1. In-home is defined as starting attack man and must be first player listed in scorebook. That said I see nothing that actually requires the coach to respond to the question. He must certify the players equipment but I see nothing about the in-home question. The coach is responsible for the scorebook.
2. In several situations where offending player cannot serve, e.g., expulsion, where offending player cannot be determined or where coach or bench is the offending.

The in home is the first attackman listed in the guestbook. We get the in home's number at the same time we get the captains and certify the coach. If the coach is ambiguous about who the in home is, we go to the scorer and ask to see the scorebook. Scorers are often attractive, so this is not the tedium you think it might be.
We need an in home because he is the poor schmuck who sits when we don't know who to sit or when the offender is a coach.

What's a nominated defender? I see that you're in the UK, but I don't believe that's a provision in normal ILF rules. Is it possible that your league uses a special exception?

Give Sour a moment to complete his morning tea, then I'm sure he'll awaken enough to agree with me.

Trick twist to the question:
You are officiating at Bentley College and the home coach has forgotten the number of his in-home. Bentley does not have a rule book, having switched all record keeping to a computer program. How do you determine the in-home?

Nominated defenders are in some league and national rules. In Germany and Norway, we've used them if a team doesn't have a backup goalie. For serious fouls, though, the goalie still has to sit.

You say: "Hmmm. If everything is in the computer, how do you know who your top scoring attackman is?"
Coach will demonstrate his knowledge of his team's 'Important' data (unlike that pesky stuff we officials need to know) by saying: "Oh, that's Laser Netshooter. Averaging 3.14159 goals per game, and an even 2 assists"
"What number is he?"
Now you have an inhome.
You just have to watch a lot of Perry Mason reruns to get as clever as I.

Who care's if he's got a rule book, he hasn'r read the darn thing anyway.
I guess the in-home would be the person you assign to serve the bench penalty for not providing a scorebook!

Correct! Alghough a couple of days seemed to work better!

Bobsch has it bang on....in the UK esp in the North leagues teams tend to run 13 man squads...the nominated defender is used to get around the lack of reserve goalie for most time serving pentalies. HOWEVER the ref can insist that the goalie serve the penalty if the infringement was particularly violent/dangerous
