hey guys i was wondering other exercises that will help me out with dips, since when i do dips it really hurts my sternum. i know the basic tricep exercises and have been doing those but is there any way to not do dips and still be able to do them well if i have to. i have tryouts around march 20th and we have to do dips, pullups and bench, so i wanna be better at them... right now i can do about 8

It probably hurts because your chest is weak. Just don't go down all the way. The only way for it to stop hurting is for you to do more of them.

Along with the previously mentioned, you can also do tricep pushups and pressdowns if you have a machine for that.

Your sternum hurts b/c your muscles are weak (no offense) and you put all of the stress on your chest which isnt good. you should feel a hurt in your sternum after you do dips tho (means you\'ve done them until you cant do them anymore) 8 is OK but try to get around 30 then your will be in good shape. in my gym class we were graded on improovement of dips and almost everyone could do 10-25 (even the weaker ones).

Yeah, I knew you meant sternum when you said your chest hurts. Like laxer said, it's normal and you just need to keep doing them till you get stronger.
