ok so alot of the guys on my team stay after school to workout in the weightroom. they dont spend any time on stick skills or anything like that, and they get mad at me because i dont work out, i play wall ball with my left hand, i work on shot accuracy, and play games like ultimate lacrosse ( similar to ultimate frisbee if youve ever played it in gym class) to help get my skills up.
should i be working out with them? i dont really see the point. just because im getting stronger doesnt mean ill be a better player. im more of a small fast guy.
BTW im 5 ft 9 about 145- 150 lbs

You should be doing both.
Screw Social Lives.
Wall Ball, and Workout--A lacrosse players life.
And Parties, late late when you cannot physically play.

The best longpole defender on my team is a tall, skinny guy who hasn't seen a weight room in his whole life. We call him the surgeon general though, because he has amazing stick skills, will strip the ball at will and will beat guys double his size with amazing positioning. In lacrosse, I think stick skills are far more important, but a good weight training program will help you dominate the more physical aspects of the game.

whatever you dont have in stregnth you will have to make up for with your stick...why not work on both?

Join them in the gym, then play wall ball and do your usual thing after. Best of both worlds.

stick skills mean more, yes, but lifting and size do help.

do interval stuff. Like wall ball Tu Thurs, and weights MWF. Its what I'd do if i didnt have my weight lifting as a class. On days you lift, play some wallball after. Weights will further enhance your stick skills.
I feel bad for the guys on my team, becuase many of them do not lift and could be so much better if they did. I have learned that lifting has made conditioning easier on off days, and harder on days you lift.
IMO, there is nothing worse than lifting, and then running later. I HATE IT! But if you did both, you will be in great shape.

In highschool, size and speed have a huge impact, but as long as your not overweight, huffin and puffin down the field, you should be fine. Once you get to post high school play, size equals out and it's too late to learn stick skills

I agree with Jtothep213 during the winter my lacrosse coach gets us the weight room in our school (M W F) and we do what we need to then we go to the cafateria and run shuttles. Afterwords most of us go out side and play around a little and hit the wall. I would have to say that it is probably one of the best workout schedual there is and it has helped me a lot

I'm not trying to put you down or anything, but it doesn't sound like you've had too much experience lifting and therefore cannot rightly claim that that is the best work out schedule out there. I personally don't even feel that what you have outlined here can qualify as a 'schedule' since no specifics are given.

it should be a balance of both, what good is someone who is only big? you must have the best of both worlds. lift, then practice the stick skills. eat right, stay hydrated, and you will be a lacrosse machine.

workin out just as important as stick skills....you are only gonna get a fsater shot..faster dodges... and quicker than opposed to just polishing off your skills.... if ur small.. youll still get knocked around on groubd balls and stuff and also the lifting could be a team thing too. i know for my team we lift mon tues thurs fri and run on two of those days. and weds we play. its a tough scedule but you have to balance it out.

This man speaks the truth.
but dont forget to run, speed is more important than strength if your a small guy, (im guessing attack or mid) and without it, its harder to get open for shots

Believe me, I'm an advocate of hard work and diligent behavior, but I think you're going overboard here.
The fact is that lacrosse shouldn't replace all facets of your life. I know coaches would like it to be that way, but it's unrealistic. What is realistic, however, is that the vast majority of us won't be playing lacrosse past high school. What we will keep past high school, however, are the close circle of friends that will probably be with you for the rest of your life.
Yes, both aspects, wallball and working out, are important, and both must be done on a regular basis to show improvement. You shouldn't, however, alienate your friends. It's such an awful cliche for coaches and peers to tell people to abandon their social lives to get better. The majority of the top players in the game live as robust of a social life as they do a training regimen.

actually, friends from high school tend to fade real quick once everyone heads off to college. I know the friends I am closer with the people i graduated college with than i did high school. Also I missed out on some important collegiate social activities that I would have loved to partake in because of lax....i don't regret any of it, I'm just saying you may be misinformed

That's true, but you don't have a small circle of 4-5 friends that you still keep in touch with after high school?

work out every other day or so. Maybe 3 to 4 days a week would do the job just lift hard and only do a few muscle groups a day and you will make gains. After an hour at the gym go and hit the wall for 15-30 minutes and then go home. That is a good day :)

working out helps alot on ground balls. leg strength especially, because that helps you to box out the other player and oick up the ball yourself. it also helps body checking.

truth right there...but really your small kinda skinny so dont work out everyday...work out on mon, weds, and fri, and do stick skills the other days. weekends with the girl, got the right idea there. the "cool" kids who spend their lives in the weight room wont seem so impending when you take thier spot on varsity.

It's such an awful cliche for coaches and peers to tell people to abandon their social lives to get better. The majority of the top players in the game live as robust of a social life as they do a training regimen. And Yet, it's still possible to do all three. I keep a social life as well as hard work and wall ball, When i say screw social life, I don't mean completly screw social lives, I mean Personally, I'd rather work out or play wall ball with a couple of good lax buddies than go to the school basketball game.. And then I'd hang out with them after the bball game and after I'm doing playing wallball.
And majority of friends lose touch, I know my dad talks to Maybe One or two people from high school, one he still talks to occasionally because they ended up in the same college and working for the same company orginally [he works for a different company now], however my Mom talks to maybe one person, once a year.
I think its college friends that you'll keep for a long time, Not high school.

you play wall ball to be a better lacrosse player
you work out to be a better athelete
you need both, so do both
