Although I definitely loved Band of Brothers, it was a mini-series and was able to accomplish a great deal more than your average war movie. In terms of straight movies about war, I am a huge fan of Patton. I like many other films from Navy SEALs to The Dirty Dozen though.

I'm going to go with Tae Guk Gi (aka The Brotherhood War). One of my favorites if not my favorite (JSA a close second for the Korean War, albeit a modern look at the DMZ and North/South relations).
Other favorite war movies are Apocalypse Now, Tora Tora Tora, The Private Navy of Sgt O'Farrell, Empire of the Sun, Band of Brothers, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket etc.
Edit: I left out M*A*S*H. I love the series more than the moive, but the movie is still a great classic.

If you liked The Dirty Dozens (another great movie) you need to check out Silmudo. It's essentially the Korean equivalent but it dealt with the true story of training the "best of the worst" for a covert invasion of North Korea. It rocks.

apocalypse now, full metal jacket, and platoon are great war movies, not only because of the action and stuff, but also because they raise serious ethical questions. other than vietnam though, band of brothers is awesome, as is blackhawk down. an oldie you might want to check out is A Bridge Too Far; an absolute classic with a massive ensemble cast.

Well just remember that 300 isn't exactly going to be Gladiatoresque, it's based off of the small comic series "300" by Frank Miller. Based on the trailer and adaptations from some of Miller's previous works, expect mostly dark scenes and characters similar to "Sin City". I remember the Spartans from the comic "300" in particular to be quite accurate of their dipiction in history, and it should be great to finally get a movie based on Thermopylae (the movie is directly based on the comic, almost scene for scene). The Battle of Thermopylae itself is amazing, and if you're really interested in it then I would suggest reading the book "Gates of Fire".
On to the thread topic, some of my favorites are: Enemy at the Gates, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Empire of the Sun. Oh and just wondering, but has anyone else seen Letters From Iwo Jima yet?? I thought it was something special.
BuckWyld

300 is not an accurate depiction of Thermopylae. The movie should be like Sin City in so far as it will be very close to the comic.

Correct. It is more or less told as a bookeneded narration, described by someone who never saw the events lending to some of the fantastic/over the top visuals, much in the same respect that epic poems were handed down.
As for accuracy to the comic, the fact that Frank Miller is producing means he'll be closely watching/signing off on anything different, as it was the only way he'd let Sin City get made.

Patton was great, and I agree with you on B of B.
Navy SEALs is good, Saving Private Ryan is probably the best WWII movie out there. The Patriot is good as well.
But tehre is one movie everyone is forgetting. Gladiator, perhaps the best of all. It's not just a boom, blood, death movie, but it has a sad, human side. That's what makes it great.

Gladiator isnt a war movie though. Other then the opening scene, there isnt war in it. There are fights, but not war. not even real battles. just fights.

Accurate in the sense that the Spartan characters in "300" embodied the spirit and midset of the actual Spartan soldiers. I was not speaking of the battle in general, the comic is of course glorified and exaggerated...

Pearl harbor is NOT a war movie. It's a love story. Enemy at the gates is a TERRIBLE war movie. The patriot is so far from accurate it's comical at times. Troy is a horrible depiction of one of the coolest stories in history.
As for straight up war movies, most people have hit the big ones (apoc. now, platoon, blackhawk down, saving pvt ryan, etc). I think if it's just war movies in general, we're forgetting one of the greatest series of them all...Star Wars (not the cheesy prequels, but the originals). Epic war story, cool effects, etc. Not a traditional "war movie" in what we would consider, but I'd put it up there along with the others that people are mentioning.

I guess that is a good question. How do we want to limit the category of "War Movie"?
Does "War Movie" mean only current and historical operations?
If not, than things like "Starship Troopers" and the "Star Wars" series should qualify despite being "futuristic" and certainly fit the "Sci Fi" category...
Starship troopers (at least the book anyway) has gotten considerable acclaim for its realistic representation of military life and combat...

Tora Tora Tora was phenomenal, as were Platoon and Full Metal Jacket, but I am personally of the opinion that Apocalypse Now wasn't as good as the documentary about it, Hearts of Darkness.
I would also Deer Hunter, The Big Red One, Schindler's List and The Pianist.

I agree and disagree. As I stated, Pearl Harbor had some good war scenes, but other than that, was a love story.
Good war scenes, yes, good war movie? No. By that rationale, would you say varsity blues is a stripper movie, rather than a football movie? It featured some great scenes in a strip club.
Enemy at the Gates was awesome. I am dissapointed to see you did not like it. Why is it "TERRIBLE"?
For one, it wasn't accurate. Two it twisted historical events. Three, it was long, boring, and predictable.
The Patriot wasn't suppose to be accurate, but then again, how do we know what is "accurate" from something so long ago...
We know what accurate is from something two+ centuries ago because it was highly documented and has been extensively studied since it's occurance. I'm not even sure why I'm defending this point as it's ridiculous to question the accuracy of well known american history.
Here is where I COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY disagree with you. You talk about The Patriot being unrealistic, and Troy being a bad depiction, and THEN throw a sci fi movie in Star Wars as a great WAR movie? You are dilusional. Great movies as they may be, the are far from anything you would concider a war movie. They are sci-fi movies. Science Fiction.
That's why I prefaced my comment regarding star wars with "if it's just war movies in general". Star wars does fall into sci-fi, but they're also war movies. I "threw" a sci-fi movie in in a totally seperate manner and paid homage to "traditional" war movies (in the sense that most people think of them).
The Lord of the Rings series is a classic fantasy movie...does that detract from the fact that it's a virtual war almost 100% of the time during the flick(s)? You yourself tried to squeeze in Pearl Harbor as it has good battle scenes...does LotR or Star Wars not also have great battle scenes?

I am personally of the opinion that Apocalypse Now wasn't as good as the documentary about it, Hearts of Darkness.
I think you are confused Apocalypse Now was based on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, which was written ~1900 and was about a European traveling along the Congo river. The Heart of Darkness was in turn based on Dante's inferno, the common thread through all the stories is that as each character travels deeper things become darker and more insane.

Yes, I know of the Conrad book, but "Hearts of Darkness" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0102015/) was a documentary made in 1991 about the making of Apocalypse Now. Having watched both, I liked the documentary better than the movie itself.

Band of Brothers can't really be considered in this light guys. Far too long ot be compared to a movie. It is the best of anything here, but it is like comparing apples to oranges.

Idi a Smotri - "Come and See". Blows all those other movies out of the water. It is a fact that Steven Spielberg watched it a number of times before filming both Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. They only used live ammo for filming and you can tell. Leave it up to the Ruskies to make a great war with live ammo.
Another great one is Talvisota -"Winter War". Another amazing war movie.

I enjoyed Tora Tora Tora but the bombing scene at the end was so long i literally fell asleep. It was like, I get it already Pearl harbor got bombed, you can end it.
But i do love Full Metal Jacket, especially the way it is hysterical in the beginning and then at one specific point in the movie the entire thing shifts to complete seriousness. Great movie.
