Now according to weather.com it is currently 15 degrees and the added wind chill makes it feel like -1 degrees.

I don't have the correct meteorlogical knowledge, but global warming is why there may be enhanced coldness occurences...
Global warming causes both extreme heat and cold conditions when climatic changes occur in the proper sequences. :hot: :OMG:

We have a cold day in ohio.
osulax
02-05-2007, 11:13 AM
i have one today too. it's my first one in high school and i'm a senior and it's not like it's uncommon for us to get bad whether because i live in ohio. our school district's really dumb and last year they should of called a snowday at least twice but didn't and some kids got in to wrecks but nothing serious happened which is good for the district because you better believe there would of been law suits all over that.
also another reason for closing school because of cold is because sometimes the buses won't start because of it.

Windchill around -10... it's really not all that bad if you wear a few layers.
wow. I'm in Texas, where anything under 40 is considered cold. And yeah, the global warming influences oceanic tides, causing massive changes in the flow of moisture and leading to extreme periods of dry, cold weather in N.A.

I read in a website that my high school hometown, Houghton, Michigan, back in the winter of '77-'78 had about 380 inches of snow (normal is about 180")...the whole town just shut down for about 3 months...can you imagine, that would be totally...weird...
oh, geez...Post Number 666...
oh, yeah...locally in El Paso, it was 61 degrees today...

sure it does. just cause it's 60 in texas dosn't mean it's a direct reflection of global warming. it's texas, it's not supposed to snow or be below 40.

What happened was that it steamed very fast and then froze instantly. Making very fine snow. Thats why hot water works better.
