View Full Version : Goalie Quiz
We often hear the phrase: "Outside the Crease the Goalie is treated just like a Field Player."
Can you name the various ways a goalie does differ from a field player OUTSIDE the crease or is treated differently, by rule, or the game is altered slightly just because he's a goalie. REMEMBER, THIS ALL WHILE HE IS OUTSIDE THE CREASE.

Well, one way the Goalie is different is that on any whistle/restart he gets up to 5 seconds to get back to the crease.

And—under NCAA rules at least, you can work on the NFHS angle for us—we stop play if the goalie breaks his crosse or loses or breaks any other required equipment.
He can't face off unless his team is man-down.
He can't be in the wing area on a face-off unless his team is man-down.
He is allowed (required, actually) to have a stick with different measurements.
He does not have to have arm pads or shoulder pads and must have a chest protector and a throat protector.
Under NFHS rules, if he gets a penalty while out of the crease there's a 1:00 warmup allowed for his replacement (same if he's in the crease).
I'm probably missing a few more.
Keep going...
He's allowed to have a deep pocket on his crosse....

However, he may have lost his virtual immunity from a stick check. Happens rarely but what would we do if the goalie scored? It would seem very odd asking a goalie for his stick.

but it is still the goalkeepers crosse, so it is treated as such in a measurement.

I believe you have to have a goalkeeper on the field.
The designated goalkeeper is the last player required to serve a penalty as the in-home if there is a penalty to a person not on the field (OK we're reaching here, not much left that I can see).
The goalkeeper is expressly permitted to wear shinpads and football pants with or w/o pads. But I don't see any rule stating that other players can't wear these also, so I am not sure if this is really a difference.

I thought of another one: under NCAA rules, the goalkeeper's gloves need not match his teammates' gloves.
I think you guys have them all except two:
1. keeper's stick must be used by the designated goalie, i.e. he can't switch sticks with a teammate during play
2. In NCAA goalie is not forced to adhere to strict 20-sec. sub time on injury/penalty "Be reasonably lenient" is the phrase. Of course, in FED, this subbing can even include a 1-min warm-up if requested.
I think we have them all
